I’ve had a lot of students have problems extending into the butterfly, and it is because of the weight shift. When you *just* straighten the leg, it shifts the weight distribution between the hands, but if you slide the leg up a bit before or while extending, then the distribution doesn’t change. As for the leg/hip positions, I’m not crazy about people saying one is “right” and the other wrong. I think it is more what looks good on the individual dancer.

Buying your own foam and creating a mat is not safe. Do you know if the foam is closed or open cell? What level of impact is it rated for–what weight at what height?

This comes in red or black: http://store.womackandbowman.com/product/the-burnfree-booty-short-onesie-w-bra-set-red

I wear volleyball shorts like the Olympic gals wear…they are short but don’t ride up and wick sweat away! Plus they come in lots of cute colors.

This is a strange suggestion, but it has worked for several friends, get into the move that makes you feel bad and hold a cold damp cloth between your hands. A chiropractor told me it helps you calm the body’s response. It’s so weird, but it works.

Looks a bit like the old Party Poles (not the ones made in the USA-these were designed by a British man. Their bottoms could be loosened and the whole pole could swing up and be stored across the ceiling because they remained attached at the top. They were 50mm.

Personally, mine stay shorter because they get broken a lot, but as a teacher who has been stabbed and cut when I’ve spotted students with long nails, I say short! 🙂

I did not see Olga in it. The girl playing Lubov (the girl who holds the red balloon and flies through the air) was played by Liza Temnikova. There was a man holding a Chinese (split grip) flag on a pole in a car during the part with athletes driving down the street in little red cars, but haven’t seen Olga.

I don’t really care what gals wear to class, EXCEPT when I’m spotting someone in an invert, I seriously do not like having their labia, etc. right in my face. I find that to be very disrespectful of your instructor. Especially when we go out of our way to spot you in a manner that that is professional and doesn’t cross boundaries. I always ask new students if it is ok to touch them for spotting.
Other than that, I hope you come in wearing whatever fits your mood or goal for the day, whether it be sexy, sporty, smart, sassy…& I hope I’m able to help you achieve that. -
This blog from a dancer/therapist in Canada is very helpful in understanding the hip flexors. Even though she mentions hyper mobile people, the mechanics are the same. She says “allow me to explain why stretching your hip flexors hasn’t been helping your “tight†hips. It might even be making things worse.”

The people who actually believe the lyrics of this song (strippers are all rolling in $$ and twerk 24/7) probably believe that women live to please men and pole dancing is only a tool to be sexy for men. The rest of world will see past that and know it’s just using sexy images to sell a record. I honestly don’t think that this one video is going to change anyone’s mind either way…heck, cop shows on TV have more strip club scenes than this.

Frankly to me, performing with a pole and being paid for it, is more the realm of Felix performing in Zumanity rather than using a pole at a strip club because she is required to perform tricks and a club doesn’t require that.

MemberSeptember 16, 2013 at 2:26 pm in reply to: No (former) strippers allowed in my studio competition 🙁I think most of us are in agreement that the question shouldn’t be whether or not someone can compete, just what category: professional or amateur.
A competition could easily say the requirement for the professional level is defined as receiving payment for any of these activities: teaching, performing–specifically on the pole, not just any dance style, and/or for winning a pole-specific competition. -

MemberSeptember 14, 2013 at 12:46 am in reply to: No (former) strippers allowed in my studio competition 🙁Just a thought, but if we didn’t make this art form into a competition, and just had performances (where you could still challenge yourself to hit a higher level), wouldn’t this resolve itself? I know, I know…people like to “win”, and more and more studios like to advertise their “winning stats”, so I guess the competitions aren’t going away.

MemberSeptember 6, 2013 at 9:27 pm in reply to: No (former) strippers allowed in my studio competition 🙁Ok, putting former gymnasts and ballerinas down is no better than preventing exotic dancers from competing. That just adds to the “us vs them” environment. I’ve heard a former exotic dancer say no one except strippers should teach pole…that’s not right (or nice).
I can see requiring an exotic dancer to compete in the professional level if and ONLY if she competed in a club’s pole-focused competition and was paid. Other than that, she’s should be able to compete–and in whatever category fits.
Seems like a lot more tolerance is needed in the pole world. Live and let live. -
Byrdgrrl is right…you should be arching so that you are going chest first (feet should be behind you and not under you because you are leanig into the arch) and then landing in that arch so that you are looking up at the ceiling and the bottom of the hammock is across your back where your bra line would be. That arch keeps you from landing forward on the armpits. Good luck!

I do this…one of my friends showed it to me after she saw it in a video. Can’t remember whose video it was, but if I remember, I’ll ask her.

You are welcome! I’ve seen it done with up to five people on one…crazy!! I would love to take a stab at that, cause I think I would feel like a pirate in a big fight scene on a ship lol!!!

If you want to google more cool vids, this is usually called Danish pole. 🙂

Rock climbing uses the same forearm muscles even though the hands are gripping differently. Cycling uses the same hand squeeze. Not diagnosing, but I would guess (not having see you climb) that maybe you aren’t using your abs, back (ie pulling down with your lats), and legs enough and your arms aren’t quite strong enough to do it without the rest of the body
helping, so it all falls on the hands to do the work. When we invert, the back and abs do a lot of the work, so the hands really shouldn’t be bearing all the weight in a climb or invert. Again, this is all a guess since I haven’t seen you climb. -

MemberDecember 4, 2012 at 2:20 am in reply to: Anyone live or pole dance in Los Angeles CA? I need your help 🙂Hope to see you at TCH! If your hands hurt, you could try strengthening them with grip trainers, squeeze balls, or working on aerial silks (the best training for grip and forearm endurance in my humble opinion.) Rock climbers and competitive cyclists have similar issues, so you might also google for their recommendations. Good luck!
