How much you pay your instructors may depend on a few factors: You can pay them by student ($10 per head here) which may make the instructor more responsible for bringing business to the studio, or flat rate ($25-$40 per class). But that would also depend on how many poles you have–if you have 10 poles, obviously it’s better for the studio if you pay a flat rate. And it would also depend on whether you think it’s ok for students to share a pole, and how long classtime is. And of course, you’ve got to figure out how much you’re going to charge for classes: single drop-in class, or packages of 10, etc. I believe most instructors are independent contractors, but check with your accountant to see what the advantages/disdvantages are in terms of taxes. As for hiring teachers, I agree with Phillypolejess about finding people who can approach a move from many different angles. Make sure they have fitness insurance unless the studio insurance umbrellas them as well. This is great: I’m really excited for you!

Yup, I’m working on this, too! My pole teacher gave me this as an exercise: climb the pole, do a pole sit, holding with your hands, release the sit and bring body to the side of the pole, engage the abs and bring your knees up to your elbows as many times as you can. I’m up to…2. But here’s a small tip: don’t hang too long after releasing the pole sit or it’ll seem like gravity is working overtime!

    OUCH!

Yes, I agree that the host was a moron: smug little sneer in his voice when he said "pole dancing".

A shout out to a member here who was so kind as so send me song I had asked about. It was such a nice and thoughtful gesture–it really exemplified the essence of StudioVeena: creating community. So thank you, and thank you Studio Veena for creating something really special!

Take a look at Roxy’s vid on abdominal exercises for Sissybuns. She’s doing a lot of the things that Azzwoo is describing and her form is very clear. In terms of pole moves, the split V spin and chair with extended legs always gets to me. But the split V spin usually requires a bracket/split grip and that calls for a lot of upper body strength, which is difficult if you’re beginning.

And I have to add, Roxy, that you are spectacular at gracefully lifting into anything inverted. I swear, you’re my role model!

I’m average height (5’5"–but that also means I’m tall for a Chinese gal!) but underweight and I completely prefer the 50mm. I’ve tried the 45mm brass at different studios, but it always seems too tiny for me. My hands are relatively small but I have long fingers and when I’m on the 45mm, it doesn’t feel like I can use the strength in my hands in a significant way. I would have to agree with Violet and say that a chrome 50mm Xpole is something you really can’t go wrong with.

Thank God you’re alright! I mean, a big forehead bump and a fat lip aren’t tiny things, but thank God you didn’t break your neck! It’s so interesting when we "mess up" moves we feel we’ve always gotten before. I think it’s just the universe’s way of telling us to be present in each moment. In another thread I once posted how I dislike the word "mastered" simply for that reason: even though I’ve been walking for 39 years and feel like I’ve mastered the art of walking around, there’s no guarantee that I won’t trip or stumble (yes, I’m repeating myself, sorry girls!). So please don’t feel discouraged or embarrassed–every single one of us, Veena, Felix, Jamilla and Jenyne included, have fallen, gotten injured, busted something pole dancing, perhaps even on the simplest moves. One time I got a huge bruise and felt like I popped out my hip doing a pirouette! Does anyone else have a story about how they might have gotten banged up doing something they’ve done a billion times before?

Apparently that show was filmed well over a year ago. The woman she and her mom took the class from is my former instructor, Susan Hilferty in Coral Gables, FL. I’m going to guess the Hogan women were a handful!

I actually watched the show because an east coast friend had mentioned it on Facebook. Honestly, the girl came out, got on top of the ice cream truck and sang her song. It looked to me like she used the pole more as support while she sang and the truck moved. SHE DID NOT DO ANY MOVEMENTS THAT YOU COULD EVEN CONSIDER DANCING. I didn’t even see the point of her being there except maybe to elevate her so more of the audience could see her. If she had actually been pole dancing, I would have felt very uneasy about her because of her age and her influence on young girls. But truly, she wasn’t pole dancing at all.

I’m sorry, I thought the confusion had been cleared up!
The flamingo that I had been taught and currently teach, is what I’ve heard referred to as "pole overs". It’s a standing move, hooking the knee either in front of the pole or around from the back. You can arch or bend in any direction. I had a student perform that move because her hands were very, very wet and she couldn’t grip in any way. If I’m not describing it correctly, imagine first a knee hold, then imagine releasing the bottom leg straight down until the foot is in the floor. That would be a front flamingo (to me).

Glitter, you weren’t rejected in the least! Clearly she wanted you, but thought that both you and her club would make more money if some changes were made. I think it would be a total drag if she hired you on your incredible talent and then you wasted hour after hour NOT making any money! I’m sorry you were hurt but try to look at this in the most positive light: IF you want to tone things up, you’ve got a great job waiting for you at the end of the month and that’s a great motivator! Don’t not do it because it hurt your ego if it is something you want. More than likely you will come against worse with girls in the club or customers. You gotta have tough skin to work in the entertainment industry and even tougher skin to work in the adult entertainment industry. Ages ago when I was trying to become an actress in NY, I would get cut from castings (even though they liked me a lot) because I am Chinese. It’s nothing I can do anything about and it’s nothing I would do anything about if given the choice. Figure out if it’s worth it to you–whether you will get what you want in the end, and if the ends justify the means. We’re behind you 100%!

Please gush as much as you want, because we’ll all agree that Wendy is FREAKING AMAZING! Thanks again for posting a vid from the workshop. It looked like the best fun and that through her amazingness, encouraged each person to go beyond her perceived limits–which to me, is the markings of a true Teacher. You guys are really lucky!

I believe that on the Lil Mynx, you can make it slightly shorter or taller by twisting the top part–at least on the stainless ones. There’s an arrow that should let you know but I think it’s clockwise to make it shorter and counterclockwise for taller. I’m not sure about the powder coated ones, though. I hope this helps!

Yes, they are what FreeTheSun called "pole overs". I just learned it as flamingo:
front flamingo: knee is hooked in front of the pole
back flamingo: knee is hooked around back of the pole
In the club world, when you bend over (any which way), it gives the audience a peek at your "bits and pieces".

My jaw is on the floor…

She is so mind-blowing! The thing that is so amazing is that she doesn’t do any overtly sensual movements–it’s her grace and effortless flow from one move to another that is so sexy (to me). Of course I "favorited" the vid immediately and will be watching it over and over again.
