Veena is exactly right! Keep trying!
You can start doing really easy spins straight away. Even if you don’t succeed at them, you’ll be building muscle just by trying.
I find many teachers neglect to mention the forearm or ‘grip’ muscles that you need when you learn pole. (Doing pushups and handstands is fantastic for arms and shoulder etc, so do keep doing those btw.) These are the muscles that run from your elbow to wrist and help you squeeze your hand tight. Getting a stress ball and squeezing that, or getting those thing that look like pliers from a sports shop and squeezing them will help. You can also try just holding onto the pole high up (with your inside hand) with your feet near the base, and leaning away gently. Remember to switch hands and repeat.
Beginner spins you can work on:
– Forwards knee spin/front knee hook/forwards tart/butterfly spin
– Fireman/crossknee spin
– Lollipop/kneegrip fireman spin
– Back knee spin/backwards tartYou’re right Georgia, much emphasis isn’t put onbuilding up forearm strength. I like to do hammer curls and other types of curls because they work the biceps as well as the forearm…all you need is a couple of dumb bells https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif . I also sometimes just hold the dumb bells and curl my wrists in and out.
Here’s the funny thing. I’m right handed but my left hand is my stronger hand on the pole. I think it’s from me playing guitar hero (which I am addicted to). When playing that game my left hand is the one fingering the keys and thats a lot of finger and hand motion that I think has built up the strength in that arm LOL. I know that sounds far fetched but, I really think thats what has happened LOL.

Hey sissy, so you’ll be in Alethia’s sun morn workshop at 9:30?? That’s awesome!!! Can’t wait to meet you! Who are you going with and where are you staying?
I guess I’m nervous cuz I’m driving alone to a place I’ve never been to be with people I don’t know. It’s like I feel when I have an early morning flight…. Will I make it in time? Will I know where to park? Will I run into traffic? Who will sit next to me on the plane….can you relate?? Thank goodness my hubby just bought a tom-tom navigator. At least I know I won’t get lost. It’s gonna be a long day for me with 7 hours drive time, two 90 minute workshops and a 3 hour show. I’ll get home late and then I’m up at 5:30 mon morning to go to work. I have mild chronic fatigue syndrome and I know this will take a lot out of me.
Did you get regular or vip tickets? It looks like the VIPs are sold out? I wonder what you get with VIP??
Hey girly,
If I do take a work shop it’ll be that 9:30 one most likely. I’m driving in alone but I’m going to be sharing a room with roxy-pink, redke and Takeila Fox. We’re staying at the Holiday Inn on Emmet Street. I think that’s the hotel Sara and Alethea are staying in too and I think it’s pretty close to the venue and the workshop location.I understand your nervousness. I’m a combination of all kinds of excited nerves too LOL. So you’re driving up Saturday Morning and coming back monday morning?
We got VIP tickets. I just checked on the site and selected to buy a Tier 1 ticket and it looks like there sre still some available…I didn’t know you didnt have your show tickets yet. I thought you meant you didnt have workshop tickets.
Girl you better get you a ticket!!! LOL
Do you know where you will be staying yet?

Whatever you wear, you’ll look fine!! I’ll probably wear jeans! I’m nervous about waking up that morning at 6 to start driving down to Virginia for Alethia’s 9:30 workshop! I haven’t gotten tix yet, are they still available? I was going to see how I feel after the two workshops (I’m doing Sarah’s at 11 too). Can you sit where ever or is it assigned seating? If anyone wants to drive down with me from b-more let me know. There are still slots in Alethia’s class I think.
Why are you nervous about driving up that morning? The drive?
I want to do Aletheas workshop but I wont get there until 3:30-ish on saturday so I’d have to take her sunday workshop. Last I checked there were plenty of tickets left but that was earlier this week…
Roxy called and checked on the seating thing and you can sit wherever you want https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_thumleft.gif

Super congrats. I’m still working on a CAR….

Well there’s one person with something to wear LOL.
I have my go to little black dress. I’m thinking of wearing that and getting some new shoes and accesories…
Although I do have a ball gown in the closet……

Sounds to me like you did a cross knee or cross ankle release which is super sweet! Do you have a vid by chance…..hmm? https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif

Hi and welcome!!!
Pole dancing (and exercise in general) are really great for all types of things. I first started running a few years ago when I was diagnosed with Anxiety Disorder and Depression. After months of steady excercise I was able to get off of my medicaiton and haven’t been back on it since!
I can’t wait to watch you in your journey! I’ll be looking out for those vids!

Yeah, I have a problem with thinking of cool links. However I am really good at stealing other peoples link moves and then learning them, LMAO! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_twisted.gif

I would try the boots…I thought I had strong hamstrings too, until I started doing the star, and knee holds. That position is really unnatural, you’ll get it! Boots I say! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_geek.gif
LOL, ok ok. Boots it is!

I’m telling ya its all about the hamstrings (the back of the thigh) muscle. It contracts in the same basic manner as your arms bicep muscle….it can pull. On the pole work might include side climbs, the star (this one is great for preparing you for the knee hold) to name a few. For exercises off the pole….squats, walking lunges…if you focus on pressing off with your HEEL you will focus more on the glute/butt and hamstring area. Bridges are great too. I would also try a pair of high sticky boot, this can help you work on your strength without the PAIN https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_pale.gif on your skin, you can then focus on holding the move and not the pain.
I work on my hamstrings a good deal but I suppose I could try to do more. I’m definitely going to try some high boots….I think I have some too….. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cool.gif

The knee hold thread sparked this question in my mind because I think that whenever I am at the level to try the knee hold I’ll have problems with the upper leg (as well as the lower knee agony) because my "knee pits" are weak as hell.
Are there excercises or beginner/intermediate type moves that I can do to build up knee pit tolerance? It’s really causing me to struggle with my Gemini too (as you saw the other night Veena).
Maybe I should just start wacking myself behind the knees with a big stick to deaden the nerves LOL. You know, like a Muay Thai fighter! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_twisted.gif
Next week I’ll show you what used to do to "strengthen" my knee pits…I believe Jamilla calls it a flatline gemini…
Ok, but don’t let me forget!

I’ve been watching your lessons and I walk into it the way you show it. I have yet to try anything on static other than climbing. I really should. I just don’t see how you can do a full circle lol. I would think my skin would stick to the pole.
I definitely think you should try learning your spins on static first, unless of course you never plan on ever using static LOL. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_lol.gif
Some people don’t *cough* GlitterHips *cough* https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_lol.gif https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_lol.gif
