I do cartwheel mounts and fun hard things at the start, then later at the end when I've done other holds and things I want to just do 1 or 2 more coz I want to see "I still have it" and I can't get up sometimes cos im so tired, and then I think I've lost it LOL. I'm a loser haha!! I should stop trying to redo them at the end me thinks

Ok let me know how you go! 🙂

This is my awful attempt at an Allegra, and as close as I got. Most times I can't even get that far cos of the pain it causes on my ribs/mid back! And releasing the top leg seems impossible!
-
To keep my balance I focus on pulling in HARD with the top arm, thats my anchor. Have you tried a jackknife? Both legs leaning over the body together. I find that even easier than Ayesha sometimes! Maybe that will help you get a feel for the weight on that side of the body, and then handspring into Ayesha issue of that leg hitting the pole might sort itself out. Or you could jackknife, then bring the top leg back over slowly so you end up in Ayesha

Hmm lets see if I can explain it, if I cartwheel up, that motion of getting up (head down, legs up) puts me in a perfect position to balance my split grip for ages. but if I handspring up (head up and back, legs up) it seems to bring me around the other side of the pole more and I loose balance a lot quicker/my upper arm has a harder time pulling me in towards the pole. Maybe I'm just odd! I feel more comfy going into a straight edge though as opposted to Ayesha, I have a harder time balancing with legs spread in a V

This thread is just what I needed! I have been trying to get my side splits for about half a year now and stuck about 3-4 inches from the floor on one side, and awful on the other.. 7 or so inches! I stretch about 3 times a week for about 45 minutes, a combo of my own stretches that I enjoy and then one of veenas splits videos. I feel disheartened that I can't get down yet, but I am 28 and NEVER did any stretching or exercise before this year, and as a kid did no sports. So I guess its a big change for my body. I used to be SO far from touching my toes when reaching down it was ridiculous, now I can touch toes and it feels comfortable. In a sitting pike I can hold my feet and my head can touch my knees on a good day. Splits is still to come, I'm just seeing it as another "stretch" and not THE SPLITS!!! and will just keep trying to improve that stretch like I have others

I think we definetly learn tricks faster in the beginning cos they are easier and more attainable? I learnt sooo many tricks in my first 6 months and then BAM I was just practising the same tricks and failing at getting new ones. I was pretty happy cos I can do a Handspring and Carthweel Mount and a Jackknife which are the last few videos in Veenas advanced section, but I was still craving new tricks. I finally got a few new ones in the last month (so like 6 mths of no new tricks, lol) I got lunchbox, pencil (off pole, cant get into it from the floor), hood ornament and swan holds. I DREAM of one day getting Jade, Allegra and Knee hold. 3 more tricks, 3 tricks that seem IMPOSSIBLE!
-
I also find Allegra extremely painful, and Can't even release the top leg 🙁

Hello! I find Cartwheel into Ayesha much easier than Handspring into Ayesha, I find that I can't hold it as long or as balanced if I enter via a Handspring, it puts me off balance sorta?? I haven't had the issue of the leg falling back into the pole, I just focus on stepping far under myself, flicking up and opening my legs… I can show you a video of me doing it if you want?
-
Whoops, thanks Empy! So maybe just vinger mixed with water? or straight white vinegar in a spray bottle? *hides glass cleaner*
-
Thanks chem! My pole arrived and still currently is extremely tarnished then cos its a dark bronze color LOL
-
Does anyone know if brass should become a much lighter color after using a brass cleaner on it?? I tested "Brasso" on the very top of my brass xpole (where I never grip) and it made it go from the normal deep goldy bronzed color to a light gold color! It made me assume I was taking the brass coating off?
-
Are Xpoles brass seriously not all brass? I thought they were, thats why I got one!!! I tested out cleaning it last night with "Brasso" a brass cleaner, and I used it right up the top of the pole where I never grip. Well it ended up taking the deep brass bronzey color off and underneath is a light silvery/goldy color with NO GRIP at all! So they must be coated! you can't even use brass cleaner on them!!!
Xpole do have bad customer service I have heard from 2 other friends who had to communicate with them 🙁
-
I can do other advanced moves like TG handsprings, carthweel and handspring mounts, ayshas and floor handstand holds but still cant get the pencil mount!!! Grr lol
-
Yes the jade is one of my can't do moves!!!! I just CANT stay on the pole in that position I slide right down 🙁

