    Ok…I hope I get a pass on this….

For the record, even though I have a bachelors in Psychology and am not a nurse, I’ve worked 25 years as a public health professional–the last 22 years inspecting nursing homes (all components of the inspectional tasks, from photographing garbage dumpsters, reviewing charts, investigating physical and financial abuse, to observing psychosocial therapy groups). I am also the Determination of Need screener for Supportive Living Facilities in Southern Cook County for Public Aid (now called Healthcare and Family Services)

So my interest in incontinence issues is purely professional..not prurient.

Incontinence tends to be one of the primary threshold issues in families making the decision to place an elderly relative into an institutional living setting (i.e., nursing home). In addition to the "cosmetic" issues of odor and appearance, etc…, incontinence can be the gateway to skin breakdown and the formation of pressure ulcers ("bedsores") in the perineal/coccyx area. So anything that a person can do to stave off this problem is quite beneficial from a medical standpoint also!

Believe it or not, but the technology of Kegel exercises now permits patients with difficult pelvic floor issues to connect a device to their PC via a USB connector. The device will measure pressure on different areas of the sensor to tell you if you are "squeezing" the right area and put a graph up in your spreadsheet program. These devices are VERY expensive and mostly limited to rehab professionals–but a few are available to consumers on line.

There is now a Kegel device that will "talk" to you via a Bluetooth wireless headphone. It’s called the "Peritron Precision Perineometer" and it runs about a thousand bucks. (No, really…I’m not kidding–google the name!)

Probably not a necessary item for the average person (unless you are the ultimate gadget freak, LOL!)–but a useful kind of device for individuals with more severe issues and a need to "train" and "learn" where the muscle groups are located…

Men can benefit from these exercises, too. I’ve learned from hundreds of sceening interviews that elderly men are rarely honest about low level incontinence issues (dribbling is how it usually starts), so denial is a factor. Guys won’t do the exercises because they don’t ever admit they have a problem.

I LOVE the new screen name.

I have to admit that sometimes I got a little confused with the old one. I’m just a slight bit dyslexic (I’m a letter reverser when I read/write/type) and I could never get my brain to settle on Mrs. Trone or Mr. Strone when I would "say" it inside my brain! Yes, my brain is screwed up, LOL!

So, Roxy~Pink it is! It’s got class and style…

    Congratulations, Veena!

I haven’t really gotten used to the idea of Studio Veena as a video hosting site, yet! Let me say I am REALLY IMPRESSED–shocked to see so many newbies getting started by posting their vids on SV. I guess I’ve got to get with the program. I’ll be off work in July for vacation and I hope to get some vids up on SV, too!

Great work, Veena! You are blazing the trail.

    Glitter,

I’ve stayed mostly out of this thread because I wasn’t sure if you’d be comfortable with a guy making a comment. But when I saw how Azriel had offered support by calling all the way from Greece, I figured it was time for me to step up to the plate!

You were very courageous to seek the medical attention right away. If I had been half as smart and brave as you, I wouldn’t be looking at shelling out big bucks to replace a bad tooth. I’m scared even to go to the dentist!

I hope everything works out well. Best wishes to you and get well soon!

Pole practice interruptions are a big pole "nemesis" for me. It’s one thing that I really like about the health club as opposed to pole practice in my basement. Everyone at the health club is there to work out. Even when you see people you know, if you get the vibe they are seriously into their workout, you just give ’em that little "wave" and move on to your next weight station. It’s all about the business, no idle chit chat while you are working out.

But at home…it’s the doorbell…or the phone… Or I’ll have the TV on in the background and get into a show and totally lose focus, LOL!

It’s one reason I’d like to try a class, if one were available for men here. I think I would be more focused.

I’m 48, I weigh 197 lbs as of this morning. I have two kids seven years apart. My son is 20, a sophomore in music at the University of Illinois (keyboard/organs), and a 13 year old daughter who is in eighth grade. My wife is 47 and teaches Biology in High School. We’ve been married for about…hmm, I always forget…22 years?

April 16, 2009 at 5:00 am in reply to: Tinnitus

I just read an article about Tinnitus in a major magazine–cannot remember which one– (New Yorker?). Anyway, there is a lot of new research suggesting that it has a powerful neurological component. Possibly, neurons in the part of the brain wired to process sound become "locked in" and continue to "fire" after the sound stimulus itself has gone away. One of the scientists interviewed has had some success in using specially prepared sequences of tones designed to suppress the sounds. I wonder if these are available as downloadable files to an I-pod or MP3 player. He plays these tones to experimental subjects and some percentage of them get relief from the symptoms without medication. The beeps and musical notes are designed to "quiet down" the neurons by overstimulating them–in much the same way that Ritalin, a stimulant, "calms" down the cortex in hyperactive children.

