jayjay, I think I know what you mean. My head barely touches the floor in an elbow stand, but not weight is on it. BUT when I wrap my legs in CAR position, my body sinks into it by about 1/2" inch. This 1/2" brings my head onto the floor and I have to tuck my chin before I lift myself up to prevent my head from getting in the way. Is this what you mean?

If it is, I find that tucking my chin in BEFORE I put my weight onto my legs helps get me head out of the way.

I’m chinese and when I first told my mom that I"m pole dancing, her reaction was "But, that’s for men!!!! You’ll get big ugly shoulders". So i guess "authentic" pole dance can mean Chinese pole to some, it really depends on how you veiw the sport. I’ve shown my moves to my mom to show her that women can dance on the pole too, and she thinks the moves are very similar to traditional pole (shoulder mounts, armpit grips).

Honestly, to classify any form of pole as "authentic" is silly. It’s like saying rock is not "authentic" music because it’s not a Gregorian chant. Things change, grow, mutate and evolve all the time.

I’ve been trying this and it leaves a bruise right at the lowest/floating ribs. I start off with the pole at the fleshy indentation between my ribs and hip but I’m very short (4’10") so there it’s a tight fit so when I reach around with my hand, the area compresses and the pole hits the bottom rib from the bottom up…does that make sense? I can hold the move but it not secure, it hurts and it doesn’t look good. I feel like if I the area between my ribs and hip bones were just, oh I don’t know, maybe 1" longer, I will be able to wrap my torso around the pole without it pressing against my ribs or hips.

I used to go to a studio that had 1.5" poles and I found most moves like pretzel and flat line scorpio to be much easy on my body. I pretty sure I can do the allegra on those poles, no problem. I just have to find a way to work around the thicker poles…or find myself a 1.5" pole!

So inspiring! More performances like this by men and women of her caliber and the general public might start considering pole dance a real sport and accept it in the Olympics!

"Also remember with the SM roll to flip your feet towards the resting shoulder."
Do you mean when getting into the BM?

As for grip, I use the double cup as well as the princess grip to SM. For both of them, I put my shoulder side hand on top. Is that okay?

Edit: I forgot to add, I just did the shoulder dismount from veena’s video and I have no problem DISMOUNTING with my arms switched…probably becuase I"m approaching this as a new move. But when I try to mount right back up after I dismount, I can;t do it and have to switch my hands. The body is a programmable machine ain’t it.

January 27, 2010 at 10:22 pm in reply to: Eczema

My eczema came back recently. I thought I got rid of it when I grew up, I guess I was wrong. I have bad patches on my shoudler and scalp and it causes bald patches, mostly becuase I have horrible control and I scratched it. I have a hydrocortisone lotion from the doctor, but honestly, I dont; see any improvement. My skin is also very dry with patches all over.

I’ve been using a natural bees wax cream for my body. It’s made from wax from a local apiary. This wax based cream functions more as a barrier, rather than a moisterizer though. So it’s protects but doesn;t cure the dryness.

This happens on my TG often too. I’m pretty sure it’s condesation becuase it usually happens when the relative humididty is above 80%. Most of the time I can’t see the condensation, but I can feel it. BUT if I look really really carefully, I can see the condensation "smearing" around the pole. Espeically if the pole is cold and my hands are warm.

Problem is I can’t put on the dehumidifyer in the winter becuase my legs are very very dry and it’s basically a choice between slippy hands or no leg grip.

Congrats! I tried it from SM the other day and Sassa’s description of "careening off the pole" is exactly what happened. I can’t get into BM from the straight edge because I can only straight edge breifly from a handspring (split grip) and my hands are in the way. I can;t use forarm grip at all, the onyl time I’ve fallen badly was from forearm grip so I think I have a mental block here. I caterpillar with elbow grip and I can elbow grip aysha. Do you think I can brass monkey using elbow grip? Or will my body be too far fromthe pole?

Veena, can you do a lesson video for the allegra?
My attempts at trying it left a big bruise on my ribs and I still didn’t stay up in position. It’s almost as if I can’t arch my back enough to grab the pole behind my knee and when I do, it hurts. I must be doing something wrong.

January 15, 2010 at 6:37 pm in reply to: Shoulder Mount unsafe???

Terp, I second what was already said about the studio labelling them unsafe because THEY don’t know how to teach it probably and is worried about lawsuits and what not. And I think it makes matter worse because the students will still try them, except instead of trying them at the studio with a spotter, they will try them alone at home.

At the studio I use to belong to, one instructor was great and would help use with moves we saw online. If she was unfamiliar with it, she practiced until she was and we will all improve on it together.

