god should 5 year olds have muscles like that? I'm talking about the other videos where he's weight training and with a 6 pack… he doesn't look too happy half the time, hope it's not pushy fame hungry parents… or I could just be reading too much into it and should just continue being amazed he's holding the flag for that darn long!

yeah fallowfield is student central! they do some classes in the armitage centre there if you wanted. Don't worry about the fitness thing, when I started if I exerted ANY energy I would get out of breath and go red in the face haha but lots of people are in the same boat as you, wouldn't get worried about them pushing you too far.

I'm nearer toward Bolton way but I'm in town a fair bit for training so I'm always up for a pole jam 😀 Can even help you with some beginner stuff if you needed!

Hey Miraine, which area of Manchester will you be moving too? You're right, there's quite a few studios around here and most are pretty good. If you've never done pole lessons before it might help you just to go to a beginner course or a couple of lessons at a studio just to make sure you know the basics and important stuff like warming up properly, what muscles you're engaging etc etc.

Once you are more confident and comfortable to practice by yourself you can go to town on youtube, veenas lessons and dvds etc. Also if you want a pole buddy, I'm always happy to make new pole friends! 😀

Best of luck, keep us up to date with how you progress 🙂

ooooh sounds so much fun! wish i had the money or i'd join ya! I wouldn't think NYC is dangerous at all if you just use your common sense (don't go down dark alleyways, if someone looks dodgy – they are, don't wander around at 4am in the morning etc etc). I didn't think it was any more dangerous or different from any major city… have you travelled by yourself before? If you're sensible I don't see any reason why anything really bad would happen to you!

I agree with everyone, I don't have much to add but I just wanted to lend my support to you 🙂 Know how rubbish it can make you feel when you can't help but compare yourself against someone – I'm doing that right now, I get really jealous and upset when I have to compete against trained dancers/ballerinas/gymnasts, I feel like a right rookie. But shrug it off, stick to your strengths, you'll get there! :)))

even if she can't pole dance she could've done some cool floor holds or make it look less…awkward. Strut about or something. The guy on the left looks like he's trying not to laugh haha. She's a Swedish singer, she won some kind of singing competition, I guess she was making a 'guest' appearance because battle of the pole is (usually) a really good pole event!!

pole jams are the BEST! it's just a get together and you practice whatever you want – or not! sometimes I stand about just chatting to others for upto half an hour haha. You always make a new friend at pole jams 😀

Hi Nicki, I only know of a couple of pole studios. Think you may know Amber Ray? She teaches at Milan pole dance studio and I heard that's good…

In London there's Elena Gibson, think her studio is just called Pole Dance School or something? In Paris there's Laurence Hilsum, not sure if she owns a studio or teaches at a school there but she's worth learning from!

I'm in Manchester and we have pole jams twice a week, my teacher's Karen Chaundy. It would be cool to meet you!!

I agree about Bobbi's, I went there for a year and only ever did 2 courses but I was there about 3 or 4 times a week doing their practice times – it's the BEST! The courses are the best, the teachers are best in the world but if you can't afford the classes practice time is as good if you just wanna do your own thing. It used to be $10 or so for 2 hrs with no instructor but I think it's been extended now, think it's from 2pm – 5pm. I met all my pole friends there, there's a guy called Andre that's always there and he's the nicest guy everrrrr and really really good 😛 so jealous of you lol

@eva, I had the same problem. I found distilled white vinegar but in the label it said it was distilled malt vinegar, the colour of it was just colourless/white and I got all confused and didn't buy it…

I'm having the exact same problem! there's been no change in pole training/strength training, only upped my stretching to 3 times a week around an hour or more each time. I've never had a problem getting into my left splits, right splits was ok and i was reeeeally close to getting my stomach/chest to the floor in the middle straddle splits but now I can hardly get down in my left splits!! I seemed to have taken a big step back in my flexibility and that in the space of a week or so, it's annoying and upsetting. I thought stretching more would help!!

is it more for cleaning the pole or putting on your hands? I'm very intruiged to see how others get along before I 'splash' out on a bottle of white vinegar lol

February 16, 2011 at 6:44 pm in reply to: Pole Dance Motivation

    Hi Be,

Think it's a phase that a lot of polers go through, though I scoffed at the idea that I would ever get bored of pole but I went through a phase like that the other month where I was fed up with it, had no motivation or interest in learning new moves and just pretty much 'blah' with it.

