Both very inspiring and lovely replies!! I want to make it clear however that this is a Video Challenge, just like our regular monthly challenge. These replies are totally what the spirit of this challenge is about, but it would be even more powerful in video form. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_flower.gif

Hi Tammy, portableninja is correct about the contracting of opposing muscle groups. Contracting the opposing muscle group is something you can do but you don't have to do. The most important thing to remember is to listen to your body, if something doesn't feel right or hurts, think sharp sudden pain. If you can't breath normally through a stretch, then you might be forcing too much. There is no reason to stop using the yoga blocks or force the body into positions that don't work. Flexibility takes a lot of time.
If you would like to learn more about anatomy take a look at the foam roller lessons, making sure to read the description for the lesson as well. These lessons are not just about using the roller but give a look into where the muscles are and the movements they perform. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_flower.gif
For the fastest replies as Portableninja mentioned, you can always post a comment on the lesson you have a question about. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif

If you're new to pole dance you should have a full day of active rest or as I call it a "Rejuvenation day" in between pole sessions. If you don't take time to rest, you risk overuse injury and could compromise your progress. Muscle rebuilds (grows stronger) during REST, not during use. When you use the muscles heavily, the muscle fibers tear down, this is what you want…. however, if you don't allow for recovery (rest) then the fibers will not be able to repair, there for impeding growth.
I'm not sure if you are using the pole for all of the classes you listed or not. If so you might want to think about resting more between classes. If the classes really vary the muscle groups used or some focus more on cardio then strength you should be fine.https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_flower.gif

Oh yeah, I have worn VS panties as pole wear and they workout great! I get a lot of my "pole wear" at Target and Walmart.

Hi mssoulpole! Your hand strength will improve over time. I'm not sure what day you're on but you'll see hand and forearm strength training in Day 2. If you would like to get started right away here is a link for the hand strength lesson https://www.studioveena.com/lessons/view/b9b362ac-b880-11df-856f-001b214581be
Keep in mind that its not just the hands holding you up, you should also be squeezing the pole near the arm pit and side of torso. Being able to lift up for even 1 second is so common for new dancers!! All of the strength work is meant to be challenging. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_rambo.gif If you feel like the hands are really holding you back try wearing rubber dish washing glove for extra grip, until you become stronger. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_heart1.gif

I do think a thread like this could get ugly, but I feel we've done a good job keeping it friendly. It's allowing others insight into how they feel about or see moves, opening up conversation about it. I think over all it's been good conversation. I know I've learned from it.
My style has been called old fashion… I guess, meaning I don't always bust out all the newest pole work out there? But honestly, I'm happy to represent the "old fashion", "basic" pole dancer. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif
New pole dancers, never forget, basic's are the foundation of beautiful dance!!!!!

Yes, keep at it. Dance is something we have to work at so practice, practice! With pole dance you can add whatever style dance you like to it, so try taking some of your favorite dance moves from the crunk class to the pole! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif

Yeah the girls are so right! Depending on the camera you use and angles you can end up looking totally different on video than you do in person! It can also be one of those things that you have to get use to seeing. It can be really challenging to look past what we "think" are flaws. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_heart1.gif

Hi Stephnicoleex3, You can absolutely use pole only as a workout it's self! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gifBut it's important to do some conditioning and strength work as part of your pole practice. This will help prevent injury. If you're taking the lessons here they are complete, and will even give you the proper conditioning and flexibility needed for pole. Some studios do not have conditioning in their curriculum so find one that does. If you're looking to compete then doing some cross training with weights and other muscle building activities is a good idea, but not needed for the amateur pole dancer. So short answer is no, you don't need to do any other workout, however you should be progressing in the right order to build strength and prevent injury.

Hi Justme718, When you're new to pole dancing or working out, take a day of rest in between sessions. This is super important so your muscles can recover, they will not grow stronger unless you let them rest.
Here are two videos that you might find helpful as a new dancer.
Getting started http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u-Bgmg3jNmQ
Tips for Success http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CSYHrZjzSnU&list=UUup79MtZnWP_SCAHeVlmzdQ&index=7
There is nothing that will speed up the healing process, so again rest is important, but doing what the other girls have suggested can help you feel better. The foam roller feels great too. Feel better soon! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_flower.gif
