I have been on a real floorwork kick lately–posted a vid last week and also one the week before, if you take a peek you'll see that I definitely have my favorite combinations. Since they all have different names from studio to studio… and some things don't really even have names… I can't really click off the combos. Sorry!
Watch Dangerous's videos, I think she does beautiful floorwork. So does Alethea Austin (oh my). And there's a dancer who's on youtube as RhiannanNichole who, IMO, is positively mesmerizing on the floor. Check her out for inspiration!

MemberAugust 6, 2011 at 12:50 pm in reply to: What’s the Secret to the Cross Ankle Release?Well, technically what most people (including me) refer to as CAR is a cross leg release. There is a cross ankle release in which the pole is held at the base of the calves, right by the ankles. I've also heard that one referred to as a cross foot release.
I do my cross leg release with the pole at about mid-thigh because I like to arch and go into a bridge, or just to arch my back and push my hips up to make a prettier line. If the pole is too high up on my thigh, I don't have the mobility that I want.
-
Actually, as I think about it, it's more of a pull than a push. Invert, leave top hand in place, use your back/core muscles to arch your back enough to get that inside shoulder in front of the pole, place bottom hand, and you're pretty much there.
You can also go into an invert, leave top hand, go ahead and place bottom hand into position, then push out into butterfly–but I think that requires a little knowledge of where you're going and what your body needs to do, so maybe it's Phase II, lol.
-
I think I understand–you're supposed go into crucifix, leave your top hand in place, drop your bottom hand into the split grip, then release the back let into butterfly (or whatever other move), right?
Can you get a video of what's happening? To me, it sounds like you're not pushing away from the pole at all. When you do a crucifix your body naturally swings away a bit, but if you really think about it, you probably do tuck that inside shoulder as it swings, to give you better clearance. If you leave your top hand in place, you need to push back a hair so your inside shoulder and arm can come around and regrip.
Just a theory. 🙂

As Veena and tiggertail mention–more on the leg, not on the knee. Mine is on my shin, at quite an angle. Definitely, definitely push your hips forward. It'll cause you to spin backward slightly which can be scary, but it'll also equalize the pressure on your legs and lock in the grip. All of that adds up to far less pain.
Maybe post a video of yours to show where you're placing your leg on the pole, etc–you'll get all sorts of helpful suggestions! 🙂

Yay, blog talk!
Mine is http://ginadances.wordpress.com/ …. and I suddenly realized I have not updated it in far too long. Gotta get on that!
-
Mine is more on my shin than on my kneecap–I think that's a good way to hurt your knee. I'd say the pole hits about 4 inches below my kneecap, at a pretty sharp angle so it's on the big muscle that goes over the shin…. your mileage may vary, lol
-
Once Karol helped me find my own l'il sweet spot it didn't hurt nearly as much. Mind you, it doesn't feel *great* but it's not almost unbearable like it was when I tried it before.
One thing that I noticed, at least for my own body conformation: my knees need to be a fair bit further apart on the pole than I'd originally placed them.
-
For me, the two major keys were getting the bottom leg into the right position to be able to push against the pole, and getting my hips forward forward forward. This will cause you to spin backward a little bit, but it'll lock the grip in and distribute your weight much more evenly over both contact points.
-
I pole dance for myself… here's something I've noticed. My learning of new tricks is met with support, interest to the point that he's excited for my accomplishments, etc. — he doesn't necessarily want to watch me do those things.
BUT–when I dance for him, and I mean get down with my pole dancing bad self and dance for my man? He's riveted. Mesmerized. Lustfully appreciative, lol.
All that said, post videos here and you'll have a whole host of peeps to dance for! 🙂

Something has changed in my technique/form for chopperYou might have strained it a bit–my advice is to lay off it completely for a week or two and see how it feels. When I strained an intercostal my doc told me they're one of the hardest muscles to get completely healed, because we use them for almost every movement we do.
Hope you feel better soon!

I am 100% in love with Michelle L'Amour. Her show's SPECTACULAR.
Karol's most recent vid–the peacock/booty shake one–is so fun and cheeky (pun in tended), I love love love love love it.
My booty does.not.want.to.shake. I jokingly refer to my ass as "audit ass" because from the way my muscles refuse to relax you'd think the IRS were after me lol. I work on it, but it frustrates me. I work on it again, it frustrates me.
I figure if a teeny tiny booty like Karol's can get to shakin' so fabulously, mine certainly oughta! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_surprised.gif

OMG, Charley, that was hysterical! Booty popping Barbie!! I will never again feel bad about my below-average booty popping skills…. I've got it goin' on way more than Barbie, lol.

"when I just move the way I feel like moving."
THIS ^ is the key! Floorwork adds to the expression of a song!!!

I record almost every session I have on the pole–in its entirety–and I wholeheartedly agree that it's the best way to improve your form, if for no other reason than it makes you more cognizant of what you're body's doing at every moment.
Sure, it takes being able to get past some insecurities, but it's well worth it, and as you see yourself progress odds are that you'll start being more generous toward your body and your dancing, because you'll start to see yourself for who you really are–a DANCER. I guarantee you that even women who have the most "perfect" bodies can likely run down a laundry list of perceived flaws.

At least I remembered to let go with my bottom hand or I would have probably dislocated my shoulder. It put a scare in me, that's for sure, but I've gotten over it.

12 ft pole with hardwood pad underneath as others have suggested. I cannot, cannot, cannot dance on carpet. OMG, the rug burns!!
-
I love floorwork. LOVE LOVE LOVE it. But when I first started I didn't do much at all. I was self-conscious and not very flexible. Well, I'm still not as flexible as I'd like to be, but the self-consciousness is gone, lol.
My suggestion is to do nothing but floorwork for 2-4 songs at least a couple of times a week. When you're not going to be up on the pole at all you'll quickly find interesting things to do on the floor. Experiment with timing, slow, slow, quickquick slow, etc. Pay close attention to how the floor feels underneath you, how your weight pulls you into or out of a move, how adjusting your weight/center of gravity affects that move's feel and appearance.
It gets less awkward the more you do it–just like pole!! 🙂
-
A resounding DITTO to Amy's post. Dance to them now now now!!!!
-
When you say it's a security thing, is it because you don't trust your grip? when I first starting doing the CAR, I used to go into it from a wrist seat, already partially in position–just cross legs and lower my body the rest of the way back. It really seemed to lock in my grip.
-
Oh, I miss not being able to edit, lol.
Rollout, or at least what I refer to as a rollout, short for basic invert rollout…where you tuck your head as you slide down the pole in inverted position and just roll your body down, sorta makes a spiral motion around the pole..
