It seems like most people trying this don’t reach the bottom hand down far enough. It’s a bit scary at first, but you do need to reach pretty far down in order to feel secure holding your weight on that bottom hand. You also need to tighten your abs and legs and butt and well, really just squeeze the heck out of everything you’ve got https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif Good luck with it.

Just wanted to echo yoga’s excellent comments. In fact, not only do we teach that your head shouldn’t be touching the ground–pushing up out of your shoulders–it can even be taught/done with placing your head onto your forearms, if your hands are clasped at the pole and your elbows apart. This move depends a good bit on anatomy and length of your upper arms, and you may have to play around a bit, but by all means, keep your weight off your head. I wish you a speedy recovery. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_blackeye.gif

I’d like to echo Veena on this one. I have only recently gotten my TG. I tried it months ago (under the tutelage of my friend and co-instructor, the amazing Fleur), and hurt my wrist. Twisting your wrist puts an incredible amount of torque on the outside of the joint and connective tissues. I rested that wrist for months, doing nothing in a twist, until it finally healed. PLEASE be careful trying this move!!
How did I finally get it? Top arm fairly low ( I have the strong arm up), body angled well out from the pole, start by twisting so that my face and pelvis begin facing the floor and I’m on tiptoe. I kick up and reach the top foot past the pole as I invert. This move is easier with your legs split than it is with them together (as Fleur pointed out to me.)
 PLEASE be careful!!! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_neutral.gif

Can’t say for sure of course, but having lived in NE for a long time and being familiar with the old house construction I’d say there’s a good chance he’s right and you will damage the ceiling. Have you tried using a studfinder on the ceiling?

Everyone’s right, I’d say. Poling has given me definition in my abs where I had none. I am thin and super strong, but genetically not pre-disposed to having a 6-pack. I think I could become emaciated and still not have them. I also love chocolate. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif Wendy T is a bodybuilder, you can find her early competition vids on YouTube.
In terms of building your abs, practicing shoulder mounts from seated on the floor is amazing. Just go partway and come back down, controlling the descent. Also, practicing elbow stand where you curl up instead of kick up, and control the descent back down the same way. You can even pause partway up and hold it in kind of a tuck–total ab burner.

Just to add on to what Charley said:
Extending your free leg and bringing it around you parallel to the floor really gives you the momentum you need to spin, so that you can shift your torso around through thigh hold and into scorpio on the other side.
Once you hook on the new side, you will find that you’re still spinning a little bit. Wait it out. Just hold the scorpio on the new side with your back nice and arched and allow the momentum to stop.
Then, extend your newly free leg and bring it around parallel to the floor, and repeat going the other way.
Waiting out that last momentum spin really "finishes" the move before you go the other way.
Oh and dont be afraid to use your hands until you feel really comfy with this!

It was terrific! So much fun to see Veena again and to pole with the wonderful ladies of the Bay Area. We hope you can all join us next time!
