I am 100% in love with Michelle L'Amour. Her show's SPECTACULAR.

Karol's most recent vid–the peacock/booty shake one–is so fun and cheeky (pun in tended), I love love love love love it.

My booty does.not.want.to.shake.  I jokingly refer to my ass as "audit ass" because from the way my muscles refuse to relax you'd think the IRS were after me lol. I work on it, but it frustrates me. I work on it again, it frustrates me.

I figure if a teeny tiny booty like Karol's can get to shakin' so fabulously, mine certainly oughta! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_surprised.gif

"when I just move the way I feel like moving."

THIS ^ is the key! Floorwork adds to the expression of a song!!!

I record almost every session I have on the pole–in its entirety–and I wholeheartedly agree that it's the best way to improve your form, if for no other reason than it makes you more cognizant of what you're body's doing at every moment.

Sure, it takes being able to get past some insecurities, but it's well worth it, and as you see yourself progress odds are that you'll start being more generous toward your body and your dancing, because you'll start to see yourself for who you really are–a DANCER. I guarantee you that even women who have the most "perfect" bodies can likely run down a laundry list of perceived flaws.

Elbow grip aysha, tipped a little *too* far back before my grip was secure and went straight backward. At least I remembered to let go with my bottom hand or I would have probably dislocated my shoulder. It put a scare in me, that's for sure, but I've gotten over it.

12 ft pole with hardwood pad underneath as others have suggested. I cannot, cannot, cannot dance on carpet. OMG, the rug burns!!

I love floorwork. LOVE LOVE LOVE it. But when I first started I didn't do much at all. I was self-conscious and not very flexible. Well, I'm still not as flexible as I'd like to be, but the self-consciousness is gone, lol.

My suggestion is to do nothing but floorwork for 2-4 songs at least a couple of times a week. When you're not going to be up on the pole at all you'll quickly find interesting things to do on the floor. Experiment with timing, slow, slow, quickquick slow, etc. Pay close attention to how the floor feels underneath you, how your weight pulls you into or out of a move, how adjusting your weight/center of gravity affects that move's feel and appearance.

It gets less awkward the more you do it–just like pole!!  🙂

When you say it's a security thing, is it because you don't trust your grip? when I first starting doing the CAR, I used to go into it from a wrist seat, already partially in position–just cross legs and lower my body the rest of the way back. It really seemed to lock in my grip.

Oh, I miss not being able to edit, lol.

Rollout, or at least what I refer to as a rollout, short for basic invert rollout…where you tuck your head as you slide down the pole in inverted position and just roll your body down, sorta makes a spiral motion around the pole..

Gemini to hip hold…you've got an outside leg knee grip, back is arched, all that jazz. Bring your inside leg around the other side of the pole and down, using that motion to lock your hip hold into place, then release the knee pit grip and bring the other leg down as well, into whatever hip hold position you prefer.

I forgot–you can also grab back above your leg and sit up from a gemini into a pole sit if you don't want to leave the pole but also don't want to do any additional inverted stuff from it.

Can also take it into butterfly/extended butterfly, which lends itself beautifully to transition into flatline scorpio.

I like to do an inverted V (chopper, helicopter, it has so many names, lol) into gemini. Can you do a gemini scorpio leg switch? That will naturally slide you down the pole a bit, at least in my experience, and then you can either do a rollout or turn your body so your stomach's against the pole and do an inverted crucifix press. You can also skip the leg switch and go straight from gemini into inverted crucifix and press down.

Other ideas, if you have these moves: gemini to hip hold (I like to do the tuck, then "drop" (it's not really a drop, more like a slide) into a scorpio. I think it's pretty and can look really dramatic when timed well.

Some fluidity is innate, but a lot of it comes with just dancing and dancing and dancing and dancing some more, not doing tricks, just dancing. Put on some music that you LOVE and dance to it. Do a fast song (I don't do enough of these but I'm getting better about it), a slow song, something with rise/fall to it.

If you don't already, I'd highly recommend recording yourself. You'll be able to see your lines, how your hair flicks look, etc. I record everything, and though some of it is cringe-worthy, I always learn something from watching myself!

It just takes time. Floorwork is one of my favorite things to do when I'm kinda feeling "meh" about dancing. It's a great warmup and it makes me feel sexy and slinky, no matter what. And even if I do the same stuff, I enjoy it nonetheless. The more floorwork you do, the more you'll begin to incorporate new moves–and to make up new moves. There are so many times now that a move just happens, and I love those because they usually end up looking great. They come from really feeling the music.
