I thought a true grip and a cup grip were the same thing. Can someone please clarify for me? Thanks
-
A lot of people think theyre the same thing. Cup grip is like the grip you use for shoulder mounts…with hand open and the thumb down…and true grip is this convoluted dangerous grip where you literally just hold the pole. I guess like you would for climbing or the fireman spin…also called a “baseball grip” sometimes.

I mean its not dangerous 99% of the time, just as far as deadlifting goes im saying
-
You can find examples of these grips in our gallery Grips and Holds section https://www.studioveena.com/galleries

To answer the question yes you can deadlift without a TG or kicking…Blondbird is amazing and watching her you’ll see many different options to dead lifts 🙂

K I’m still a little mixed up, here is a vid that says true grip
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=53wFUQ_R568
and this vid says cup grip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7jx7j2JjQAY but watching from 1:01 it looks the same to me.Does anyone have any vid examples that show the difference?

I use cup and true interchangeably. I think most people do.
-
True and cup is the same for me and in the lessons here.
-
I also use true and cup interchangeably. I’ve heard people call it Chinese grip too, because it’s very common in Chinese pole. The grip that krazykitty described above i would call a split grip, just a regular old split grip.
-
Okay. Maybe im wrong. Now i can do a cup or “chinese” grip lift already but eill someone explain what a true grip is then when referring to a deadlift? I must be incorrect
-
But i can handspring in the “true grip” i described so surely it must be possible to deadlift it…although i tried today and failed
-
It is possible although i certainly can’t do it! I have seen Blondbird do it, but she is a beast. Pretty sure she has magical pole powers. Lol.
-
Okay i got a chance to see the blonde bird video. I will learn this true grip! I shall master all the grips! But back to the original discussion…Pole Rules, if you can do 3 pull ups you’re more than strong enough to hold an ayesha. So i def recommend you start with learning handspring. If twisted grip is not right for you, do cup grip but i strongly advise you learn that first. I started from literally nothing and got there really fast so if you take my advice you will get there soon too.