On ther hadn there was an instructor that was very strict about what was allowed to be done in her class. There was a list she taught and she will tell you it is wrong if you did a variation taught by another instructor. She also didn’t expand upon her list with new moves. Instead of adding the moves to her lessons, she will just claim they were " too advanced" and therefore won’t be taught. As a result a scorpio(they called it something else at the studio) was taught but a gemini was "too advanced"…funny because I learned the gemini first.

I think it happend becuase "sensual fitness" exploded like a fad and business minded people are rushing to make a buck off or two off of it. As a result, many studios were opened by owners who dont; knwo much about the sport. Also, some of these studios only require girls to take a course (costly ofcourse) to be an instructor. Some of these instructors can only do what they teach. This is one of the reasons I left the studio. There was only 2 instructors there who truly know what they were doing.

Thank for explaining how to get into it from CAR! The only way I got into brass monkey before was kicking from the ground. It doesn’t look graceful at all and I never used it to a routine. Sliding down from the CAR is so much easier and prettier!

Aerial silk in only 9′? Wow, that’s harder than pole with 7′.

Can we touch our hands to the ground for handstands? Or it is completely aerial?

Owwie on the toe, honey rose. be careful!

I guess I should be grateful that my pole at least is not in a cold garage. Canadian winter will render the pole useless!

Does anyone have any tips on how to practice a reverse grab in cramped quarters? I can’t seem to do the move properly unless my body is flung pretty far out or else my hands slip and I’m on the ground in half a rotation. I’ve been trying to practice it wih my knees bent, but it just doesn’t give me enough momentum.

Ditto to everything already said. But I want to add that if you are determined to keep trying at those 3 moves, here are some hints.

The knee hold is one of my personal favorites! The knee hold is easier once you let your body go horizontal, and push those hips forward, The hips being forward and leaning away from the pole will give you the counter weight needed to pull against the top knee creating a lock. But be sure that the grip under your top knee is secure and the bottom leg is properly positioned. For me, I know when bottom leg is in a bad position because it hurts like a bitch when it’s wrong…but that might be because I’ve desensitized the correct area.

With the shoulder mount, try out difference grips. I find the princess grip much easier than the double cup. Try it from sitting on the floor first and remember the mats. This one is scary at first. MAKE SURE YOUR POLE IS WARM!!! And wear a tank top. Try learning this on a good grip day. On bad grip days just do the prep (prances?).

The teddy, I can only do from standing but not from a climb, not sure how much I can help. Wear a bra or pull up your shirt. I find if you move your hips to the front of the pole as much as possible it’s easier to stick and some of your weight is held up by her side instead of just your underarm. This is the reason I think I can’t stick it from a climb, I can;t get my hips in front.

    I hope this helps.

Here’s my first ever studio veena challenge submission. The quality isn’t great but all I have is a crappy webcam that came with my net book. Still, I hope you like it.

December 21, 2009 at 7:00 am in reply to: Chronic Rib Pain

Jill, I still occasionally get this pain and I’ve been dancing for a while. I think it usually happens when I get lazy and flip (for a lack of better word) out of an invert instead of lowering myself down with proper control. I usually invert with my left side next to the pole, but I’ve been practicing the other side lately to balance my body out and I’m getting the same pains. I know I’m strong enough so I think for me, right now, the problem is body positioning since i"m so used to inverting on the other side. I wish I had practiced inverting on the weak side earlier, I feel so lopsided.

I hope you feel better soon. And make sure you are positioning yourself correctly and don’t drop or flip out of it.

December 17, 2009 at 10:34 pm in reply to: Practice Questions

Okay, I know this thread is old, but I can’t help but add my two cent. Maybe with a little luck, it’ll even revive the thread.

    (1) How long do you practice?
1-1.5hrs, depends on whether I’m having a a good pole day or not. On a good day, I have to force myself to get off the pole. On a really bad day, I spend the last 15 mins cursing at the pole.

    (2) How often do you practice?
4-5 days a week. I would love to pole everyday, though.

    (3) Do you just freestyle or do you have a plan of action?
I keep a pole journal (pole log, whatever you want to call it) and I take notes on how things are progressing and what i want to work on next practice. My practices are still pretty unstructured though. The only constants are the warm up and stretching.

    (4) Do you stretch before, after or before & after practicing?
I do a few simple dynamic stretches durign my warmup, but I do the bulk of my stretching AFTER my pole work when my muscles are nice and warm. During my stretches, I let my chinchilla and pet rat (yes, I only have one rattie left, sniff) out to play. They like to climb on me like a jungle gym and it forces me to hold my stretches longer to prevent throwing them off. But it tickles.

    (5) Do you incorporate any strength training & conditioning exercises into your practices?
Just squats. I don’t have much of an ass, so I’m trying to build some glutes. Anyone willing to spare some?

    (6) Do you self-teach, take classes, or both?
I took classes for about a year, but I’m self teaching now.