I'm now back into it again, mainly because I made myself enter a competition so I have something to work towards and then we had Alethea come and teach and she was really inspiring. Anyway, what I am saying is that the lack of motivation spell will end eventually. If you feel like you need a break from pole, take a break! There's no point in doing something you don't enjoy.

Don't get disheartened if you forgot some moves or you lost a little strength, all that comes back pretty quick (once you learn it you can't forget it!) and don't focus so much on achieving a move or feel like you're being forced to practice. Take it at your own pace, maybe put your favourite song on and just freestyle to it. Let yourself loosen up and don't worry about it 🙂

Hope you feel better about it soon!

February 16, 2011 at 6:37 pm in reply to: Pole “stage” name

Everyone's name is so nice! haha I want to use Quinn as mine because I really like the character Harlequin from Batman but someone already had Harley and (at the time) I didn't know anyone that had Quinn. Then I found someone else had chosen it too, which isn't such a suprise, but I wanted something special haha. Others on my list were Sephira and Jasmine..

See I try to choose something related to stuff I really like – like I love birds(especially owls) and trawled through species names but nothing sounded much like a stage name haha. I've kind of given up finding a stage name but if you get it right it adds so much to your performance (I think).

Some cool stage names i've heard are Felix (duh), Roxy, Cleo, Chilli, Daisy, Rocket, Bunni, Ryder, Harley, Sapphire, Shimmy, Missy etc.etc. think you just go through words and find something that fits your personality!!

45 all the way! even better for me is 38… but I can't find anywhere near me that have 38s… I have small hands and find gripping on the 50 hard and frustrating at the best of times but it is a standard pole size used in competitions and most studios around here use them so I have no choice 🙁 I personally find it easier to do most tricks on the 45 and it gives me more confidence to try new tricks without having to worry about grip problems etc.  The only thing I like 50 for is that it's a little more forgiving on my legs in terms of pain but I think a lot of the nerves in my legs have long since gone after learning some pole tricks lol

    welcome Lynda,

just noticed you guys mentioning KPF and The Studio and I've been to both when I lived in Wellie! Sonia from KPF was super lovely but was too far for me to get to so I went to the Studio where I just did practice times because they wouldn't let me join intermediate classes without going through beginners first. Oh how I miss Wellington!

i'd love to make a routine to this song (there are a couple different edits of it floating around on youtube, some without the string part, but they're all available on the Ghost In The Shell OST)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8b4XmI_QfRo

I know it's not very high energy but it's very mystic and I can visualise lots of cool floorwork for it!

    nice post 🙂

I've been told my 'style' is lyrical pole – which is I 'fit' moves to the lyrics e.g. a lyric like "lift me up", i'd pull up and maybe invert. It would annoy me if I couldn't find a move that would translate the lyrics, that why it takes me ages to come up with  a routine hahaha (i've only done 2…) I suppose I don't have to confidence to just freestyle or do combos and then put music over it.

Recently I've been looking at lyrical dancing too and trying to get ideas from that, I've always wanted to be a dancer but never got the chance to learn so I think I am trying to make up for lost time and make my routines seem more dance rather than just tricks (also partly because I can't do a lot of tricks ;))

I have tried to make up routines for more sexy pole moves or more upbeat songs but it doesn't feel 100% me doing that so i just accept it's not my style… though I am more than happy to do a raunchy dance that someone else has choreographed! Is a break from being all 'serious' trying to make up my own routine

for me it's about the story in the song and trying to interpret that through my pole routine, or at least try to convey to people watching how the song makes me feel. If they don't it doesn't matter anyway because I'm in my own little pole world where it's just me, the pole and the music :)))

    hey malkai,

theres a good few posts in the stretching & strength part of the forum on splits etc. https://www.studioveena.com/forums/view/Splits_in_6_weeks_2010-03-19_013304

this is the newest  one where a lot of the others are discussing on right now 🙂 umm other tips is just to stretch as much as you can! and hold stretches for at least 30 secs. If you're looking for specific stretches, check out the other posts 🙂

floor work wise, i find inspiration from dance clips and try to incorporate that into routines. If you like a certain type of music, say hip hop, try looking at some choreography of that online and pick out dance moves you like and fit it into a pole routine?

is the shoulderstand where you are lying on the floor resting on 1 shoulder? (just double checking hehe) I learnt how to do it from this video – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZKcK8GEFY_k

At first it was tricky to stay up but after a while you get used to it and can do all sorts of fancy tricks with it 😉 Hope that helps! I'm sure the others will have a lot more advice for you
