I did a performance to part of Adele’s song One and Only for a friend’s wedding. I concentrated on big, open poses and slow, smooth transitions. I was also using my lyra, though, so a little different. I’ll post part of the video, maybe if you want to see it anyway.

I had to pretty much give up on my outside silks when I moved a couple of years ago. I lost my nice sheltered spot, and the breeze made it so that I would just tire myself out chasing the tails when trying to do anything, or get tangled once I had managed to do something.

I have a Lyra and a climbing rope that I rig outside. It takes a little extra planning to get good conditions, but I think it’s worth it though.

I like rope climbing as an additional excercise. I use both a thick old-school gym rope (like in this article: http://www.apexmovement.com/blog/4-reasons-to-climb-rope/ ) with just my body and a rock climbing rope with a harness and metal ascenders to climb (jugging, in rock climber parlance). The gym rope is best for working on my grip, but even climbing with ascenders, I still have to use my arms, legs and core to progress up the rope. Plus, rope climbing is fun, so it makes me want to do it.

I’m another formerly home-schooled kid chiming in. I would say check your state laws first before you decide about curriculums and stuff, because there may be requirements in the law that you need to meet. For first starting out, maybe have a look at correspondence schools. These usually have a complete lesson plan and include all of the books and sometimes all of the supplies that you need for the lessons. There are also services where you can send the completed work to a teacher and have them mark it and give feedback. Also check with your school district to find out if/when they sell off their used textbooks. Often you can get a bunch really cheap. Sometimes they have used regular books from the school libraries as well.

I’m finally starting to consider that I just physically cannot push myself as hard during the winter when it’s cold as I can when it’s warm. I’ve tried hot showers and layers and heaters, but there’s just nothing like it being 90 degrees F out to make me feel my best. While I’m not pushing myself very hard, I do try to make sure that I’m not using the cold as an excuse to sit on my butt. I do matinence stretching and work stuff that I’m fairly comfortable. Also I just see how I’m feeling. Some times, even when it’s cold, I can bust out a pretty great workout, other days I can just get through several rounds of Sun Salutations.

I have a tattoo on my upper thigh, and it hides pretty well except in summer when I’m wearing shorts. Then it peeks out the bottom a little. It’s not small, though. If you want to see, one of my challenge videos, the one with the roller, shows it. Hips can also hide pretty well.

Ha ha, busted! ☺️ I may have been trying to push my range of motion. Thanks Lina. I will definitely pay more attention to what my quads are doing when I’m stretching and flying. I’ll try standing splits in addition to floor ones too. My knees are in good shape, so hopefully I can work this out with everyone’s advice. Thanks to everyone.

You might want to try sports tape or athletic tape instead of electrical tape.  Sports tape is cloth based and designed not only to go on your skin, but more importantly come off your skin.  I find that it also stays in place better for me when I'm sweating.

I trained in Aikido for about ten years, but unfortunately have not been able to train for the last couple of years. I also trained in karate for a while when I was younger.

*raises hand*  I don't do pole much anymore, but I do other aerials (mostly silk), and all my videos are pretty basic, but feel free to take a look and see if they might help your friend.

Sweet. I’ve been thinking about getting a lyra. Now, how to choose?

Anybody taken any aerial classes at Shine?  If so, thoughts?

It seems to me that you could just nail along the top edge of the sheet(s) into the studs, or maybe even just thumbtacks? Never tried unfinished walls, but it works on drywall. Just make sure you use the hard part of the wall.

I tend to be very routine oriented, so once I get into it, it works. May not be as easy for you. Try several different ways, and see what clicks.

In my experience, working out really just becomes a habit.  I do it because that's what I do in the afternoons. I'm not saying that I don't do it to stay strong and flexible and get better at moves and that I no longer feel good after working out (quite the opposite), it's just that I don't have to consciously think about why I work out any more.  I'm also totally guilty of sometimes waking up in the morning just totally not feeling like working out or I get sucked into reading a book or teh internetz or something during the day.  I try to not beat myself for being lazy, and just carry on the next day (or the day after, or the day after).  I usually find that having a break is usually helpful, as it helps me refocus and gives my body a break.  Sometimes though, I do need a boost to get back in to it.  I do things like watch YouTube videos, either new ones or some favorites, or I'll listen to songs that I just like to dance to, or that I'd like to choreograph to in order to summon the mojo.

It seem like it really depends on what you want out of the experience.  If you are really struggling to get in a work out every day, maybe you should reevaluate if you should be working out everyday.  Try working out every other day, or maybe every couple of days.  Try shorter workouts each day, or less days but longer workouts on those days. Really consider why you are doing this too.  Are you doing it because it's fun?  Because you're training for a competition?  If you really need something out side your own self to be motivated, maybe find a friend who can give you that outside push to keep at it.  Don't forget, maybe your motivation is just cyclical.  Make the most of the time when you have it, back off a bit when you don't, then carry on when you do.

I got a huge boost the other day.  One of my friends who has no idea about aerial stuff came over while I was working out the other day, and was totally blown away by me doing a simple climb up the silk and standing.  I feel like sometimes I get so wrapped up in what I am working on and practicing and trying to make work that I forget just what it is that I can do, and how it looks to others.

I have been the only girl (or one of few) pretty much my whole life. The most important thing that I can tell you is to not let it become a “thing”. Do your job well, act professionally, and don’t be afraid to ask questions and get dirty (metaphorically or maybe literally, depending on what you do). Tell a raunchy joke or two. Be friendly. Since this is new, they’re having to get used to you as much as you are getting used to them.

    @Dwiizie
Not a yoga expert or anything, but for me spreading my fingers reminds me to engage the muscles in my hands and arms so that I’m not just crunching all my weight on my wrists. Like when a ballet teacher tells you to “pull up”. I find that it’s easier on my joints when I make sure that all my muscles are engaged.

    Physical:

    1.  Strong shoulders

    2.  Defined waist

    3.  Toned calves

Aerial related (silks, hope it still counts):

    1.  Strong enough to lift my own self (used to be one of those girls who thought upper body strength was only for boys)

    2.  Discipline to work out and practice on a regular basis

    3.  Sheer joy at what my body is capable of; what I am capable of. 😀

I use Rock Exotica's Swivabiner for my single point hammock.  'Biners and swivel all in one.  Takes up way less space than two 'biners + swivel.  It's not a ballbering swivel though, so I wouldn't drop on it, but I can spin well with body weight on it.  Not sure if they ship to the UK though.

Not sure if I’m talking about the same drop, and I’ve done it on silks tied into a sling, but what I find helpful is to arch my back slightly as I’m going over and lead with my chest. Think about making an arc, rather than going straight down, then over.

This! If anyone has been to a silk and or aerial class there, I would love to hear about your experience.