I get minor low frequency rumbling around allergy season. I’ve always assumed it’s congestive in nature (not Tinnitus) because Sudafed–or even a triple shot of Espresso from Starbucks–will make it go away. Problem is–try sleeping a full night with the amount of decongestant you have to take to stop the rumbling sound, LOL! Fortunately, it seems to hang around only for ragweed season (Sept) and new grass (May)–so it’s just a few weeks of the "hum" and it’s gone. Red wine and any kind of pilsnerish Beer (like Sam Adams) does it, too. Somebody told me that Sulfites or residues in the fermenting process can make you allergic and stuff up the ear canal.

If I remember the citation, I will post the name and date of the magazine…

April 15, 2009 at 4:35 am in reply to: Husband wants to take me to a strip club

I have never been to a strip club! But since taking up the interest in pole dancing, I’d really like to see a pole dance live. Isn’t that funny…? I mean, I’ve watched thousands of videos, know the names of all the moves, started pole dance fitness myself…and NEVER seen a live pole dance. Unless yuou count watching myself in the mirror.

I asked Laurie flat out if she minded if I went to a club. She said she was OK with it. She definitely wont go WITH me, though–although we have gone to a few burlesque shows together. Laurie doesn’t play mind games or anything, so I know if she objected to it, she’d say so. Which isn’t to say she thinks it’s a great idea–but she understands my curiosity and she’ll tolerate my doing it without giving me a hassle about it.

I actually had the chance to go this week–Thursday night there was an amateur night contest that’s part of a six week long contest at a big club here in Chicago. But I chickened out, LOL! I wouldn’t say this anywhere alse but here or on PJ’s, but I guess I ‘m just a little scared to go. It’s just an unfamiliar situation to me. I mean, I go to music clubs all the time, talk with the waitresses, BS with the bands, all that stuff. But I guess the strip club feels a little intimidating….

I think you should go with your husband to the club. Try to set up whatever boundaries you need to feel comfortable. I’m ashamed to admit it–but you ladies are right about one thing–there’s not too much complicated going on in the male brain.* The whole idea of having his wife along with him in the strip club is probably a bit of a turn on. It seems fairly harmless and it’ll probably make him very excited and happy!

    Joel

    * Footnote–although, I do think some of the ladies on the forums DO underestimate how much men are turned on by SMART women. Honestly, seduction…it’s as much mental as anything else. We should start another thread for that convesation!

Oh boy, I’ll probably get in big trouble for this post, LOL–but I’m sure it will reveal a key difference in how guys react to things versus the way the ladies do!

…Because the first thing that popped into my mind when you talked about your husband pulling the batteries out of the phone was that you should do the same thing to his television remote!

OK, I know…that’s not nice…but a little retaliation is fun sometimes, LOL!

Two You-Tube polers worth checking out–just for some of their floor moves–are RhiannonNicole, and Lori, the owner of TRANZENDANCE.

RhiannonNicole dances in the traditional club style, lots of crawling, rolling, recovering, inchworming, peeling…the whole package of "predatory on the prowl" moves that really builds up the fire, LOL!

Lori has a video called "Epaulement" –French for Shoulder Technique–she is more in the ballet and contemporary art dance style. She has some floor rolls and flips that involve using the shoulder and upper body as a fulcrum for body rolling and twisting on the floor. She also has a unique "roll and pincer V" thing she does on the ground with her legs…well, I can’t describe it, LOL…you just gotta see it! Lori has a studio somewhere in Colorado, I think.

    Taylor!

I’m with Azriel…you should see a doc ASAP.

Do not freak out or anything, because if it is Tetanus…that is certainly treatable with antibiotics, but you shouldn’t let it wait. A key indicator you should try to determine is if FEVER is present. If you are running a temp, tht MIGHT be a sign of infection and you should really go to the doctor right away.

Are you living alone? Try to get a buddy/friend to stay with you until situation is resolved so you are not by yourself. You are a grad student, right? Is there a campus health service that comes paid for with your tuition if health insurance is an issue?

They will do a spatula test–basically they just stick a swab near the roof of the mouth–they can tell whether or not you gag–as a sign of the condition. They can also do a culture for the C.tetani bacillus. Usually tetanus IS associated with a wound or puncture, however…

Take care, sweetheart…Now I’ll be worried crazy about you until you let us know you are OK!

I see pole dance as being like any other form of expressive or interpretive art. Such forms of creativity can vary immensely in their content and purpose. Photography is a perfect example–ranging from its commercial use in advertising, to artistic portraiture, still life, nature photography, yearbook snapshots, and even pornography. Criticizing the entire field of pole dancing because some pole dancing is sexual and erotic is like banning high school yearbook pictures because they are taken with the same kind of 35mm lens used to take the pictures in Playboy!

