Thank you for posting Veena. This was a good read. I think that the part about comparisons, perfections, and body image are mainly accurate. However, I don’t agree that wearing make-up is necessarily a put-down of the body/face that you have. I think for some peope that is true and they are simply covering up what they perceive as flaws. I think for others we simply like to look different and/or enhance what may consider already natural beauty. I don’t think make-up necessarily has to be considered any different than wearing clothes and I wear what is flattering but when I’m in what I consider my best shape, I don’t wear clothes to hide my shape but rather accentuate what I find appealing. We cannot in any way, shape or form deny that beauty is real, we can although agree that perfection (of the body) is not…….

I am 46 and will be 47 in June. I started poling at the beginning of last year–let’s just say the first day of 2013 and I have been poling ever since. I love it. I find it challenging and exhilarating at the same time. I have never been athletic or a real dancer. However, with pole, I’ve found myself trying to be both. i work out in order to be able to do the pole moves. I can do pull-ups, squats and push-ups now and I could not before. I lost around 60 pounds last year, unfortunately, I gained about 10 pounds back over the winter (Michgan winters are hard), but I am back on track to lose that 10 plus another 10. My body is still in the best shape that it has been in in 20 years. I love the motivation, perserverance and confidence that pole gives me. I hope to be poling until the body can’t move anymore. Thanks for the thread.

I don’t want to be repetitive but I do want to share my thank you for this post Veena. It came at a very important time for me as well. My day job as an attorney has taken over the last month of my life and I have suffered immensely in my pole world because of it. I have worked late, ate late and suffered the fate: gained weight. i lost strength and really I’ve felt like I’ve fallen behind. I’ve been so discouraged when I walk past a mirror that I certainly don’t want to move in front of one: all my jiggly parts show again. However, your post has helped me to remember that this is a journey. And just like any journey it has ups and downs. I’m in a down moment and have climb back up again to get to where i want to be. Once I get there, I can once again set my sight on some place else. Your freedom and desire to reveal your vulnerabilities have sparked a real conversation that will likely touch the lives of many as we engage in this post. Again, I thank you and I think tomorrow, I will remember this post as I dance around the pole at my studio and I will come home and look at me in my own mirror without the “cover of darkness.” Thank you Veena!

Stephanie, can you tell me if there a certain parts of the pole that I should take pics of to send? What is the easiest part for x-pole to view in order to verify authenticity?

I’ve been thinking about this since I first saw the question posed. I’ve answered it in so many different ways in the past but the answers always seemed to be missing something fundamental to what I consider to be truth. After thinking about it and reading the last answer, I think its the opposite of her answer. I was always the girl who would challenge by myself to become the best in the zumba class, the best in the aerobic class, the best in the step class, etc, etc. but these weren’t competitive exercises. I would get bored at some point and quit and I never wanted to just build muscle for the sake of building muscle. Now, when I went to my first pole class and I couldn’t do anything…I mean anything so I had to and continue to try to gain the strength to do these moves. Each new trick means that I have accomplished something and I never get bored because there is always a new trick or move. Then there is the whole expression thing that I get do while learn these tricks. I never get bored and I keep finding new challenges which provide me with new muscles and the best shape of my life. What is there to not be addicted to?
