I don’t know if it’s this, but check that screw thingie that’s between your top pole piece and the dome (on the adjuster part). It should be down, tight against the pole piece, & not up at the dome. That’s the only thing i can think of that may be causing that. Either way, I hope you figure it out! And if you do, please let us know what it was in case someone else has this problem in the future! Good luck!!!

I know this as the "archer". I agree with Charley about learning it from forearm or elbow grip first! i’ve been doing it with forearm grip (haven’t tried it with elbow yet), for several months, & i’m still waaaay too scared to try it with split grip yet! Make sure to engage your abs while doing this, & definitely make sure your grip is extremely secure, and don’t try to arch to your limit at first- it’s easy to lose balance!

I’ve always had a slouching problem since i was little, but after about a year of pole dancing people started to tell me how much my posture has improved! I believe that part of the reason is that my back has gotten stronger. The other part of the reason i think is flexibility improvement of the chest and shoulders.
I always do specific exercises right before i pole, and i can feel like they help me keep my back straighter while i pole dance.. then i do them again when i am done working out/ dancing.
Here are the exercises:1) Standing to the left of your pole, grasp the pole with your right hand, arm straight. Height should be a little higher than shoulders. Then turn/twist your body towards the left, and you should feel a good stretch in your shoulder. If you lower your arm to shoulder height, then you’ll get more of a chest stretch. Do both.
2) Same as 1st exercise, but turn your hand so that thumb is down.. this stretches another part of your shoulder, but not your chest. Still good to do though.
3) After you’ve done exercises 1&2 with both arms (obviously left arm will be with you to right side of pole, & turning body right), stand with your back to the pole, feet touching the base, clasp your hands together behind the pole, & lean forward, leading with your chest. Be very gentle when you pull yourself back into the pole to release the stretch.
4) This one is a yoga pose, but i don’t know what it’s called. You kneel on the floor, knees apart, but don’t sit on your legs; keep your body from the knees & up straight. Don’t have your toes curled under; keep them flat. Engaging your abs, slowly lean back (as if doing a back bend kind of), while reaching back with your hands and grabbing your heels. This is a great one for counter-acting the upper back hunch.
I don’t know if you do these already, but hope it helps you some.. they’ve definitely helped me a lot!
Disclaimer: I’m not a fitness expert, so if anyone else has an opinion on these exercises, or can add something i might be missing in technique/safety, please do let me/us know! -

I think it’s possible for almost anyone. I started poling at 29 & had barely ever stretched before in my life.. i was definitely a couple feet off the ground when getting a split-stretch position. I still don’t have them, but my flexibility has increased DRAMATICALLY ever since i started stretching. I don’t stretch as often as i should, but after 1.5 years i am now getting pretty close to attaining them. I think that you being only 20, you’ll be able to see great results if you stick to a good stretching routine (hopefully you’ll be more consistent than i am). It’s a lot of hard work, & definitely time consuming, but it’s so worth it!! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif One thing to remember, is that consistency is more important than intensity!

Polergirl I’ve noticed this in myself too! "Finishing" a move or concept makes the dance look less sloppy & more graceful.. although it still takes a bit of conscious effort for me much of the time.
Another thing i’ve noticed to help my "performance" look better is to hold the move/pose for a couple seconds. For example, i tend to move around a lot in my gemini for no reason, & it just looks sloppy. I found that holding a still pose for just a second or two gives the viewer a chance to really "register" the move/pose, before moving on to something else. The way you come out of a "finished" move is also important.. aaah so many details to making a performance look good!!!
