lol, I love what you said about webmaster’s posts because it’s so true and for me, so appreciated! I love people who are direct in their answers https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif

Uh oh, it sounds like you may have been dupped into purchasing a pole that isn’t a true X-pole. I was never instructed to wipe off any polish on mine and I’ve used rubbing alcohol on my chrome X pole without any of the reactions you are describing. Did you buy it from a licensed distributor?

Natalie,
I’m sorry to hear about your health problems, it most certainly does sound unfair and miserable https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_sad.gif
I think not having a diagnosis is the worst part. It’s frustrating to have doctors basically tell you they don’t know what it is and therefore can’t do anything. I have had similarly random and weird conditions before where my arms swelled up for no reason, etc, so I really do feel for you. The only advice I can give you is to actively research your symptoms on the internet and try to find answers for yourself. The health care system can fail you and the more ideas, possibilities, and knowledge you have going into the doctor’s office, the better off you are. Push for answers, ask questions whenever something doesn’t make sense, and refuse to leave without some improvement or course of action. If traditional medicine doesn’t seem to help it may be a good idea to turn to alternative medicine in a while. I myself am a bit weary of it but acupuncture has done marvels for many. My thought are with you.Fleur

What video did you send?!?! I haven’t seen it!

I’m thinking about it…but I’m pretty intimidated because I’ve seen some of the dancers in California and they are kind of amazing!

When I don’t feel that my audience will appreciate learning that I pole dance for fitness, I say this: "I do aerial acrobatics, you know like aerial silks, trapeze, circus stuff".

I’ve done this combo before but am not the most comfortable with it. The only tip I can give you is to try to grab the pole as high up as you can before flipping into superman, if your hand is too close to your bum, it’s very difficult to hold.

For superman fall, I think of it as two steps: get into a hip hold, drop the legs into scorpio. Superman to dove is tricky, you have to either get your top arm up the pole or let your legs slide down a bit to be able to reach back (unless you have crazy back flexibility) and the twisting of the arm that reaches around is hard to figure out at first but keep in mind you are not going to reach across yourself with the second hand, it needs to grip the pole by going behind you. I say this because everyone’s first instinct is to reach across themselves to get the pole and it’s impossible! (Took me a while to get it!)

If you are getting bruises along your ribcage, that tells me you are throwing yourself into your invert instead of going upside down in a controlled manner using the abs and arm strength. You got lucky a few times and managed to hook the pole to get upside down BUT now it isn’t working because you don’t really have the strength built up yet to be able to do it consistently. Not to worry, with time your strength will increase and you’ll be inverting like no one’s business! But until you get to that point I would recommend doing some strengthening exercises and inversion preparation moves instead of throwing yourself into it and risking injury. Check out the thread titled "Am I ready for an inversion?" under pole moves in the forum, it will be at the top of the page.

That’s awesome glitter!!! Sometimes having an audience really gets you pumped up and you can do more than usual. In fact, psychology classes will tell you that if you are not good at something (or rather if you do not feel that you are good at it) you will do worse with an audience. BUT if it is a skill you excell at, you will do better with an audience! Well done!
Joel, how cool that you two got to meet!!!

Welcome! You won’t regret your purchase…well unless it’s a peekaboo pole! Enjoy Veena’s lessons and post your progress! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif

BTW, it is typical for beginners to expend more calories than advanced students. The reason? They are less efficient in their movements so they struggle and work a bit more. As you get more experienced, you learn to conserve your energy and perform moves in the most efficient manner possible. Now you know how those crazy good polers do it without looking flushed! (well, not quite https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif )
Alena, how COOL that you do that! Love the idea of documenting the athleticism involved in poling https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif

1) Most studios, clubs, venues etc. use 50mm poles so I personally think it’s a good idea to start on a 50mm. It would be harder to start on 45mm and then haev to adjust to 50mm. I think you made a perfectly good choice https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif
2) I think beginners benefit immensely from taking classes. You will be monitered for proper form and technique, thereby preventing injury and you will have your classmates to cheer you on and encourage you (and I think in those first few weeks of poling we all need that while we’re building strength and finding our dance legs!). Remember, they will all be beginners too so you’re in it together! It’s not a competition so even if you aren’t strong to start out with, just go at your own pace and reach for your personal fitness goals https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif

Sascha,
You are a fantastic dancer and beyond that, you are a beautiful woman and such an open, giving person, you really should not be so down on yourself! Picking up choreography is a SKILL, one that is learned. It will take some time but I promise you that the more you try to pick up routines quickly, the better you get at it! I enjoy all the videos you make and think you are fantastic! Please don’t be down on yourself https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_sad.gif

I wouldn’t say that stretching should be done every day but I would say that stretching should be done directly after working out. Stretching the muscle groups you worked on while they are warm is more effective and may reduce soreness the next day. Stretching when you are sore can also alleviate discomfort and yes, if you are very sore it is VERY uncomfortable (ever tried a foam roller on your sore quads? OMG death!). I would encourage you to stretch but be careful and listen to your body but chances are you won’t overstretch if you are very sore.

Yay Veena! I am so glad you were able to see someone who was willing to help!!! I still can’t believe the nerve of that guy…I’m really happy for you that you have a plan of action and a positive outlook https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif
Here’s my update: My general doctor told me she isn’t trained to deal with athletes because 95% of her patients are sedentary so she didn’t feel like she could give me a specific diagnosis which is why she referred me to an orthopedist. Now THAT"s a good doctor! She’ll admit when she can’t help and send me to someone who can! She said that she is so happy to see a young person who is exercising and taking care of their health so she wants to make sure I don’t get a serious injury and end up having to quit! Have I mentioned she’s awesome? I got Xrays just to make sure there is nothing wrong structurally. Anyway, no definite diagnosis yet but I’ve made an appointment with the orthopedist (in 2 weeks), my personal guess is that I irritated the bursa because of the location and weird sensation of hot an cold. Either that or I’ve pinched a nerve? I have no shooting pain, no exact location of pain, just an ‘off’ feeling and a weird hot/cold sensation. Azzwoo, any feedback on this?
Practice safe poling and don’t overdo it!!!Let’s stay fit and healthy https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif

Great job Roxey https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif It’s so exciting to get new moves!

For forearm grip your body will be to the side of the pole and you will be gripping more in the armpit. It is pretty much impossible to do it keeping the pole in the center of your body. Releasing both legs off the pole in a split grip is much harder than forearm or elbow grip, try to master those first.
