When I first started poling last year, I bought a 50mm since that was the standard and that was what I used in class. My hands are super tiny, but I could do spins (except reverse grab) and climbs without too much trouble. Inverted leg holds like gemini and scorpio were easy to learn on the 50mm – where I started having issues was with inverted split grips. I couldn’t aysha, and even butterflies were tough. So in December I bought my 45mm.

I love it! The scorpio/gemini hurt a little more, the hip hold took me forever and a day to get over the pain https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_geek.gif , but other than that, everything is easier for me. The trade off is well worth it – plus I don’t have the forearm pain that I used to. I’ve talked to some people that try a 45 and don’t feel a huge difference – but if you are like me, you will know the second you test it out that it’s a better fit for you physically. Good luck!

The thing that made elbow grip click for me was to make sure my tush was nice and high in my caterpillar, and my hips were far from the pole before doing it – the key is leaning back and letting your elbow grip hold you in place. When I first tried it my hips were really close to the pole and I would plummet towards the ground. This was a scary one for me but it feels so good when you get it – it feels really weird being that far from the pole, but it works. Keep trying! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_salut.gif

Hi Jorshi – I had similar issues when I started. The more you work on your chrome pole, the better it will get. It is really different from the brass, but some things will come easier for you! I usually structure my practice on my chrome pole with warming up, and then moving through practicing all my spins – that slip that chrome has is awesome for that! Then, after that, your pole will be nice and warm (with a heck of a lot more stick) – so then you can move into your holds, etc.

Do you have a space at home where you like to pole and can get into it? When I first was getting started I needed my space cleared out and my husband out of the house so I could play my music loud. I had to really work hard to get into it – then it got easier. Just keep at it – the fact that you are posting here and asking for help shows that you have the intention! Have fun! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif

Thanks, ladies – Veena, I think I might be overdoing this one. It’s so fun and I have worked on it for so long – this is probably one where easy does it. I probably don’t need to do this one 50 times a day. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_lol.gif Thank you for the stretching tips – good idea. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_pirat.gif

Yes, Sissy! It is our special move – we have to go gentle on it. Take care of those little paws! Ice really seems to be doing the trick – hopefully I will be cartwheeling it up again soon. Thank you! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif

Those have been a tough thing for me and are still a work in progress. I felt like I wasn’t in the right position too but the more I kept practicing the more comfortable I became. I think my hands are still in the same place for my aysha/ext butterfly/etc as they have been all along, but I think some new muscles are involved that have to wake up.

I FINALLY got my cartwheel this weekend and that’s a whole other ballgame – I can’t stretch my arms out to the side yet. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_lol.gif But once you get comfy with the split grip inversions you will have the stability in your shoulders that you need. Just keep trying, even though it’s frustrating. You’ll get there! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif

Thanks, Veena – I am going to work on this one some more and try your grip. My SMs are pretty controlled and I can superinvert – I think I just need to stay slow the whole time while I learn it. I think I am controlled until I get through the flippiest part, and then just let it go all to hell. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_lol.gif

I just started working on just the basic SM flip to standing – and I have a silly question. How do you know where the ground is to land? Because of where my head is, I can’t really spot it and I just end up flopping my feet to the ground blindly. I sound like a herd of buffalo and it doesn’t look too good, either. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_lol.gif

KittyKatt – WOW! I watched your video and yours looks great – it’s really flat. And your pole room is so nice and spacious, love the big mirrors! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_flower.gif

Mine is getting flatter – I’ve been playing with tilting my hips. If I have them square my back leg won’t go down – some of it is flexibility, but I think if my angle is better that will help too.

I agree with Veena – you have to find what works for you! I wish I had thought to try it from a gemini – I need to try that. Anything to avoid that ouchy hip hold – that hurts worse to me than the jade, for some reason. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_scratch.gif

I am definitely not a pro with it yet, but I usually get into it from a hip hold….I had to make sure my hip hold was super solid before I started playing with the jade. I also practice it close to the floor since I’m not 100%comfy with it yet. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/alien.gif

It’s a fun one to work on, but youch! That hip hold is a killer on the inner thigh skin. It still gets me. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_confused.gif

Amyxshi is right on – when I first tried the elbow grip, I did it right up against the pole and couldn’t figure out why I was sliding straight down. It was a little scary to lean out but when you do it’s easier! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_lol.gif

Polergirl – WOW! Great job – it took me about 4 months of consistently working on the aysha to get it. It will get steady and pretty before you know it! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheese.gif

Yay, Vickiezoo! SM is a big deal – congrats! The pain will lessen as you get more comfortable and smooth with it – make sure you have the pole on the meaty part between your shoulder and spine, right where the side of your neck curves into your shoulder. It’s hard for me to describe the placement, but if you’re in the right place it won’t hurt as much.

I think everyone starts kicking into it – have you tried practicing it from the ground? That will make you use your core to lift into it – and once you get that, you’ll be able to lift into it standing as well. GREAT JOB! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif
