Everyone has some great advice! Pointing the foot really can help get the heel poking out more (and it just looks better)
Remember…..You must be solid in your Butterfly before moving on the the extended variation, as mentioned in the lesson. The upper body plays a large roll in this move, and the farther you extend the leg away from you, the more difficult it will be to hold, if your only using the heel. The heel is there to help hold you in place, not do the work for your upper body. Also you may want to try thinking about pressing the back of the calf against/into the pole instead of just hooking it….. If that makes sense.
Holly, posting a video would be helpful if that is possible.

Mechie the Play-Doh reference made me giggle a bit,…..I know what you mean, but for me its on my belly! Yes, your Knee Pit will toughen up and the pain goes away. I have a bit of rough skin from time to time when I have done a lot of Gemini's. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_flower.gifThere is no rush to take the hands off, Some dancers may never let go with the hands. Its all about what a person is comfortable with. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif

Timing is everything when you have kids and a business….some of the events have come up at an inconvenient time. In addition to the things Chem listed I have done Pole Jams in several locations over the yrs, just had a fun one in Vegas! The great thing is, through my lessons I have been able to reach out and teach so many people that can't afford workshops or are in area's where they are not running workshops.
I do set goals for myself if you follow me on FB and here, you'll have seen me post pics of my back flexibility progress working towards moves like the Advanced Ballerina. I'm hoping to hold a 10 sec handstand by my birthday in week! I never stop learning or working on new things.
My kids will only be little for such a short time, I will be able to teach pole for a very long time. (yeah I'll still planning on teaching when I'm 100 yrs old, crusin in my hoveround) https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif
Right now, doing the best I can with Studioveena and my kids are more important than being included the list of top Elite Pole Dancers. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif

Hips over head, then lift the legs….that is the key for any of these balance moves. Finding the best hand placement when doing a Hanstand Press and Bending the knees (while feet are on the floor) for the Pencil mount are good tricks to try, allowing you to move the hips over head.https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_flower.gif
If your taking them….

AdministratorSeptember 5, 2011 at 4:41 pm in reply to: Outburst of blood vessels on face from inversion???Its ok…the red dots will go away. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gifWhen working on strenuous things like inverting and such, this can happen. Its VERY important your being sure to breath (try making a haaaaa sound) when you're moving up into inverted positions. I think I talk about that in the Basic invert lesson, I know its in one of them if your taking the lessons. Holding the breath can cause these dots and you'll raise your blood pressure too!

AdministratorSeptember 3, 2011 at 6:49 pm in reply to: handstands/elbowstands/iguana – flexibility issue?Sparrow, Remember flexibility takes time if your see improvement then your doing things right. If your not seeing any then its time to take a look at it. There are a few different stretches for the hamstrings in the lessons they are all in a row. Also be sure to stretch the quads as well.
Until your hams become nice a flexy you can just bend the knees as you walk your hips over head.

Well said Empy!

AdministratorSeptember 3, 2011 at 3:24 pm in reply to: handstands/elbowstands/iguana – flexibility issue?Yep you guys are right! To easily find a balance point you need to have the flexibility to get your butt and hips over your head. This goes for elbow forearm and handstands too. Strength in the shoulders, back and abs do play a part as well when your lifting up.

@ Cinara I thought you were clear.

Knowing how to fall is fine…practicing falling that i do not agree with. Cinara had some great tips.
Accidents happen on and off the pole its part of life. I never thought I would break my foot while walking into my garage or have severe nerve damage from banging my elbow on a chair while sewing! LOL
I include exits as part of every lesson sometime multiple variations and always encourages everyone to use those and not jump out of a move. When I rode horse and was in figure skating they never had us work on "falling" . Any sport I have done they encourage you to relax if your falling.
-
Learning to work within your abilities is always best…. start working on moves as low to the floor as possible and as slowly with control as possible https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif Pole Dance should be fun, there is no need for everyone to perform every move out there. I agree that learning to "fall" is not a good idea https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_eek.gif
