Hi Polewalker! I hope your feeling better now! I really do not suggest grabbing the foot of the hooked leg, especially when you are first learning a move requiring a knee pit grip. I've had emails from members who have been taught to grab the foot of the hooked leg and have injured their knee!!!! The hamstring and calf should be doing the work by themselves if you are not strong enough to hold the move without grabbing the foot then you're not ready for it yet.
Even without grabbing the foot you may still find some bruising and soreness though. Also I suggest trying a new move no more than 10 times to help prevent bruising and injury. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_flower.gif

When you say layback, are you talking about a Plank or Cross ankle release?

If you have sweaty hands then all poles will give you problems from time to time. Try using a grip aid to formulated to keep hands dry. Focus on what skin type you have and your climate when decide on pole finish. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_flower.gif

That was in my old space, it’s an old tg xpole top loading, it was about 14 ft tall!!!!

I should add that I have the old brass finish from xpole, I have not tried the new brass finish…but I have used other brass and still have issues in cold weather.

I have all of the finishes you’ve listed. If you live where it’s cool or cold often I would stay away from the brass. My tg is great in all weather. I can only use my brass xpole in the summer when I’m very hot and sweaty.

I think this is really common with anything! We over think or suddenly worry about injury or looking silly. Once we get a negative thought in our heads about something its hard for some people to stop thinking about it, your totally not alone!
You may want to try visualizing yourself perfectly performing the moves that cause fear! Do this as often as you can….. close your eyes and picture yourself doing the move or moves perfectly… see yourself in the room you practice in…. feel how happy you are with yourself….hear everyone clapping for you! If you start to go down the path of worry/fear, stop and start over, seeing yourself doing the move with ease. Pole is just as much mental as physical.

Most of the stretches suggested here are in the lessons for those who are interested. It’s always possible to increase your flexibility at any age! Have you tried using the stretching lessons here they’re meant for all levels! I’m not a natural back bender and didn’t start working on my back until I was 33.

However pregnancy isn’t the time to work on improving flexibility, because if the hormon “relaxin”. You will already have more flexi ness then before pregnancy so you could over stretch! It’s totally fine to stretch though, just avoid really going crazy with it and be gentile 🙂

I rent at the moment, and have put up many xpoles in other homes we've rented with no issues. As long as your ceiling isn't old an rickety or rotted and you follow the instructions to place the pole directly under the center of the stud, and tighten the pole properly it should be fine. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_flower.gif

Ouch! It's probably fine just sore from over doing it. But if it doesn't improve soon see a doctor.
It's important to remember that spins are very hard on the wrist, elbows and shoulders, and most spins are not appropriate for new dancers. I'm not sure if your taking lessons here or elsewhere but I would suggest working on moves that build strength first, then move on to spins.

To help avoid unnecessary issues with Diastatsis (abdominal separation) don't do heavy ab work like crunches or things that focus on the rectus abdominis (6 pack)
A lot of abdominal exercises can be modified and done against a wall. If you have the lessons you can do the Switch but standing against a wall instead of laying down. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif

One thing you should know, do not do any exercises that require you to lay on your back after the 1st trimester. Doing so will reduce blood flow to the baby.
