Have you thought about wearing gloves? I have super sweaty hands too and so I bought a pair of Mighty Grip gloves. I use them on the days my hands are really sweaty, I’m learning new moves, or the poles are really slick. They really help me stick better and I don’t have to wipe my hands or the pole every 5 seconds.

MemberSeptember 23, 2010 at 3:31 pm in reply to: Hubby vs Poling. Need Some Advice. So I took two videos yesterday during practice at my studio. I brought them home, threw them on our big screen, and made my hubby sit down and watch. "I had no idea that’s what you were doing. It’s more like gymnastics. That’s amazing!" He was really excited about me poling after seeing that. (He even said his favorite move was me climbing up and doing a pole sit. He said that he had no idea I had that much strength.) https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif So yeah, I think showing him what’s been taking up my time really helped and now he seems to understand it better.

I learned on static, and am still on static at the moment. Hoping to start spinny classes here soon! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif

Need Some Advice.I’m so glad things worked out https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif Having your husband come support you if you perform in October is a great idea. Even if you don’t perform it would be great for him to see you get excited about watching your peers perform. I hope the studio posts info about the October performance (recital?). I wanted to come watch the one in July but I couldn’t.
Me too. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif I don’t think a date has been set yet for the performance. If you want, when they do announce what day I’ll let you know.

I’ve been poling since late June of this year. I’ve noticed with my fireman, which I’m comfortable with, I no longer death grip. I just get frustrated when trying to do a hook spin and the rest of my body is good to go, but my hands are just clinging. Lol.

MemberSeptember 17, 2010 at 2:39 pm in reply to: Hubby vs Poling. Need Some Advice. He’s been gone on a business trip the past few days and came home last night. I sat him down and we talked about it. He did, finally, admit he’s jealous of the pole classes. He said that this is the first time we’ve ever had separate activities and that scares him. He’s afraid that I’ll decide I like my pole friends and pole dancing better than spending time with him. I reassured him that wasn’t true, but that I needed my pole friends and a hobby. I also pointed out that I have taken up playing a card game he likes and that we’ve joined a couple organizations/clubs around the area together, in order to have "couple activities". I reminded him that when we got married we both agreed that it was important to have two portions to our marriage: an us and individuals. It’s important for me to have something and do something for just me. I also reminded him that he once told me that I was self sacrificing to the point that it was dangerous and that I needed to do things more for me and less for other people. I think that was the winning statement of the night, because it really seemed to sink in that he was doing what other people have done with me in the past and just take, take, take. I told him I love him, respect him, and care for him but I’m not budging on my Tuesday night class. I can deal with not going Mondays, especially since I found an equivalent on Thursday during the day; but I am GOING on Tuesday nights.
He said that was fine and agreed that I was being more than fair and that he was being a selfish 5 year old. He seemed to be better after our talk and even asked about the class I took Wednesday.
I’m hoping "the talk" got my point across and that this won’t be an issue again. My studio has a performance coming up in October. I’m hoping to get in on a routine so that he can come and watch and see what I’m learning and doing. I think that will make a big difference. If I can’t get in on a routine, then I am going to bring my camera one day and see about taping one of the mini-routines we do. I really think if he can see what I’m doing, then he’ll being to understand it more.
Thanks again for all the replies. You guys are the best!

I think the thing with my husband is, we’ve never had separate activities. He was my dance partner when we did ballroom. Before moving we did martial arts together. I think he feels left out and because he can’t see what I’m doing he doesn’t understand. I honestly agree with most of you about getting a pole. I think I’m going to look into that more heavily and see what I can do about getting one sooner.

I forgot to mention Jenny as well. She’s a good instructor. She puts together some tough routines and move sets, but I always learn a lot when I take one of her classes. I’m also really sore the next day, but it’s all good. You can’t really go wrong with anyone at Fawnia’s studio.

I do currently keep a regular schedule which I post up on our dry erase board in the kitchen, so he’s not blind sided. He’s just not happy with me going to evening classes period. I tried to convince him to do a co-ed pole class with me, but he didn’t go for that at all. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif

Yay Fawnia! I took like 5 classes from her before my preggy tummy got too big. I’ll be making the 2 hour drive for her classes again starting in December. I’m actually reluctant to progress beyond lvl 2 at her studio because I might have to take classes from another instructor if I do. She was always teaching the lvl one and two classes at the times I could be there. I’m sure the other instructors at her studio are stellar but she just had such a warm comfortable vibe.
And yowza, I gotta say she has such a rockin bod. That’s cool that she wants to start a family https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif
The other instructors are amazing as well! Personally, aside from Fawnia I love love love Trixie and would recommend taking her classes as well. She is just as amazing and hilarious as all get-out!

I’m actually taking classes at Fawnia’s studio here in Vegas and I can attest to the fact that she is sooo sweet and encouraging. She’s a great instructor and just a great person in general!

JThat’s AWESOME if you have the space….however I don’t, but that doesn’t stop me from working on moves/tricks/inverts etc. I may not be able to do big spins, but at least I can do something! LOL I have had my pole with me on trips staying in hotels where I had maybe 2 feet from the bed and dresser/desk, I still practiced moves and even a few spins kicking my legs above the bed ha ha.
That’s what I call dedication.

Thanks so much for the input. I think any place I put it will require a little rearranging furniture wise. It’s good to know what I’m looking at, though. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif

I pole for an hour Monday, Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday. (I also do lap dance class on Friday as well. Good workout, surprisingly.) I’m thinking about adding another pole class in on Wednesdays if I can swing it as well. If I do that I’m adding in toning ballet- which is amazing for stretching and toning the abs. Whenever I’m not at the studio, I try to stretch and do crunches. I sometimes run when I get the penchant.

MemberSeptember 10, 2010 at 8:39 pm in reply to: What do you do to prevent injury or heal?I gave up on trying to stop bruising, lol. I wear them proudly now. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif
As for preventing injury, I find that showing up about 10-15 minutes before class and warming up on my own really helped. I also try to stretch out more when I get back home. I tend to push myself really hard and tend to practice the same moves over and over if I feel like they aren’t up to par, which often leaves me with a tad of tendonitis in my wrists and sore muscles. If I’m in a lot of pain, I ice it for awhile and convince my lovely husband to help me rub that muscle down.

Oh yes! I get achy! Lol. Between poling and my career as a freelance writer, my hands/wrists definitely pick up some wear and tear. I find just taking a couple 5 minute breaks during the day and stretching my wrists really helps. I also like to get to class about 10 minutes early, so I can warm up wrists and fingers on my own. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif

MemberSeptember 10, 2010 at 8:29 pm in reply to: What makes us unique as individuals in our pole dancingAwesome article! I can’t speak on pole dancing but as a dancer in general, I was always flattered when I saw another couple or dancer using one of my partner and I’s moves or incorporating our style. Dancers should take "copying" as a measure of their dancing not as a slap in the face.

Luckily no major accidents as of yet. (Keeping my fingers crossed that it stays that way, lol.) The only injuries I’ve had have been what I feel are beginner related. When I first started I would constantly forget to roll my shoulders down and back, would be so sore for days afterwards. Once I figured out/remembered to keep the shoulders back- no problem. I also had a problem of jumping at the pole and would therefore get tons of bruises on the back of my ankle doing the fireman and ankle spin. I banged the back of my ankle so bad one time that I couldn’t walk on it the rest of the day. The only other issue I’ve had is tendonitis in my wrist, and that was because I tried to push myself too hard too fast and didn’t adequately warm up/warm down my wrist. Out of every pain I’ve had since starting, the tendonitis was by far the worst. It hurt for 3 weeks straight and made gripping and even lifting difficult.

Awesome! Vegas is definitely a fun place to live. If you are looking at areas to live, Henderson and Summerlin are two of the more popular areas to live. We live in the Southern/South West portion of the city and it is a nice area, lots of development going on! As long as you avoid living too close to The Strip, you’ll be okay. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif
