It might just be you don’t quite have the strength yet. I find it hurts less after awhile because you eventually gain the strength to lift yourself and not have your skin drag against the pole.
But, it may also be that your positioning isn’t quite right. I could do the straight-leg seat but not the cross-leg seat, until I started classes and my teacher took one look and told me what to adjust, and that was that – easy-peasy!
You’ll get there!

It’s always hard not comparing to others. I progress slowly at the pole and have different goals than a lot of others – which is to say I’m not aiming for tons of acrobatics. But I am still progressing, and you will, too!
For inspiration, check out http://www.youtube.com/oliviashelster – I love her! She is a big girl, but dances beautifully, and shares her whole experience with you. She was one of the main reasons I fell in love with pole dancing!

I’m never one for using kids to further my own crusade. So I would hesitate to try to use my stepkid and her friends as an opportunity to explain about pole and pole fitness. Rather, I’d go with her comfort level, my comfort level, and the tone in the community. It’s one thing for me to take on any hassles; it’s another to put a kid in the middle of it.
Which is to say that I think I’d take the pole down if her friends were coming over, or move it to another location, and just explain that, while pole is a perfectly great thing to do, the sport is still misunderstood. If the kids are old enough to understand, I’d explain the situation exactly – that it has sexual overtones relating to strip clubs and that people judge it harshly as a result.
Then again, her mom loves that I pole and all the neighbors here are used to the idea, so I would likely leave it up and just call it a climbing pole or vertical monkey bars.
It is tricky, though, isn’t it? It’s such a weird Scarlet Letter feeling …

I think this is such great news!! Your students will be in awe of your skills on the pole. And if you ever share your history, they will be even more inspired – in pole, and in their own lives. Don’t ever underestimate the power of your own journey. If you are growing – and you are! – your story and just being who you are will be a help to those around you.
Also, I always find a bit of hero-worship happens between students and teachers. They will probably think you are cool beyond belief and just hope one day to be like you. And with your good teaching, they will!

God, Veena, I wish I’d known about this forum when I started pole dancing. That would have been so helpful!

Thanks, Frida! Everyone’s been so enthusiastic – I admit, I was a little worried how people would take my spin on the whole pole dancing thing. So to speak. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif

I have ballet slippers which are great for dancing and I can still split heel and cupid in them so they would be ideal I think because pole does do a number on feet.
Thanks, Charley, I will have to check into getting a pair!
I am a barefoot dancer, but not by choice. In my heart, I’d be in stilettos ALL THE TIME. Sadly, I have bad feet – a couple of surgeries and they still aren’t right. I have a hard time even in flats, and can’t be barefoot on hard wood any more. Very annoying. So I pole at home on the carpet, barefoot. When I go out, I wear these little kitten heels I got at Payless. They are super cute and were extremely comfortable – I could dance for hours. But then I wound up bruising some bone in my big toe in the last week, and now EVERYTHING hurts. Really hope this heals quickly.
In the meantime, I thank god that, while I may wish to be wearing me some boots, I can at least look perfectly normal as a barefoot pole dancer. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif

Hi NIki –
University can have its ugly moments, and you are in one – homework and finals hell. I definitely agree with Sascha: take a little time out to take care of yourself – interpret that however you mean, Sascha. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif It will pay off in better concentration and better retention of your studies.
As for Mr. Perfect, I assure you, he’s not. And he doesn’t feel that he is, either. Even if he acts it – hell, especially if he acts it. Everybody excels at different things. Maybe he finds university suits him. That’s cool, but that doesn’t mean you aren’t doing well or won’t succeed. Real life is different from university, and every job is different, so I have no doubt you’ll find your niche. All you need is the piece of paper and the information. No one in real life gives a damn about how many hours it took you to get which grades. You will do fine! And real life can be a lot of fun. Just hang in there, remember you are not doing worse than the others, even if it feels that way, and you are going to be just fine. Truly.
