Hi Veena, when it comes to looking for a new place, do you have any way of knowing if the ceiling will have joists or is a drop/false ceiling?
Here are some tips for looking for joists
Check the Basement/Crawlspace: Go to the lowest level (unfinished is best). Look up at the floor joists to immediately see which way they run.
Locate the Main Beam: Joists usually rest on a central beam that runs perpendicular to them, supporting the floor.
Check HVAC/Plumbing: Ductwork or pipes often run parallel to joists to avoid cutting through them, hinting at the direction.
Identify Load-Bearing Walls: If a wall runs perpendicular (at a \(90^{\circ }\) angle) to the joists, it is likely a load-bearing wall holding them up.
I’m low tech and just knock on the ceiling and use a stud finder to locate my stud/joist
As far as drop or false ceiling, those you can push up with your hand or any long item like a broom. These ceilings will not feel solid.
Are you looking at a new place? If so that’s exciting. It’s always a challenge to find a place that can accommodate my poles 🙂
Hi veena, this makes sense, but how do you do all this while looking for a place? I’m not sure you can do all that during a house inspection haha
I have! It’s going to be a big purchase so you have the right to check things out. Bring a ladder and stud finder.
