That’s how I learned how to invert in my old days. Due to lack of time I attended mixed levels classes and always looked up to advanced students. Now it all behind me and faded but i remember how much they cheered for me!

Im on river stone floors for a long time. Do wear leg warmers and leggings often but got used to hard surface. When I go for classes in studio Im truly appreciating wood but anywhere else its usually polished cement. I never tried carpet around pole accept my yoga mat but soft carpet sounds like luxury

Dance stores have quiet a variety of Bloch shoes covering different parts of soles (like half-sole) or toes. I have two kinds heels open/ toes closed and half soles with toes open. Both are very comfy for spins, open toe is better for poling and closed toes are good for floor work especially when you need to drag your toes like going into shoulder rolls and open butterfly floor spins around the pole. I found high heels were difficult to use at first. In general as much as I love the heels but feeling the floor gives me a boost of confidence until Im familiar with the move

October 8, 2015 at 4:20 pm in reply to: what do you think about ankle weights?

I work with leg weights all the time
mine are 10lb per leg. I can adjust to a lighter by taking weights out of pockets.
So far I inverted raising its slowly to 5 per leg but I dont recommend to do it on a pole. I invert on rings and on pull-up bar where weight is distributed between two shoulders evenly. I can do it on a pole but there is no gain for inversion technique or strength wise and as Veena mentioned there is good chance to injure yourself.
You will gain much more from slow leg raises and control descend also pull-up bar l-sits. If you can do shoulder stands in those and control discend.
I also love to stretch in those but be very careful its easy to injure as well I wouldnt use more then 2lbs per leg to start

That is exactly why whoever watchers us dancing please smile and cheer…. We need this positive attitude and not just staring. Whenever I dance I always find those smiles in a crowd and even blow kisses sometimes. Its silly but all it is is a transfer of energy. Smile and it will come back to you 10 times more so…
The other day I was visiting a strippers club and I felt exactly the way these girls fill. Man look in a different way there. So they have to perform and hassle while on a stage and off the stage. It’s very cold environment. So I tried to smile and cheer yelling Nice! all the time and noticed that it helps everyone to fill more human.

September 26, 2015 at 2:52 pm in reply to: Can you recommend a callus remover?

    I wouldn’t remove them
They are cushions that protect your palms from blistering
Plus whatever is for removing contains high amount of salicylic acid or freezone that will strip your skin from callus layers and you will need to regrow the layer of skin that will be still vulnerable to contact with pole unless new calluses will develop.
Just use good hands moisturizer at night to keep them from being dry and brittle
    All polers have them.

Allyson my collarbone is sticking out too and wasn’t hurting myself on shoulder mount but on a reverse one from caterpillar to the point that I started to avoid it by all means. But not recently as I tried to do it with gripping aid. Its not that I was slippery there it just tells my brain where to have my placement and curl myself before I kiss the pole with my collarbone. Still it is a scary one for me

It strange mine came with such a long long laces that I can wrap around my waste???
I think you should ask the company to provide you with a longer laces.
If they are stiff to bend it could be a problem with inside/outside leg hang, cupid, python, where the grip is not only by the fabric. You need your legs to bend maximum at the knee for a proper form.

When you are new to the pole and gymnastics as well there will be a lot of challenges for you to meet. Especially with younger instructors. Also there is a certain level of anxiety and expectation to do everything what’s required of you. If the instructors are smart and want their clients coming back they always know what is reasonable to work on within a time frame.
Remember, not every challenge is your challenge at that particular time. Everybody is different.
You can try within your reasonable physical efforts but do not do anything to hurt yourself. Pay attention to your body. If it doesn’t do it say to yourself: Very well, not at this time. Let’s revisit it in a few weeks or month. Also there is a great advantage to be a member here because you can reevaluate it against your instructions in class and you will see how different or similar it should be. Veena’s educational and if I can say almost clinical experience for every move keeps you in best hands ever.
    Small steps are safer.

It takes time to discover things for yourself and find what you truly love.
I suggest write a blog. State things that are negative and positive, what brought you to the art of pole, what successes you already achieved,
List every move you learned and see for yourself if it an achievement for you.
List the goals you would love to achieve and think how much you want them.
Also, listen to the music and imagine in your mind how would you dance it on the pole.
If notice yourself thinking danceable moves then do it. My grandma used to say: You have to sleep on things before you make a decision. Meaning: it takes time to figure thing out.
Pole requires time and consistency, teaches you to be humble and appreciate your body. So listen to it and be good to yourself.

If you are able to find MAT specialist to attend in your area would probably the ideal best solution in terms of time and outcome for type of athletic trauma you have and how quickly you want to return to your usual performance.
Keep in mind acupuncture is a technique that will block the nerves pathway thru which you experienced feeling of pain in your area but healing will have take time on it’s own.
MAT sciences specialist has a knowledge of how to reactivate muscles and ligaments in your body to switch it to correct physical process of the movement of affected area even after one session. Usually after a day or two you are good to come back to your usual practice. No TB will be needed.
And if you compare the cost it’s most economical at the end.

