Jess, that was awesome! You gave such a fun, strong, mind-blowing performance! First off, I loved the use of the chair (yes, chair dancing terrifies me–I keep thinking the chair will kill me). Second, your combinations were unique and sooooo well done! I mean, I didn’t think a person could keep going like that. Brava!! It was a really artistic performance. Loved every second of it! You’ve got to perform MORE!

Thank you so much, Eva! I can’t wait to put up my pole. That’s really tough to have to pay so much for you to get your pole or extensions from the UK. Maybe you should think about becoming an xpole distributor in the CR! And, by the way, your English is perfect! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif
    Thanks again,

Your splits look good, so you should be able to try kicking one foot at a time and the other will follow.

That’s a very good point. If your splits are good, your guide leg (top leg) will be really close to the wall or pole or spotter anyway. Use the strength of your bottom leg/push-off leg to get your hips into position and then there’s only just a little more to go for your guide leg/top leg to touch whatever is behind you. I would highly encourage you NOT to "kick up", but instead, push off the floor with that bottom leg and try to find your balance instead of forcefully crashing into the wall or pole. As for the arch: that’s slightly more complicated, in my opinion. Some girls like to arch a lot to make a prettier line. I find that I have to arch a lot, because I’m so used to yoga-type handstands and I had a teacher scream at me to arch in order to get my sacrum to rest against the pole. This helped me (not the screaming but the advice!) because if I wanted to, say, grip the pole with my thighs and then sit up, I wouldn’t have been able to unless I arched and got my tailbone closer to the pole. Whatever you choose to do, just make sure you engage your abdominals like mad in order to keep your body safe.

Hey Razi! I just moved from Las Vegas–wish I could have met you earlier! Fawnia is still at her studio but Aradia (Tracy) has moved to a studio at the Hard Rock. Also, if you’re looking for incredible private instruction, I would highly recommend Trixie Lovett. She’s phenomenal and one of my favorite people on earth. And she’s just outside Henderson. Shoot me an email if you want more info or want to discuss poling around Vegas. Welcome to poling and to the SV site. You’ll love it here!

I’ve heard many times before that one should NEVER go upside down while on the rag. Never, ever. It causes problems, apparently. I heard this reading Yoga books, and yet I never heard it in Yoga class.

According to Yoga philosophy, the natural downward force in one’s body is called apana. Apana aids in digestion, elimination, and childbirth (which is why having women labor and deliver laying on their backs is so un-helpful). Yoga instructors traditionally ask the class if there are any women "on her moon" before inversions and usually give the student(s) the option to refrain from going upside down. If the student is a basic beginner, it’s often a good idea for her to skip inversions at this time because there might be light-headedness or nausea that’s related to one’s period. Going upside down might result in a preventable injury. If a student is more experienced, this usually isn’t an issue. If you are past the first few days of your period, most Yoga teachers will tell you it’s fine for you to invert. There are some instructors who believe that the "toxins" that are naturally eliminated from the uterus during menstruation should not be allowed to return to, or pool in, the uterus. So some teachers will warn you not in invert due to safety and liability reasons, and others due to subtle energy reasons. And some won’t even mention it in class due to either her own embarrassment or her not wanting to embarrass the student. In my opinion, it’s really up to the individual. Listen to your body whether in Yoga or poling.

While I mostly agree with the whole "WTF was she inverting when she knew she wasn’t strong enough" train of thought, I would like to add that for me, it’s impossible to monitor every single student in a class where there’s more than 5 (more or less–I know more experienced instructors can manage lots). I have made speeches about "please do not attempt new tricks unless I’m RIGHT THERE SPOTTING YOU", and inevitably, some girl will fly up there and try something anyway. Usually it’s a young girl, but sometimes not. Perhaps she did the invert, slid down, and the teacher didn’t understand the extent of her injury? Maybe the teacher even asked if she was ok, and her immediate response was "yes" (I know it sounds prejudiced, but as a Chinese woman, you kind of get brainwashed into giving the response you know someone wants to hear), but then started feeling the pain later? I’m curious to know if an ambulance was called or did she walk out on her own. Nowadays, there seem to be a lot more open/mixed level classes rather than beginner/intermediate/advanced ones. There’s always going to be injuries. And yes, even though a student may be required to sign a waiver, she can still sue–they’re not binding contracts. I think it’s more for the student to realise that what she is about to do CAN lead to injuries (same as yoga or martial arts, etc). Having said all that, maybe this news was a good (barring the injured woman, of course) thing; maybe now people can see that poling is some serious work!
