Taliachild – yes I think people in Oz are a lot more laid back. When I mention pole to the Americans I know here, they all seem pretty shocked! From what I’ve read on here, people in the US tend to associate “pole” with “stripping” and poles are referred to as “stripper poles” over there (correct me if I’m wrong, those of you in the US!) Oh, and I’m probably about your MIL’s age – 57 ;-))

High pitched screaming really really annoys me.  Shouting, not so much, but the ear-splitting screeching?  Sooooooo annoying – especially, as others have said, when you can't hear the music.

Hope both your pole and your foster-dog are OK 😉

My Mum fostered a dog recently – a (pregnant – rescued from a puppy farm) dog, which she cared for for 5 months, as well as caring for the puppy for a couple of months.

I think everyone probably has bad pole days. I’m horrified that you thought it might be your age!
I’m 57. I work full time. I pole twice a week at the moment, for an hour each. A few months back, I was doing 2 hours of pole on one day, and an hour’s stretch class followed by an hour of pole on another day. A couple of years ago I was doing some form of exercise 6 x hours per week (flex, pole, pilates, Jungle Body, pole, Xtend Barre).
I almost never eat junk food or drink soda.

I like to have at least one pole session on visits back to the UK, otherwise I lose strength and the callouses disappear from my hands 😉

Do you have garage sales/yard sales or local council collections in your area? (anything where people put stuff they don’t want, out the front of their house? We have a council rubbish collection once or twice a year when people do this. Other people can help themselves to whatever’s there, before the council starts collecting. (I picked up a couple of mirrors this way – one of them was a bathroom mirror which the people didn’t need as they’d had their bathroom renovated. I know at least one person who furnished their whole house this way!

Wow – thanks heaps for all the responses 🙂 which heels are good for “learners”? I bought a pair of Pleasers (the ones which the shop owner said are good for learning in. Not sure of the style number but they have clear heels, platform and straps. I think they’re 6″ heels – will have to check!

Oh and yes, there is provision for practice time – which I am thinking of doing in the near future.

Thanks for the response 🙂 Yes we are advised to wear shoes with an ankle strap – 🙂 I don’t think there’s any possibility of changing the instructors’ minds, but although the majority wear heels, it’s by no means mpulsory and there is no pressure 😉 I do think heels look good though. Would like to get to the stage where I can dance equally well (or badly haha!) in either.

I am bigger than a DD cup.  I wear the Cleo "Jude" bra by Panache which is meant as a t-shirt bra.  It has moulded cups and a low centre front.  I have no problem at all with the "girls" escaping when I invert.  It comes in lots of different colours, too 🙂 They seem to release a new colourway about every 6 months.I wear a crop top over it.

Great idea 🙂 could either use words, i.e. names of the poses/moves etc. – or pictures – or both. Years ago I saw a system for choreographing ballet moves which was done on rows of parallel lines (a bit like a music score) can’t renember what it was called though.

I have been using Zoraya’s gripgloves, but now the weather in Perth is warming up, I am finding that my hands get sweaty inside the gloves so I end up slipping. Am going to try out various products (tite grip, dry hands, itac, shave cream, etc to see what works best.

Age is just a number! I was over 50 when I started my pole journey, having done zero exercise for years. No way am I giving up pole – it’s way too much fun. I plan to keep poling for as long as I can.

I echo what everyone else has said 🙂 I started with zero strength, and now my instructors are telling me “you are strong enough to do this”. Another thought – can you try a different instructor? I’ve had the experience of walking out in tears after lessons with one instructor at the studio I go to. Now I just won’t go to her classes. Luckily there are other instructors I can learn from, and I nearly always come out smiling after their lessons.

I have been poling for about 2.5 years. I did a 6 week silks course about 3 months ago. For me, I am glad I had experience on spinny pole as I think that helped me cope with the silks spinning around 😉 I struggled with getting the silks to behave, but I gained *lots* of upper body strength from silks. I sucked at doing the knots and foot locks but didn’t have a problem with inverting 😉 i want to try Lyra too, though I’ve seen the damage it can di to your hands!

Take up Pilates 🙂 i started doing Pilates a few months ago….my instructor is always saying to us “motion is lotion” – in other words, you have to keep your joints moving in order to keep them lubricated and prevent them from stiffening up.

….and I second what HotelChick said. I am a survivor of abuse, still learning to live in my body (rather than in my head, with my body being a separate thing)

I have suffered from depression since my mid-teens, if not earlier (i am now 56.) I started poling after a particularly bad bout of depression. After I got through it, I decided I would take up poling (something I had wanted to try for several years, after I saw a demo of it, when I thought it looked like fun). Poling has changed my life for the better! The music part definitely helps.
