to stretch, something I never did growing up and I'm paying the price… but mosty i wish i had NOT listened to what everyone told me… that i would never be any good at dancing or gymnastics because of my size and for the 5y i waited before finally make the decision to ignore everyone's opinions and buy a pole. still, better late than ever…

tks! @Elektra: yes, its a similar grip but feels a bit diferent, you dont need to be able to hold a tabletop for this but it does require a lot of strength. I love to create new tricks! have lots and lots of ideas, too bad my body can't always keep up… but i'm really pround of this one, so I'm letting my ego take the best of me and name it after myself. I'll work more on it this weekend, and take some decent pictures… already have a cool variation in mind 😉 tutorial will follow

@emotioncatcher: Im working on a combo with the marion amber, thats the perfect way to finish! thank you 🙂

yes, totally diferent context. I still mantain my opinion and agree 100% with what Empyrean said.
-
im sorry, but I dont even see it as criticism at all.. it seems like she was just stating a fact. Every body is diferent, some anatomy traits make some moves easier and others hell. I have a tough time with many moves because of my anatomy and so what? learn and adapt! having a instructor always sugar coating everything in order not to hurt the students feelings and self esteem is not helpful at all… in my opinion…

Like tarah I also opened my own studio a couple months back. if you do it that way, do it because you love it and consider it as an extra job, because at least in my experience so far, its not possible to make enough profit for a living. Small studio, small town.. you have all kinds of limitations, from geography, to space and pole limitations to narrow minded thinking people. (the word of mouth can go both ways!). I also start giving skype lessons, its an option but I recomend you get certified for that first, since you really need to know what you are doing and be able to assess what the person on the other side is capable of. good luck 🙂

I'm also saving for an x-stage and was thinking brass, but I've never tried it. I have TG gold and love it, never too grippy for my sweaty hands! but I intend to set the pole outside and it can get really hot here in summer… I've read that brass when hot may get too grippy… maybe too much? as anyone tried like that? tks.

Just want to thank Dakota Fox for the tutorial. Been working on that for the past month, still cant do the deadlift yet, but I've been noticing quite an improvement, specially this past week. I've always thought this would be impossible for me bcause of my height, now I know i'll get it eventually. The tutorial helped a lot, since I was doing a couple of things wrong, so thanks again! 🙂

First time i tried that was about 5 or 6 months ago, just did it, took the picture and never wanted to try again! until recently… at first hurt a lot but I tried to do it a couple times each practice and in a few weeks the pain was gone. still pinches a little bit when I dont get the leg at the exact place, but its fine 🙂

First of all welcome! and good choice! Pole is a great exercise and this community only makes it better. What everyone already said, never too old to start, specially when you already have some upper body strength. I started at 27, on my own, in terrible shape, no exercise in over 10 years (and not much before that either to be honest). Many here are self taugh also and Veena's lessons are a great way to get you started, so get a pole and good luck on your journey! 🙂

Thank you so much Elektra! 🙂 I hope you are right… it does make sense, I try to believe and keep positive.. there was a time I did, I started from a lunge also but, althought slowly, there was some progress from time to time.. now… some days just feels hopeless. I think I've tried everything at this point. well, everything I could on my own… cant affort a maseuse either.. I'm less than a yoga brick from the floor for months now, and no matter what I do or how I do it, cant go any lower… maybe its time to start saving for professional help. Its not just because of how I feel compared with other polers (thats bad enough..) but since I started teaching.. everytime I have to explain i cant do a split I want to crawl into a hole and cry myself to oblivion… such a bad exemple.. cant help to feel a failure and fraud somehow… anyway… happy stretching 😉

1y 4 months and counting… I'm so frustrated with it that I miss words to express… sigh… but also so relieved to read that I'm not the only one pass the 1year mark.. I was starting to believe my hamstrings were hopelessly atrofied…. still not sure, but at least this gave a little bit of hope…!

So many good advices! thank you! I'll let you know how it went 🙂
-
Thank you both so much for the advice! Yes, I'll need to focus on keeping it very simple so everyone can participate… its already a complicated situation, and I know I wont be able to assess everyone properly… lets hope I can still make it fun even without alcohol… 🙂

I have scoliosis also and thats not a problem, if anything, pole dancing actually helped improve my posture. about the muscle, well.. I understand your concern, I'm very tall and big bonned,.my arms, shoulders and upper back got a lot bigger, so much I had to replace most my tight t-shirts and jackets, still I never looked better! Sure, muscle doesnt appeal to everyone, but only matters how you feel about it.

I consider myself more of a pole trickster instead of a pole dancer but I think I understand your question. trying to combine music with tricks and dance used to be a nightmare. Im not a natural dancer, dancing was just another trick for me, so I was always analyzing every movement to fit the rythim… the results were far from good… so finally I learned not to over think it.
First you need to be confortable with what you are doing, its dificult to look graceful when you are still struggling to perform the move/spin. Moves like climbs dont have to be performed during "less" exciting moments in a song, you can dance your way up the pole as you can use pauses in the music to hold poses or exagerate them. It's more a feeling not an equation.
of course thats easier said than done… takes a lot of practice when you dont have it naturally. just dance to a song that drives you, dont think about where are you going to perform what, just let it happen. some things will work well, others may not so much at first, and there's where practice and analysing come in to fix the little things. happy poling 🙂

A friend sent me this, great songs for pole 😉

Thank you! I tried to do the best I could with what I had, always room for improvement in time 🙂 @emotioncatcher: yes! I used to teach at home, not much changed, but its good to have a space dedicated just for that. 🙂

thanks for the tips! I've never put on a fake eyelash in my life, now at least I know how to do it 😉

remi, remi layback, remi extreme by order of increase pain..
knee hold, specially the open knees variation
no hands cradle
embow grip shoulder mount/dismount and all the embraces (elbow grip aysha dont bother me at all)
last but not least, no hands superman aka superpain (indeed…!)
I eventually got over the pain from superman, marley and scorpio, but i still remember quite well how hard it was… supose with enough practice the others will stop hurting as well…

MemberJanuary 29, 2012 at 4:00 am in reply to: Hello from Amsterdam 🙂 with a toning question too xxI used to be an obese child (weighted almost as much at 8y old as I do now) I grew out of it.. .literally.. and went through an eating disorder on my late teens. Didnt do any exercise for 10y before I started pole dancing (and not much before that either to be honest). so… I was just skin and bone, no muscle at all! I stuggled to lift a 10kg bag of dog food! It was hard at first.. not going to lie, very very hard, but worth it. I started seeing small results after just a month and so far I've gained over 5kg (even though I look skinnier than before). My advice, dont give up! If you already had the strenght to loose that much weight I think you will get the body you aspire, just be prepared to work really hard for it! Happy poling 🙂