I think there is a time and a place for everything. I certainly enjoy sexy, club style pole dance (although I haven’t visited a club yet)…but I also get into the gymnastic "tricks" videos, and the ladies who style their performances more in the tradition of ballet or jazz dancing. I admire the tough ladies who dance in clubs–I think that takes the kind of sheer guts and confidence that I wish I could muster up in certain situations in my own life!

I am not a formally religious person, but I was raised in the Christian tradition and respect everyone who seeks the Divine in any way that is serious minded and respectful. I saw Jungle Cat’s vid a few minutes after he uploaded it. I found his movements in the dance projected a feeling of strength and contemplation. He set just the right tone to match the Gospel music playing in the background.

In my second comment uploaded to the re-posted video, I made reference to another poler who has courageously used pole dancing to acknowledge serious events and personal grief–Shelly of ExDiva69 Channel. She has done an awesome tribute to the victims of 9-11 and also done a few videos marking some VERY difficult personal tragedies–the worst thing you could ever imagine– in a way that has been tasteful, uplifting, and moving.

One other thing I was going to mention–I’ve seen Krizbe84 in Scotland use this, and Boomloulou in Singapore, also:

That’s the inflatable camping mattress that blows up with an air pump included with the product. Walmart sells these for less than 50$ for a twin sized mattress. They are six inches thick. You will still have a little "breakthrough" however, if a pointy part of your body hits the air mattress. (Like an elbow or your heel). So put a carpet scrap UNDERNEATH the air mattress to stop breakthrough.

Boom and Krizbe have both posted vids with their gigantic inflatables underneath them. Ain’t no shame in avoiding the orthopedic surgeon’s office, LOL!

But it sounds like you’ve found a good solution for now. Anyway, camping supplies go on sale in the fall–stuff’ll be cheaper 5-6 months from now!

Wait, I’m confused…what is the reverse crucifix?

I am thinking the regular inverted crucifix is done fromthe basic tip back invert (simple invert), with the ankles hooking the pole. The dancer then lets go when comfortable and stretches the arms out. The dancer has the back to the pole and is looking outwards.

Is the reverse crucifix FACING the pole? Or am I totally mixed up? (!)

I don’t usually get negative comments on my videos either…but after the suit and tie video went "viral" on Attack of the Show, I did get a few. Most were of the homophobic variety. What fascinated me most was that EVERY one of these idiots had ABSOLUTELY NOTHING on their own channel besides other people’s videos. One man who made the nastiest comments had KIDDIE CARTOONS on his playlist that he had lifted from Nickelodeon!

To me, the homophobic comments were so obviously an expression of the writer’s own personal anxiety that it was simply pathetic. I have a quite a few lesbian and gay friends/neighbors–I’m quite certain none of them would find MY videos the least bit sexually arousing, LOL! It seems to me that there were quite a few guys who watched the video, felt insecure about their own identity, and wrote a nasty comment just to prove to themselves they were still straight! That’s pretty sad!

I can tell you with absolute certainty that when a guy talks this way about a woman, it is jealousy talking. I think to a certain extent, all of us men have fairly fragile egos (either that–or the opposite problem–being a sociopath, LOL!) and the hardest "barrier" to get over is the maturity to put yourself out there and take the risk of rejection. Some guys just never get past this and they just spend their lives eternally pissed off at women.

I think some men are also afraid of the things they are attracted to–especially any kind of display with sexual overtones. For younger guys, especially, they have a difficult time separating the strong feelings and drives associated with sexuality from some prior association of these feelings with shame or embarassment. Or maybe they are afraid they can’t control themselves. So the easiest way to distance themselves from "temptation" is just to trash the women who do these things that they are fearful of.

One last thing. I know this whole "power" terminology in feminism gets overused sometimes–but honestly, I think there is DEFINITELY some truth in the idea that sexuality (FEMALE sexuality) is a force, a power to be reckoned with….and a certain kind of guy just can’t handle it. I mean, you see this in cinema all the time–especially in the horror genre. Don’t you just know that the hottest, blondest, thinnest high school cheerleader is always going to get killed off first–in the most gruesome manner possible… ?

I think art and culture are just reflecting that whole fear of women thing–just in a more "refined" way….

By the way, does anyone know what happened to Kelly Kayne? I know that she was listed as a contestant in Miss Nude Canada in 2008. I googled her name to see if she posts any new pole material. To my knowledge, she has no You-Tube channel and has produced no pole videos recently. There was a porn blogger using the same name a few months back (it always came up when you tried to google her name–the blogger spelled her name the EXACT same way). Then, that individual disappeared from google searches. I always wondered if the two had had any sort of legal dispute over the use of the same show business name.

