How much you pay your instructors may depend on a few factors: You can pay them by student ($10 per head here) which may make the instructor more responsible for bringing business to the studio, or flat rate ($25-$40 per class). But that would also depend on how many poles you have–if you have 10 poles, obviously it’s better for the studio if you pay a flat rate. And it would also depend on whether you think it’s ok for students to share a pole, and how long classtime is. And of course, you’ve got to figure out how much you’re going to charge for classes: single drop-in class, or packages of 10, etc. I believe most instructors are independent contractors, but check with your accountant to see what the advantages/disdvantages are in terms of taxes. As for hiring teachers, I agree with Phillypolejess about finding people who can approach a move from many different angles. Make sure they have fitness insurance unless the studio insurance umbrellas them as well. This is great: I’m really excited for you!

Yup, I’m working on this, too! My pole teacher gave me this as an exercise: climb the pole, do a pole sit, holding with your hands, release the sit and bring body to the side of the pole, engage the abs and bring your knees up to your elbows as many times as you can. I’m up to…2. But here’s a small tip: don’t hang too long after releasing the pole sit or it’ll seem like gravity is working overtime!

Sissy, that’s awesome! You go, girl!!!!

OUCH!
Yes, I agree that the host was a moron: smug little sneer in his voice when he said "pole dancing".

A shout out to a member here who was so kind as so send me song I had asked about. It was such a nice and thoughtful gesture–it really exemplified the essence of StudioVeena: creating community. So thank you, and thank you Studio Veena for creating something really special!

Take a look at Roxy’s vid on abdominal exercises for Sissybuns. She’s doing a lot of the things that Azzwoo is describing and her form is very clear. In terms of pole moves, the split V spin and chair with extended legs always gets to me. But the split V spin usually requires a bracket/split grip and that calls for a lot of upper body strength, which is difficult if you’re beginning.

And I have to add, Roxy, that you are spectacular at gracefully lifting into anything inverted. I swear, you’re my role model!

I’m average height (5’5"–but that also means I’m tall for a Chinese gal!) but underweight and I completely prefer the 50mm. I’ve tried the 45mm brass at different studios, but it always seems too tiny for me. My hands are relatively small but I have long fingers and when I’m on the 45mm, it doesn’t feel like I can use the strength in my hands in a significant way. I would have to agree with Violet and say that a chrome 50mm Xpole is something you really can’t go wrong with.

Yay! Congratulations Violet! In my opinion, getting the Superman is definitely a milestone! Hooray!!!!

I mean, a big forehead bump and a fat lip aren’t tiny things, but thank God you didn’t break your neck! It’s so interesting when we "mess up" moves we feel we’ve always gotten before. I think it’s just the universe’s way of telling us to be present in each moment. In another thread I once posted how I dislike the word "mastered" simply for that reason: even though I’ve been walking for 39 years and feel like I’ve mastered the art of walking around, there’s no guarantee that I won’t trip or stumble (yes, I’m repeating myself, sorry girls!). So please don’t feel discouraged or embarrassed–every single one of us, Veena, Felix, Jamilla and Jenyne included, have fallen, gotten injured, busted something pole dancing, perhaps even on the simplest moves. One time I got a huge bruise and felt like I popped out my hip doing a pirouette! Does anyone else have a story about how they might have gotten banged up doing something they’ve done a billion times before?

That was a nice piece. Thank you for posting it!

Wow, that was really incredible! I can’t believe you can caterpillar on a spinning pole! And I also loved the slow emergence into superman–that was really lovely.

Someone else had mentioned it one time before, but I cannot for the life of me remember who!
