I workout 6 days a week…One full day of total rest. No stretching…nothin just rest.

    Here is my latest schedule:
2 days of weights (1 day is lower, other is upper) with some pole at the end of my strength training.

The day after any of my heavy training days I do hoop, yoga, dance (not on the pole) If I feel fatigued I’ll warm up and just stretch. If I did a lower body workout I might do some pole tricks that involve upper body.

1 day of heavy pole dancing with tricks…this is typically Mid week so I can keep Monday and Fri or Sat as my weight training days.

This is just for now, I’ll back off in a month or so focusing more on pole and less on strength training…re evaluate then go from there.

I use the 5 min rule…..if I start working out and after 5 mins I still feel weak and blah. I take that as a cue, I’m pushing to hard. It might mean I do a lighter workout or I stop all together and rest that day.

    Then

If you wanted…. you could ask a few Veeners if they be interested in meeting in the chat room once a week or how ever often to stretch together!!! Cams or no cams it would still be fun and leave those who needed motivation feeling obligated to show up, therefore more likely to follow through. If the timing was right I might even show!! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif

The 5 Breath rule isn’t the one and only thing, but it is a simple test you can do yourself, along with answering the other questions in that lesson. Remember many studios will teach spins right away, I just feel its better to have a little bit of strength under your belt before moving to spins. The "When to Spin" is just a guide line and if you personally feel you can’t gain the strength you need by pole work alone then its time to hit the weights. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_rambo.gif In the lessons here…I have to assume the user is doing their strength training 3 times a week, and move through the lessons in order. If they are they should be able to perform pole holds, climbs and other strength based moves before they even get to the Spins in the lessons. As for strength work, remember your starting with 2 to 3 sets and just like all other strength work once you reach a high number of reps you know you have gained strength and its time to increase the work load. So as you can see this will vary from person to person. Some may reach the "When to Spin" lesson, in a month others my have to build up strength for a few months. Klarity If your signed up for the online lessons and worried about progressing to fast feel free to send me an email and I will happily meet you in the chat room and go over more suggestions. If you have a web cam we can even take a look at your forum ect… https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif

No your not a wimp!! Sounds like over training plain and simple. Your body is trying to tell you it’s tired. Where should I start….

First I totally understand how important getting YOUR personal pole time in is…as a mom I struggle with this too. So one thing to think about is how your teaching. A lot of instruction can be done by showing once…if that…and then giving an easy to follow explanation. I know its easy to say "watch me" over and over but you’ll tire yourself out. Your students can still have a great pole experience without you having to show them over and over. Working in a gym as personal trainer I would never be able to do the workout with each client and as a pole instructor it might be wise to take the same approach. That being said…Its also going to depend on the style of class your teaching…is it tricks or a full dance routine each time?? If its a dance routine go through most of it with them but skip the intense things like inverts, spins. Help them with the steps and give cues for when to do the moves/tricks. If its a tricks class this could be approached very much like personal training where you do more explaining than physically doing the tricks over and over.

The others are right about DOMS and using massage, drink tons of water too, to help flush out any toxins. Also make sure your eating the right kinds of foods before and after a workout to replenish what you have lost.

Someone who is new to exercise/poling needs a full day in between workouts. When your a beginner pole is very much a full body workout every time. A seasoned individual can ask more of themselves. BUT they need to be aware of when their body is telling them to back off. My latest workout schedule is six days a week…but… I never focus on the same muscle group 2 days in a row, when I strength train and I cross train. This is important so the muscles recover fully before you stress them again.

I know when your trying to prepare for something it feels like you have to do more and more, but it would be terrible if you over trained in had developed an injury because of it. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_safesex.gif

One handed spins are not beginner moves, so save them for later in your training. Spinny and static require different techniques so be aware of that. If your trying to enter into your spins (on spin mode) like someone who is using a static pole you’ll fly off!! Static spins are all about using timing, legs and body weight to create momentum. With spin you have to learn to control and hold a position. If you happen to be taking the lessons on here just know they are all taught on a static pole. I have had some think I was using spinny and they couldn’t figure out why they couldn’t hang on. LOL

June 28, 2010 at 12:51 am in reply to: Heels or no?

lol Looks like you have found a new use for the ottoman! I like to dance in both heels and barefoot. For me it depends on the song I’m using. Empy is right about not using heels when your just learning tricks, you risk twisting an ankle or worse. Once you are comfortable with your moves you might find that adding heels will make tricks like inverting more difficult. Practicing inverting by standing on your tippy toes can help prepare you for inverting in heels. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif

Tigger is right about the lessons. I have placed them in order so its easy to know what to work on and what is appropriate for beginners. Also I have strength work, to strengthen forearms, and the whole body this will help prevent injury. I do as many moves as possible from the floor first. Always stretch your forearms after EVERY pole session, tendinitis is common with new dancers. As well as shoulder and upper back injuries most coming from bad form or over use. Do NOT rush into inverting! Have fun. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_flower.gif https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_flower.gif

I think someone… was talking about someone else…. saying they were taking some free lessons at at studio…not here??? There are some free sample lessons at the top of the site and I have some posted to my Studioveena Youtube account. The lessons here are not free though, the site couldn’t be supported if EVERYTHING was free. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_flower.gif I personally think the cost of the lessons is very reasonable, I have worked many hrs on them and I am continuously adding new ones.

Chair and Front hook are not beginner spins in my method of teaching, too much stress can be placed on the inside arm, because of the position of the moves.

As for the spinning pole, static and spin require 2 different techniques. I tend to steer dancers towards static work first. This allows them to have a good solid understanding of how to use momentum to spin your body around the pole. Some dancers dislike working static because they learned on spinny first and feel static was too frustrating to work with…I said SOME not all. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_tongue.gif However, spinning poles can be great to work on your strength, because the "spins" on a spinning pole are really just holds! Both have good qualities, I love the satisfaction I get out of creating a powerful spin or pole move with my own momentum though. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_dwarf.gif

June 23, 2010 at 10:09 pm in reply to: Veena’s pole moves

I can’t speak for other studios but I do know many (not all) do teach spins as beginner moves. I do not!! The structure of my Lessons are all part of my Veena method. I have had far to many emails from pole dancers asking for help because they suffered a shoulder or forearm/wrist injury. Every one of these were beginning dancers and they were working on spins. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_confused.gif

I went into pole dance very strong, I am a personal trainer and had been lifting for yrs. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_rambo.gif I developed my method after having my 4th baby. I had been off the pole for months and had was too busy to exercise so it made me realize how demanding pole really is to the untrained body. I had to start at the very beginning! Soooo, I took a long hard look at all of the spins and pole moves and came up with what I feel is the safest way to introduce a beginner to pole. Its very important to have the proper positioning but without out the right conditioning you’ll be susceptible to injury. And that is why my lessons may confuse some who take studio classes. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif

Beginner spins are those where your body is facing your pole and using 2 hands, some reverse spins as well. Forward facing and one handed are all intermediate. One armed and split grip spins are no, no’s for newbies! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif
