While Pilates will definitely help you build core strength, I personally feel that Gyrokinesis is a better compliment to pole dancing. One teacher (who is both Pilates and Gyrotonic certified) said that Pilates is like ballet, whereas Gyrotonic/Gyrokinesis is like modern dance. Gyrotonic/Gyrokinesis works multi-dimensionally and spirals away from the spine, utilising snaking or sinewy motions. Not sure where you are in the UK, but I know there are lots of instructors in London and right outside.

Hey, I’ve got a question: what do you teach to someone whose hands are so sweaty that she cannot keep a grip? I didn’t have any alcohol but did have Dry Hands (which I love when I use it but usually don’t have to) with me. Dry Hands didn’t work on her AT ALL and she didn’t have any grip whatsoever. We couldn’t do spins or strength holds. She wasn’t ready for inverts or real climbing. And we were on a pole/platform so we couldn’t do floor work. What we did do: pirouettes, flamingos (front/back), front hook variation spin (with lots of skin on the pole for friction!), pole sits with feet on the floor and backward handstands. Do you guys have any suggestions?

Holy crap! What the heck kind of class was that–Boot Camp Poling?????

I’m glad you’re back and I’m glad you’ve stopped taking that class. I’m sure it could have been appropriate for some people out there, but, geez–I don’t think you could PAY me enough to do that!

I’ve been drooling over the brass poles that they offer for ages! Glad to know that they’re a good company. Maybe one day I’ll be able to get one. Yes, make a vid so we can see your new baby!

PLEASE REST! A lot of us here at StudioVeena have gotten back/intercostal/shoulder injuries and can tell you that if you want to continue progressing safely, rest the injury! The consequences of "working through it" might sideline you for a lot longer than it takes to heal the original booboo. When I first started learning, I did tons of inverts when I wasn’t ready for them and ended up not being able to do anything for almost 7 months. It got so bad that sometimes deep breathing hurt. I know it’s frustrating (believe me, I know!), but maybe you can focus on transitions or floorwork for the time being. There’s another thread here called "What next?" that you might want to peek at–there’s a lot of important stuff that you could practice before going back to inverts.

I think I’m on the same page as Roxy: pole sits, climbs, releases ( x knee, prone, etc), headstands and handstands (both forward and reverse). With the reverse handstand you can practice a supported inverted crucifix without even going into an invert. Or how about floorwork?

Your Biology teacher should be taken out and beaten for what she said to you! What a retard!!
And your so-called "friend" what a moron!!! He should also be taken out and beaten!!

That is definitely a good dose of Irish justice!
And I agree 100%. I’m sorry, Natalie, that you’re facing all these issues. But you’re not alone even though a lot of your friends are gone for the summer–your virtual community is at hand. Sometimes I wish it were as simple as TV and Dr House will come limping in, call all the other doctors "idiots", make the proper diagnosis and treat you until you’re all better.

So Cutie, maybe we need to know a little more about how you feel about pole dancing. Do you enjoy the sexiness of it? the power and strength? the empowerment? the music? the liberation? the shoes? These things might help you find a name that tells your prospective clients what the studio is about. Or if you’ve already got a following, use you’re own name (as in Bobbi’s Pole Dance Studio). Or something that incorporates your surroundings like, Carribean Waves (not a good example but it just came off the top of my head). Or even something super silly like, BahamaMamas. Keep us updated!

I know it might sound contradictory but if you’re doing a seated forward bend, your lower back and core need to be strong enough to support you sitting upright on your sitting bones. And then the pelvis need to tilt correctly. And then the hamstrings need to lengthen! There’s a whole science to a forward bend. As a yoga instructor and a gyrotonic trainer, I see so many people with backs as rounded as a camel’s hump while they’re trying to reach forward into a seated forward bend. There’s not a lot of benefit in it that way. Try thinking of reaching your heart towards your toes to keep your spine lengthened. As for "bridge" or full backbend, if you’re never done it before and you’re over the age of 23, learn it from someone certified to teach it. There are a lot of things that people don’t think about when they perform this posture on their own: for example, there should be equal weight in the hands and feet, and ALWAYS turn your toes inward unless you’re an advanced practitioner (because inward rotation "opens" the sacrum whereas outward rotation "closes" it). In my personal experience, I have found that I get more out of my hamstrings in standing forward bends versus seated ones.

In Vegas, you can drop into a 1 hour class for $30. That’s pretty much across the board, from studios that have pole classes to actual pole dance studios. At the pole studio, there’s a rate for locals that’s $99 for one month of unlimited classes. They’ve got maybe 12 permanent poles (including 1 skinny). I teach at 1 studio that has 5 removable stainless poles and another that has 3 removable brass poles–none of them spin. Unfortunately, no one is offering a 6 week course where you see the same students in class and get to learn a progression (I’ve pleaded with the owners but to no avail…).

As far as I know, most group classes here consist of minimum warm-up, strength and conditioning exercises and then you learn tricks. I have recently decided to teach my classes slightly differently. I’m actually teaching a class that I would want to take: I choreograph maybe 5 counts of 8 that we work on on Monday, and then polish it up and "perform" it on Wednesday. After warm-up and conditioning, I teach the elements that appear in the routine (spins or transitions), and then teach the choreography. I think it’s much more fun for a beginner to piece together stuff into something tangible/workable. It seems to be working out fine and it helps me stay on course and teach clearly.

Awww I wish I could do ummm…. ANYTHING on a pole so I could do this https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_lol.gif . "The Way You Make Me Feel" is one of my fave song ever!!!

Charilee, you can do ANYTHING you want, with or without pole! There have been vids where dancers use chairs or the floor or the wall. If the music moves you, do the challenge!