Kelly was such an awesome poler. The clips that float around You-Tube are from the early instructional VHS tapes she did with Fawnia Mondey (Diectrich), I believe. Is Kelly still around? Retired? If anyone knows, I would love to find out what’s up with her. I re-watched that link you put up, Glitter. It was one of the videos that got me interested inpole dancing. I still consider Kelly’s body wave to be the gold standard.

I don’t know if anyone has heard of her most famous claim to fame–but reportedly, she won her Miss Nude Canada title back in ’06 by performing a strip tease balanced on ONE ARM. I have seen a still photo from the competition site. It is simply beyond belief. According to legend, she got into the club business on a dare from her sister to appear in a local wet-t-shirt competition, walked away with the cash prize, went into the club and nude modeeling business and never looked back!

Well, if it’s any consolation,I’m 48 years old, married, with a son in college…

..and I still deal with an overbearing, difficult parent who criticises and makes unwelcome judgments and criticisms of my life, choices, and decisions. She’s 80 years old now and age has not yet tempered her opinons one bit!

One thing I will say, though: posting videos of yourself (especially as that "middle aged bald guy who pole dances") on You-Tube will toughen up your ability to weather criticism very quickly. I make it a point never to block or respond harshly to any comment–no matter how moronic, nasty, homphobic, or idiotic it is. It’s had the remarkable effect of making me more calm in my real day-to-day life.

I once read an article by a retired stripper (ooops, exotic dancer, Veena) who became a corporate executive. People would ask her if she got nervous doing seminars and presentations in front of a roomful of mostly male executives. She responded that after dancing naked in front of hundreds of spectators night after night, there wasn’t anything going on in a corporate conference room that she was afraid of!

I’m a big believer in mats. I am not petit–195 pounds of weight would smack the ground pretty hard–even from a short height.

Before I bought the rather expensive mats, I just piled up old bathroom mats, comforters, and lounge chair cushions. I have pegged foam squares permanently under the poling area.

The fastest, cheapest way to get protection is sheets of foam rubber used for projects and bunting at the sewing store. I’ve gotten fragments and endpieces for a couple of bucks. It’s a nasty green or yellow colored piece of foam, but with enough layers it will save your a** and your noggin.

Yes, the Natasha Richardson case got my attention. I’ve ridden a bike THOUSANDS of miles without a helmet over the last 20-30 years–but that is an activity in which I have TOTAL confidence in myself.

Not so with poling!…Hence, the mats,….. lots of them!

All of the polers on the major North American forums have been extremely gracious to me as one of the few men who poles and posts pole dance or fitness videos on You-Tube. I had been really afraid of the reaction I might get if I had tried to join one of the forums, so I hung back for quite a while. Veena was the FIRST to formally invite me to join a forum and it really broke the ice for me.

Now I regularly post and/or chat in several of the on-line venues. Each is special and valuable in its own way but I am especially grateful to Veena for the way she reached out and pulled me into this larger community.

    Thanks, Veena!

I’ve heard about it, although I don’t understand all of the details. I guess it is kind of a mini web on the web and you can message inside of and outside of groups you set up with similar interests.

Some of the waitresses and musicians at the local rock/blues clubs have the newer G3 phones (phones that connect to the internet directly) and they can be logged in to a group all the time. So her boyfriend is the lead gutarist in a band and they were playing a gig in New Orleans and he put the I-phone on top of the amplifier on stage. So we were sitting at the bar watching a band here in Chicago…and watching her boyfriend playing onstage in a bar a thousand miles away. It’s pretty freaky if you are into gadgets and stuff!

    Joel

Oh…and one more thing…with certain apps you can enable real time tracking via GPS and it will put you as a "dot" on a map…and I think there is a way you can let your "twittermates" know where you are if you want to. So if you are into bike riding or hiking rallies and festivals I guess it would be a cool way to find people in a group or a large area…

Novadog, I am thinking that what Jeng is referring to as the crescent moon is the inverted move that looks like the bowed part of the bow and arrow. In its most extreme form, the arch, it can develop into a contortionist move with the tops of the legs horizontal and facing upwards and the dancer’s upper body bent almost all the way down, chest facing the ground, head looking backwards.

Welcome to the site, Andy! Geez…I never heard of that kind of problem with a P/S pole . I know there’s a little sense of rivalry between the fans of each company, but generally, both types of pole are viewed as reputable and dependable. Did it break at an extension or connection–or literally fracture along the tube?