August 14, 2015 at 5:40 pm in reply to: WHEN, WHY, and HOW did you start? commemt your pole journey?

I started my pole journey 18 months ago.
I came from ballroom and latin. Also do a lot of yoga. Always hated gym. I used to watch a lot of pole stars and I remember one time I asked my husband: ” Do you mind if I join a pole studio instead of gym?” He supported me on that. I moved fast due to being in a great shape but injured myself quiet quickly by overdoing and not having a proper instruction at the beginning. My injuries made me realize how important conditioning is and also seeking a proper instruction when learning. U-tube and star tricks are not reliable material for starters. So when I came to VS I realized this is the place to learn and share your progress. I stopped watching stars for a while.
And please Don’t take me wrong on this. Watching pole stars and big competitions was all very inspiring… at the beginning, but kind of faded for me. Now I just watch for technical part.
What I really enjoy watching is “real people”… all talented beautiful ladies whoever post their creativity here. And that what I find very inspiring because as it reflective on my learning and practice also seems to be more achievable and doable after I watch someone do it here and work on my staff. Or if i see also choreo tastefully done it encourages to work and create mine own.
Haven’t posted any routine yet but it’s coming… soon

    Yes
Aradia listed this one as a beginner must. Spiral into ballerina.
Im sceptical on how this is a beginner material as well but… some kids can do it from the first try.
It is a reverse grab, split grip from behind depends how stretched you are and how you catch the momentum, but slow motion requires to push away from the pole forward so that lower hand is your big help…. I wish i would’ve known then what I know now… I was doing this spin right before I started to invert. And because I was practising a lot my spiral with different variation along with inverts somehow I thought inversions affected my shoulder but all it was is this spin that was introduced too soon to me. That’s how I found this site and when I purchased my lessons and saw Veena’s order and explanation for these particular moves I completely stopped doing it until I healed and became stronger. It is a beautiful spin but you have to be strong and flexible in your shoulders.

Honestly I love all Veena’s outfits. The way she wears them and carries herself.
And in terms of age sensitive pole clothes are very generic. What matters is the size and quality of the material how it stretches. I usually stay away from shorts and tops that cut into my lines.
The last thing I need when trying to create beautiful lines and stay one with pole and floor is a sausage look. I do shop even at VS and Pink their sport line and make sure nothing is tight but clings to my skin safe enough for any action

July 17, 2015 at 7:01 pm in reply to: What are your inspirations to pole dance?

I trying to be more creative here.
As everything else that I do in life I adapted it into a form creative enjoyment. Yes it is a form of sport and good exercise and Im grateful for the opportunity to be a part of it but thinking on a deeper level it is a DANCE.
A form of a very creative movement that takes a certain place in your home, in a club, for some may be kids playground, in general in your life… it caries certain style, mood, energy, tells a story… emotions. Sometimes when I paint just take a break and dance and it is totally unrelated to my current thought or what i do but in fact it recharges me and inspires to paint better. And it is not a distress technique it actually benefits me like I would sink into a pose in yoga and have this transformational blissful moment.

    Absolutely
I actually leave some moves that I can’t do perfectly for 1-2 months then come back to them and get better results. But I never miss a day of yoga no matter how sick or wick Im.
Im actually thinking about doing Calisthenics for 2-3 months and then come back to new moves on pole

Sorry to hear about it Dino
may be you already did and if not ask your MD to do Doppler test to check the blood flow and tissue perfusion. Are you discussing it with only one orthopaedic surgeon? May be look for a second opinion on diagnosis and treatment before consider surgery because it’s not common for polers.

Now that you mention it I have to say I did inquire with a number of doctors including family physician and sports medicine doctor about use of acupuncture in my case and decided not to go ahead with it. I’m a pharmacist myself and it is very obvious for me which treatment or course is more appropriate, same with meds.
Acupuncture will block the pain via nerve passages and will reset pain receptors level which will be tolerable or non-existent for sometime. It doesn’t change the nature of your injury and doesn’t prevent it from reoccurring. In athletic sense the use of it is limited.
I chose MAT because the specialist was able to identify the root of the problem, corrected and secure it from reoccurring, also enhanced the muscle function at the same time. So it’s not a temporary fix and gets you back where you left. I was able to assess it as the most efficient and economical. Unless it is a bone fracture or rupture of a muscle, MAT is a deal for active people with sports injuries because of it anatomical and practical knowledge and application
As for diagnostic methodology I prefer verification by X-rays, ultrasound, lab tests and thorough med check by MD as a conformation on any pulse reading, iridology, palm reading, etc. Im trained in Homeopathy, Naturopathy and Nutrition as well. So Im familiar with methods, remedies and preventative medicine as a whole. Each case is different and we have to resort to our best options out there avoiding mistakes and high costs