I'm in Melbourne also and yes also hurt my back recently too! i pulled a muscle up the top near my shoulder blade, and it caused minor nerve damage down my arm. 6 weeks later the nerve stuff is gone and i feel great except sometimes i feel a bit tight in the upper back area after poling. I think there isnt much to do to speed recovery except lots of rest, and in my case I got given some exercises to get me used to engaging muscles lower down in my back so my upper ones dont take all the load when im upside down. did the physio give u some similar exercises? trying to pole when injured though will just make it take longer to heal, trust me, i tried to pole during my 6 week recovery and my body wouldnt let me, arm would buckle under me etc..
-
I've been off the pole (mostly) for a month now cos I pulled a muscle in my upper back and it caused minor nerve damage down my left arm 🙁 It meant i couldn't hold myself up in advanced split grip holds etc cos my arm was actually weaker from the nerve damage! My advice would be stay off the pole as long as they tell you to so you heal, I really struggled with it for the first few weeks and kept trying to pole and it only made my problem worse. Now that I've not had a pole session except for testing out my arm strength every few days my nerve damage seems gone and no more pain 🙂 So rest is the key!
-
I find leg grips a bit trickier on my brass pole too but I have gotten used to it! The biggest issue I had when I got it was yes I had GREAT hand grip in terms of slipping DOWN the pole, but I would suddenly drift sideways AROUND the pole with my hands, putting me off balance in split grip ayshas, elbow grips etc!! It actually worried me a lot but I actually forgot I had that issue now – I think I've accustomed myself to holding myself a bit different 🙂 In terms of grip I barely wipe my brass down and haven't even cleaned it to get tarnish of cos it hasen't tarnished. I wipe it with glass cleaner. I loooove my brass so much 🙂

MemberJuly 16, 2011 at 7:29 am in reply to: Minor nerve damage in arm – goodbye strength moves ? 🙁Thanks for the comments guys!! I haven't felt any nerve tingling for a few days now and tested out if I could hold myself in a split grip just once and I could! The lower arm felt a little weaker than normal or maybe I just don't trust it, but I feel happy now that I know I haven't really lost much strength in 3 or 4 weeks 🙂

What do you do with the foam roller before you do the splits nikki? I use mine and kinda roll over it for 20 seconds with firstly the underside of my upper thighs, then I lie on my side with leg bent and roll the hamstring as much I can on either side, then I dont kno what else to do lol
-
Yeah it took ages to go away! but it was never bad enough for me to do anything about, and only hurt if I had the leg in front in a split, so I just avoided doing that and never felt it otherwise! Oh except for one day after trying to make it the front split leg and I could feel a tight pulling of the hamstring the next day at work, but when I made it my back leg I never felt it again except if I tried to make it the front leg if that makes sense. Now if I try it's gone (the pain is gone) but the flexibility is less so I just let it be the back leg now, lol. Moral of the story for me was warm up b4 stretching!!!! And yes I got a foam roller and love it
-
I did the exact same thing trying to get my front splits (still trying!) and had a sore hamstring right up near my butt for months, I'd say 3 months, but now its totally pain free. It was my right leg and it was fine stretching it with that as my behind leg, so it taught me to go lower in the splits with my left leg forward (which is now my preferred way). The hamstring never hurt if that leg was the behind leg but I couldn't have it out front

I got forearm grip first but now feel safer in an elbow grip – not sure if that's weird!! I like that in an elbow grip I can hold my body out further from the pole, I feel stable that way, whereas with forearm grip I am kept closer to the pole and feel like I might tip backwards (which I did a lot when learning, oops)
Split grip aysha seems impossible to begin with but once you find your 'center' of balance its easy!!! I got it in a few months after elbow grip. Actually learning the cartwheel mount into aysha helped cos you start with split grip and kick up into position and this helped my body learn where to stop and hold. I couldn't learn where my center was from just inverting and getting into split grip from there (maybe im weird). I can do it from an invert now but only cos I learnt from a cartwheel how to find my balance
