Today, if you’re feeling ready, work on the split grip or twisted split grip Ayesha. Remember when using split grip you should maintain a slight bend in the “crotch level” elbow, not the overhead elbow that is reaching down towards the floor. When using a twisted split grip, both elbows should remain straight, locked, but not hyperextended.

Pro tip: When analyzing a pole video or watching a live performance, it can be challenging to know whether someone is using a split grip or twisted split grip. The key is to look at the dancer’s elbow. In split grip the elbow pit is facing the audience, but in twisted grip the shoulder rotation causes the elbow pit to face the dancer, so the bone of the elbow [humerus] is pointing toward the pole instead of the elbow pit [cubital fossa]. Here’s a visual for you!

  • Split grip – Elbow pit faces the audience
  • Twisted grip – Elbow pit faces the dancer
