Pole ups are like pull ups/chin ups but using the pole. Basically grabbing a little higher than your head and then lifting yourself to eye level, letting yourself down and then pulling up again (feet off the floor). Switch which hand is higher.

I saw an ad on Craigslist in Detroit for the same poles. Did not know it was this company but recognize the pictures. Sorry, I don't know anything about them.

This is normally not like her, which is kinda scary! LOL She has shown it off to those coming by to see her!
AWESOME!!!!!
I have poled on pretty much every finish and have had issues with every finish. Day to day things are just going to be different and you just have to deal…that is the beauty of our sport! If you cannot grip then work on floor work (even though you had your heart set on nailing that one move).
Brass: yes it is grippy but it leaves a nasty smell on your hands, scratches really easily and WILL remove skin. I have slipped off of a brass pole just as easily as I have slipped off of TG, chrome, stainless and yes, even my powder coated pink one.
This was a really interesting (to me) conversation that I had with Pantera when she was in town. When you perfrom/compete/teach you have no idea what conditions you are going to come across. You have to be good no matter what. So deal with your slippery pole and learn on it….it will only make you a better poler in the long run!!

In the Art of Pole series Jamilla teaches a sort of 1-2 bend of the knees when you are first learning to hold your weight. Basically what you will do is bend one knee while the other is still down and then release it quickly and while it is moving to the ground bend your other knee. (Think of jumping rope but in a skipping type motion). When you start both feet will be off the ground mere seconds but then you can increase the time that both feet are off the floor.
When I learned to hold my body weight it was just doing pole-ups. I learned the prayer slide as a cool way to get down from a climb.

S Factor calls this a decending angel. Not sure if there is a name for it when hands are still on the pole.

MemberJanuary 12, 2011 at 5:36 am in reply to: “With skin care, every day is everything.” -DoveDuring the winter I really do not do much. I do not wear makeup daily so that is a big part of it. I am also blessed with pretty good skin. I moisturize daily (currently using a cream I got from Sally called Beyond Belief Vita A) after my shower and that is about it. When I wear makeup I remove it with coconut oil and usually a face brush and Neutrogena bar or Cetaphil and then moisturize. I use a 2% salicylic acid acne medication along my hair line because that is where I generally break out. When I do break out worse (typically summer and usually my chin) I use Bye Bye Blemish, which is 10% sulphur and dries them up almost over night. I only exfoliate when my skin is looking drab.
During the summer I don't do much more but will use an astringent once in a while and tend to exfoliate more often.

All of the videos in the Sahramann series (I think there are 5 or 6)

Did the screw come out of the ceiling? On top of a drill and ladder get a level. It needs to be level from 2 sides. I also use a rubber oil filter strap to tighten mine….but of course I already have all of these things.

What kind of pole?
I would say that probably 95% of the people here put up there own poles.

I was not talking front leg in splits when wearing heels but rather your back leg. I want to say that most performers will have that back leg laying sideways on the floor.
Even on the pole this seems to be the norm, with or without shoes:

With the exception of gymnasts pretty much every photo I have pulled up on google images for splits has the back leg sideways on the floor.

Amy, I think there has been discussion about this in the splits progress thread where this technique of stretching was first brought up. It is the difference between "jazz splits" and regular splits. On the floor in shoes I really do not think you can do straight splits, if you are trying to get them for aerial work that is another story. I am just trying to get down far enough period and if jazz splits are the only ones I can do right now I will take those. Never in my life, even when I was in gymnastics as a child and a cheerleader in middle school, could I do the splits.

Amy…this is the way that is explained in the splits in 6 weeks, which is what I have been working on.
"The last of the six exercises you must do each day is of course the front splits because the only ay your body learns is by practicing, so the splits every day is what is required.
There are two ways of doing them you can either have the foot and knee of the back leg facing the floor or you can have the foot and knee pointing to the side and it is the second way that you should do them.
Why?
For three reasons, one being that if you choose the first method you place the back leg in a position were it automatically wants to bend at the knee and if your back leg is bent you can not do a proper full splits. This habit can be overcome through training but it is easier and quicker to adopt the foot to the side technique.
The second reason is simply that your back leg slides a lot easier with the foot pointing sideways than it does with the foot pointing down towards the floor as the toes tend to dig in to the ground and make it harder to slide.
And
The third reason is that when it is time to start practicing isometrics whilst in the splits position you will find it a lot easier to maintain your balance with the back foot pointing towards the side."

"Two main drawbacks are the coordination it takes to work the powerball and getting the ripcord (starting string) stuck inside the ball."
I have had this happen twice and it is a b*tch!! I will say though I have kind of learned how to start the ball without the string. I have not perfected the one flick start but can usually get it going with a few spins.

Someone else in Atlanta was looking for a pole recently and another here suggested hardcore poles. They are in Marietta but I see that their site is down.

Just put these in the splits progress thread and decided to post them here, too. Week 1 pictures:

1.) What occurs at a pole jam?
Typically just a bunch of polers getting together and having fun. It is not a structured class and lots of times it is poeple showing other people moves or maybe giving a different perspective. Basically just a chance to meet other polers that you may only know online.
2.) Is it open to everyone, including people who are brand spankin new?
Open to EVERYONE. Like I stated earlier, it is more of a social get together that centers around pole instead of eating or drinking.
3.) How do I keep up-to-date on local jams? I understand the February one is not happening and the next likely won't be until May or beyond.
Most will be posted here in the events section. There are also postings on facebook and also http://midwestpoledancing.webs.com/

I bought the classic neon NSD Power Ball off ebay last year. I believe that the majority of the NSD balls are 283 gm and 250 Hz. They do have a few that are heavier and have a higher power motor but honestly these are perfect. The RPM is really a bogus measurement because YOU are the one who controls how fast the ball spins.
There is a lot of really good information on the NSD site about the differences between the manufacturers and even all sorts of different exercises you can do with them. (Basically the 2 manufacturers are NSD and DynaFlex).

Not to burst a bubble, but Mighty Grip sells ankle protectors with a vinyl coating and they are only $18.
I have been using a trick that the wonderful and incredibly sexy Amy suggested and that is to use electrical tape wrapped around the foot that gets beat up. I just recently found that they also make it in clear.

Squeeee!!! I will be able to access during lunch now!
