MemberOctober 25, 2010 at 4:35 pm in reply to: Body position in cartwheel vs split grip ayeshaWhen I learnt the split grip aysha from invert, I tried that froggy method for months on end and never got on with it at all. I will try to describe what I do, but it probably won’t make much sense.
I go up into my invert as I would for butterfly, keeping my hands in that position, but having my legs like an inverted crucifix. Then, rather than bringing my knees down with my legs bent, I bring my feet down with my legs straight, holding on with my ankles/feet sort of. By bringing it down holding on with the ankles and keeping my legs straight, my bum naturally falls away and backwards from the pole so my body is in that further away position. When I tried to do the froggy thing I never got my body far enough away from the pole and could never take my feet off. Once you get the feet far enough down, you can then take them off one either side of the pole and lower them into the aysha shape.
God I hope that makes sense – it’s really hard to describe something isn’t it when you can’t show somebody what you mean. Maybe think of yourself as a triangle shape with the pole being the bottom of the triangle and your bum being the pointy bit https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_lol.gif https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_question.gif

MemberOctober 11, 2010 at 8:34 am in reply to: Any advice for the basic aerial invert?! I’m so frustrated! With the aerial invert, when I first started learning it, I started in a pole sit, got my arms in position (making sure they were bent rather than straight so I wasn’t just hanging from them), then bring my body round the front of the pole, keeping the arms bent. Then bring the knees up to the chest and roll your body over so you are inverted. I used to use one of my feet to push off the pole slightly when I first started trying to do it so that it gave me that push off I needed to get the feeling of the invert.
Don’t compare yourself to others in the class though, there are moves which we can get and moves which we can’t and everybody is different so try not to worry about everybody else – you’ll get it in the end up https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif

We just call this the reverse grab into pretzel.
What an amazing routine though and how she holds that pose afterwards when she has taken her leg AND one of her arms off is beyond me! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_surprised.gif
Loving the skirt too https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif

Worth a look I think https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif

Just to back up the short/tall thing https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif Bex who does that tutorial on midkid81s post is ickle as well – think she is about 5’2/5’3 ish. I know though that she did loads and loads of strength training before she got this move – that video is quite old now and she is alot smoother with it, etc. and can hold the Iron X for an age but it is all down to upper body strength and shoulders. She told me she did alot of stuff with one of those door gyms – pull ups, etc. to build up her strength for several months before she managed to get the twisted lift and she is also one of those people who will train for hours and hours and hours to get a move – to the point of breaking herself sometimes https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_eek.gif
I just don’t get the movement required for it yet, but am sure it will click one day. It took me ages to get the thing with the split grip aysha/straight edge type stuff about having to stick your bum out – months in fact until something finally clicked (maybe I’m abit slow! lol)
Good luck to everybody trying this one – am currently 20 weeks pregnant so no poling for me at the moment – booooooooo!!! but hopefully will be back on it next year https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif

I love this move, but haven’t quite yet had the bottle to bring my body round the pole.
I have heard it referred to as a kamikaze before (or something very similar anyway).

I started learning on spinny poles as it seemed to help build strength at first as you didn’t have to concentrate so much on getting yourself round the pole, rather hanging on and maintaining a position. It also was a good trainer to get myself in the right positions for the different basic spins. We always started on spin to warm up and do basic stuff then moved on to static to do holds and once we started inverting to practice that as well.
Spin is so much fun – I can’t go upside down because it all goes pear-shaped for me then, but doing right way round spins is great fun https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif

Personally I would recommend signing up for some classes anyway. I was in the same position as you and am also not inclined to put myself out there on my own, but I’m so glad I did. I don’t have the self-discipline to do it at home and I think, particularly when I first started, I would have given up as I found it very difficult at first – I hadn’t done any exercise, well, forever! I do have my own pole which I love and go on when I feel like it, but I don’t have the routine to teach myself and can always find something else that needs doing in the house before I am able to get on the pole.
The other thing about classes is that, although it might be a little scary for the first couple of times, everybody is usually really friendly – that seems to be the case with poling as the people who do it tend to be really into it and are really happy to help each other out and talk to you. Classes are great for bouncing off others as well – I have learnt stuff I probably wouldn’t have come across on my own through watching others and asking them how they do it.
Try and bite the bullet and just get out there. Once you’ve done it once, you’ll be happier to go to lots of different things in the future.
Let us know how you get on https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif

Is it hard to get to Maidstone from ooop north? Might be interested if I can get there (and back home in one day) easily and cheaply enough https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif

Ooooooh – is that why they don’t work https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif Didn’t know that. I have a plaster ceiling so that would explain things https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif

Those stud finders are about as much use as a chocolate fireguard. I live in a really old terrace so the joists, etc. are probably different. Mine run from the front of the house to the back. If I put my xpole dome up between two joists, it would have it’s edges on both of them (if that give you an idea of how far apart they are). I did resort to getting the thinnest nail I could find and just putting tiny holes in the ceiling to get where the joist was. Then I put a piece of wood under my xpole dome to ensure the weight was distributed evenly (and so I didn’t damage the ceiling as I have left a ring on the ceiling before now).
That’s probably of no use to you whatsoever. Have got to say, you would need to get a ladder and go up and inspect the ceiling really careful to find the three holes I have put up there so I don’t know if your landlord would spot them or not.
Hope you manage to get it up soon https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif

Me again https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif Had a check and $90 equates to about £60 ish and as the postage would cost me around £15-£20 to ensure it got to you safely, it would mean I would be selling them to you for about £40 ($60) which I can’t really afford to do hun – am really sorry about that https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cry.gif

I love my flip but the only downside I have with it is that I have to put it halfway down the street to get a wide enough shot on it to cover the whole of my pole https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_lol.gif Maybe I have a small room, but I have found that to be abit of an issue.
The quality of the recording though is brill https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif -
Sorry hun – all went abit pear-shaped this weekend. Will try sort it out for you over the next couple of days and see about how much it would cost me, etc. If you get any other offers, just let me know – don’t wait for me to sort myself out https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif

Will do https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif Will try find out over the weekend how much it would cost to send them to you, etc. and will come back to you on this thread.

I’m not too sure as all I’ve done is open them and watch a couple once. I’d want to recoup some of what I paid I would think as I haven’t used them and I think they cost me around £70. Give me an offer and I’ll let you know how much it would cost to send them and all that https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif

Are you in the US? I have a set that I would be happy to consider selling, but probably would cost too much with you being over there?

Don’t know if it just didn’t like me or whether that goes for anybody outside of Australia so I had a search round You Tube and somebody put this up about an hour ago https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif

I can’t believe she got through – she is performing on a 6m pole so hopefully she can pull off a brilliant performance https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif Can’t wait to see it.
Tobias Mead last night did abit of pole in his dance act (only one lift), but was pretty good.

My tutor, Bex, does lots of them on this video (amongst a load of other stuff). Don’t know if it will help anyone, but it’s amazing to watch her anyway – she’s so strong!

You know, I would have loved to have had a place like this near me when I was a kid – I just wish I’d found pole sooner. It’s sometimes frustrating being 33 and knowing that I’m not as flexible as I would have been had I found this in my early 20s or something – everything is so much harder now! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_confused.gif

I just got this move – last night in fact with a split grip. It is as Veena is saying as the legs come down and towards the pole, the bum has to move in the opposite direction to counterbalance yourself otherwise you tip about. Was doing my very happy victory pole dance last night when I got this and held it https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif

I had back problems all my life (curved spine, big boobs, bad posture) and pole has eliminated every single one of them. I carry myself much better, stand up straight and my back never hurts (and it has pretty muscles on it ). Whenever I stop poling, my back starts to hurt and it goes away when I pole again, it’s pretty incredible!
ME TOO!!! I used to wake up with trapped nerves, muscle problems and they wouldn’t go away for days. Since I started poling I haven’t had any of those problems at all! Apart from when I stopped for 2 or 3 months and then they slowly started coming back. It’s amazing how much it has helped me feel better.
I have been poling for about 1.5 years as well and I have probably put weight on according to the scales, but my clothes are looser and I have toned up dramatically. Prior to poling, I pretty much hadn’t done any exercise since forced PE at school and that was coming up to 20 years ago. I smoke unfortunately but trying to kick the habit. I don’t drink and have a pretty healthy attitude to food, etc. so have never had a problem with my weight, but I can safely say that I have never been happier with my body than I am now – the only thing I wish pole could do for me is grow my boobs! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_lol.gif
It is a brilliant form of exercise. It will improve your posture, the way you think about yourself, your confidence – or it has for me – along with all the other benefits of being fitter, looking better and having muscles and that. There is also such a good community around poling – whether that is here online or in classes. I would recommend you do a course and push yourself to go to one as when you first start out I feel it is important to have that support around you and it is good to get a group of friends who do the same as you that you can jam with on occasion.
Welcome to the world of Pole https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif
