I hear you on the cycles thing. I have dabbled in so many different art/craft things. I cycle with my major obsessions, too, but those tend to be longer. I’ve found myself struggling w/ pole disinterest sometimes, and it really helps me to find something to challenge me. So, right now I’m doing "back-to-basics". I’m trying to understand the underlying forces in the moves I already know. That gives me something to focus my attention, and allow my obsession to run wild. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif

One thing I would suggest, though, is embrace your seasons! Every time you come back to poling, you aren’t starting over. You body remembers, even if your progress isn’t as fast as you want.

Trying to work against your natural inclinations is a lot of effort, and you are fairly likely to fail. Instead, look at what result you want, and use your "weaknesses" to get there. I have a bit of a rebellious streak, so I’ve learned to make myself rules that help me when I break them. So, I’ll say to myself — "you are only allowed to pole for 20 minutes today." Then, if I do my 20 minutes and want to stop, I met my goal. But if I’m feeling a bit naughty, I end up doing the "just one more song" routine, and I end up poling for an hour!

I am a walking pole accident and am a very naughty girl.

THANK YOU for this post!!! It sounds like you push yourself hard, and you don’t think about caution, because you are so into what you are doing. Makes you an amazing dancer — but with the cost of more accidents. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif

That means you know the real consequences of things. Ooooo! The hamstring one makes me cringe!!! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_eek.gif
But now I know not to do that!! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif

You’re too fun!

I have worked a lot on being on my toes (I walk around that way at home whenever I think about it!) And yeah, I’ve had the problems with cramps too. Mine don’t tend to be in the foot itself, but rather in the calves. I don’t get the cramps when I’m actually working out much, but they happen when I’m sleeping. When it starts happening, I take a Magnesium supplement, and that seems to help.

I would guess that since your cramps are happening during the workout, it is probably just a muscle fatigue thing. One thing that really helps the foot muscles is to roll your foot over a small ball (like a golf ball). It will probably hurt some if the muscles are grumpy, but it will help stretch the muscles and keep them in good shape. Try the magnesium, too. It may or may not help, but it’s not likely to hurt you.

Be patient! You’ll get the foot/leg strength before you know it! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif

Yes, Denielle Rueda-Watts is probably one of the best pole dancers I’ve seen! I so wish there was more material available with her on youtube or whatnot. She’s a great inspiration: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pp09Bkh4ZVs" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

HOLY S**T!! She is amazing!! Thanks so much for posting this. I love her musicality. And WTF!!! The move she did at 1:12… Anybody know what it is?

Welcome to the obsession!!!! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_twisted.gif

Pole has really changed my body. I’ve been poling a little over a year, and I have strong, toned arms, and a butt! I’ve never had much of a butt before, so that is way cool! I’ve also noticed a change in my pelvic tilt, and in the way my shoulders/chest work together. It’s kind of hard to say what happened first, though.

I pole daily a lot of the times (things have been crazy lately, so 4 x’s a week now), and it’s never caused me an issue. Since you are already fit, I think doing it daily would probably be ok… But do pay attention to your body and don’t let your enthusiasm get the best of you! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif

You can also do aerobics type stuff w/ the pole. Dance around it, but don’t do any strength moves. Then you can still be poling, but in a less intensive way. My personal opinion is the best exercise is the one you’ll actually do!

Good luck!!

I agree with the niche concept. What you have to sell is YOU — and no one is as good at that as you are! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif Think about the customers you want — who are they, where do they hang out, what do they do when they’re not poling. Then see how you can be in some of those places. Having a big school nearby can be a blessing. Being big has it’s disadvantages, too, and there will be plenty of people who like the location, but didn’t really like their experience at the big place. You give them an easy option to come to.

Remember that you ARE good at this. Don’t give up! Live your passion! People feel that.

BEST of luck!!!

i think the only time you really "need" to do it hooked is when you’re going into an allegra

This is a GREAT point! I haven’t been able to get my arm into a strong enough position for the allegra, and I think that’s why.

I like the look of the ankle/thigh hold better, too — especially when you spiral down to the ground. I knew there must be some things that the knee pit did better, though. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_thumright.gif

A "nerdy" person — someone intelligent. A smart, playful conversation (especially on some obscure topic) is much sexier than how a person is built. I’m also a sucker for attention…

My big weakness is "looks like someone I loved". That gives me an interesting range!!

Well, it turns out that due to some extra circumstances, it was easy to make my decision about the coed party that’s happening tonight. I’m not going to go. My husband just started a new job and is working during the party and he can’t come with me. He’s uncomfortable with me going alone, and I assured him that I’d stay home. I guess that gives me until the next party to do some more self-exploration.

Loopy — I just wanted to point out something… You and your hubby prayed about the party… you were conflicted about the answer… And then "circumstances" happened that kept you from going. Sounds like God at work to me! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif

Just keep praying about integrating your poling with your husband. Don’t worry! Trust that God is listening and will be with you to help you. Keep your ears and your heart open, and the way will become clear. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif

I’ve never heard however that the "factor of safety" is two times the stated weight limit? I truly cannot imagine most poles being able to support over 400 pounds worth of a dancer or dancers.

I have an engineering background, and that is where I got the concept. Here’s a wiki article of "factor of safety": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Factor_of_safety" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I don’t know what that factor is for poles, but here’s what they say about buildings… "Buildings commonly use a factor of safety of 2.0 for each structural member. The value for buildings is relatively low because the loads are well understood and most structures are redundant."

Since poles are used in an uncontrolled, variable environment, I figured they would have a fairly high factor of safety built in.

You are absolutely correct about HOW a force is applied to the pole makes a big difference in what happens. I have to admit that I sometimes think about the statics and dynamics of being on the pole. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_lol.gif The amazing engineering is one of the things that really attracts me to poling.

I would guess that most of the poles will hold more than the weight their company states as that is a liability issue and they want to leave room for error/safety margin.

I would not recommend the Lil Mynx at all! I’ve seen that pole slide across the floor when someone who was about 170 did a hand stand onto the pole and it shifted over!

Of course the option of the permanent pole is the safest if you have it installed correctly.

ANY pole can fall. I’ve known two people who’ve had X-Poles fall. My Hubby regularly climbs and leans on my Lil Minx, with no problem. He’s well over 220 (the number is a bit of a secret!). The factor of safety is usually at least 2 times the stated weight limit.

Lil Minx definitely seems more stable on carpet than on hard floors. You have to really tighten the HECK out of the thing on laminate to keep it from moving. Mine on carpet is not very tight, and I’ve only had it move once, when I was pulling near the base.

GOOD LUCK!!

Poleophile – That tutorial really helps! Here’s the url for it for other folks:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fTa6rdZT_Ic&feature=channel

pp15171 — I appreciate the link, but I think that move is the reverse grab. Oddly, I have no problem with that one! I didn’t realize corkscrew was different until recently.

I think maybe I’m kicking out forward instead of sideways, making me bang back against the pole instead of sweeping around it. This IS a really pretty spin when done correctly!!

THANKS SO MUCH everybody! I’ll keep you updated on my progress.

Video link for the jasmine you’re talking about? A superman from this modified marley?!!! That would be so crazy cool. I can’t see how though. Someone show me! Damn, I need someone my level or above to pole jam with!

Oops — I just watched your video, and now I see your free leg is in FRONT of the pole! The Jasmine one has your free leg behind the pole. Since you have the pole btwn your legs, you can flip from Jasmine to superman. I wish I could post a video!! Hopefully I’ll have a new camera soon. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif
