What type of EDS do you have? I suspect I have type 2 or 3. I am waiting for my dr appt. in November to be sure. I have neurally mediated hypotension and postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome and I’ve read that EDS and NMH can be linked. I black out several times a day when I stand up and have chronic fatigue syndrome. I am also very flexible, my fingers and toes bend backwards and my thumbs can touch my forearms. Luckily I don’t have dislocations but I do have very stretchy skin. Be careful girl! Maybe you need to wear a brace while you are stretching…

Hey everyone! I won’t be doing any workshops (just did becca butcher’s and Kyra + Marlo’s doubles workshop at EMW – you can’t go wrong for $40). I will be at the competition though. In fact I have an extra ticket if anyone still needs one. Let me know if any of you are interested. Since I live an hour away, I’ll be driving there and back that day.

I tried the snow white on again last night and the skirt is really roomy. The top is tightn me but I have implants so most tops are a tough fit on me anyway. The arm cuffs fit. I didn’t realize you aren’t supposed to put them over your biceps. they go over the elbow according to the picture and they fit just fine. I’d say the cups in the top are a B-C.

I was lucky enough to have front row seats! I knew enough to book a workshop with her prior to her win and I’m so glad I did! She taught us all her tricks and such from her performance including the amazing fan kick to scorpio drop – you need a wierd inside arm grip to pull it off and I’ve never used it before. She was humble and had no airs about her, she really just had a pure and innocent spirit about her. She was very loving with the class and fun to work with! She’s a lot smaller than I thought she’d be from her videos! Pure muscle from head to toe! And the workshops was, get this, only 40 bucks!!! Yeah for the PFA! The whole event was much cheaper than any uspdf related activity! They ENCOURAGED us to film and post! I had front row seats for only 45 and like I said, affordable workshops! The whole weekend rocked and the energy of the whole event felt so nice!!! Becca was the highlight though with her insane performance. I’ve been rooting for her for years b/c she’s competed in Pole Superstar and USPDF with no recognition. Her Amateur performance in NYC this past March for USPDF was incredible but again, no prize, so she totally deserved this win! The pirate costume will be more expensive to ship because of the hat which is fairly large although it is light. I’d say the pirate costume is the least ‘small’ of the three I have. The Marine one is stretchy but when I tried it on it was smaller and shorter than I expected. I’m a size 2-4 US sizes. The Snow White costume is a no go for me b/c the arm cuffs don’t fit me being muscular and having thicker arms. The rest of the snow white costume fits though and the skirt is pretty roomy. But they all say size small on the tags – US small and Pheonix’s size chart is pretty accurate! The marine costume to me seems to be an extra-small! Hope this helps!

When I was instructing at a local studio, the pay was $12 per hour plus $1 per student. Sometimes only one student showed up so I made a whopping $13 per hour essentially for a private lesson. Totally sucked but since I have a professional full time job with a great salary I did it for the love of it. We were strictly prohibited from discussing salary with anyone else on staff. I think some of the others made $10 per hour and some of the others made more if they had a cert when hired. When I began I had no fitness credentials but did earn an ACE group fitness and pole position fitness cert. I no longer work there and the pay is one of the reasons. I taught the advanced classes and I spent alot of my own time and money preparing myself to teach that level. The studios (Xposefitness.com) in my near local area charge between $8-$11 per 50 minute class. Sometimes you can buy a class for closer to $7 buck if you get a special. As a result, instructor pay is very low. I hear the Xpose girls make closer to $20 or more per hour because they have a lot of volume and the instructors earn more if they have more students.

Hey pp15171! I would expect that a pole teacher should be able to do floor work, one-handed spins, combination spins, CKRs, CARs, climbs, basic inverts, knee hangs, superman, catepillar climb – you get the idea. No need to do the spatchcock or death lay!
Katana, the trainings will be on weekends because I work full time during the week. You would take the written exam and submit videos after you returned home.

My other thought is the protection of thier jobs but the performers are women and men who work there – whether its an instructor, owner or front desk. If they worked there, they are allowed to compete.
When I said protect their jobs, I meant their other jobs, not the ones at the studio. I would get fired from my full-time professional job for pole dancing in public and so would many other girls I know. Hey Lou, I used to work at one of the studios in Maryland that you probably contacted. I know the owner had felt that the other local studios resented her opening up. It seems to me like there is bad blood between a lot of studios because they ‘steal’ business from one another. Perhaps this is one of the reasons you are having trouble getting them to join in? Their relationships just aren’t friendly at all. It’s just all bad politics.
Another factor may be that a lot of students who come to pole class enjoy the privacy of having no men present and/or they may actually need it to protect their jobs?? There is one dancer at my old studio who is FANTASTIC, I mean she could easily go pro. We’ve tried over and over to get her to compete and she refuses. She just doesn’t want to put herself out there.
What if you made this the Maryland Pole Dancing Championship or the DelMarVa Championships? Each competitor could ‘represent’ a studio??

Speaking of the iron X, Veena are you lifting into it or are you coming out of an inversion to go into it? I’ve been trying it both ways. Inversion to Iron X works better for me, I have a hard time getting the lift from standing.

I call it the lifted reverse hook to knee hang. I wonder what the "official" name is?? You can end on either knee depending on if you want to switch legs at the end or not. It’s such a wow trick, everyone loves it. Here’s my post for making your own pole. Permanent would be the only option for this one. YOu could change the size, pole material, or make it static only. This particular post is for making a 38 mm brass spinny. I have links to the websites where I purchased materials. I think the whole shebang cost me under $250.

They have very different teaching styles. Pantera is very professional and all about building strength. She didn’t show me a lot of tricks, we focused on slow, controlled movement and core building. Very helpful!! Sarah was silly and fun and was open to teaching anything the crowd wanted. They are both so immensly talented on the pole!! You guys are going to have a great time!! Jealous!

Hi girl, Lord to be so young!! I’m 39 and was teaching advanced pole 3 times a week plus one hour yoga and two hours chair dance. I was pretty exhausted and sore too. I learned to listen to my body and I asked for less hours (pay was crap) as I have a full time professional job and all that strain on my body wasn’t worth it to me. I noticed you wrote that you eat this: "cereal, ramen noodles and frozen pizzas". That’s a whole lot of non-nutritious carbs going down!! Where are your fruit, veggies and whole grains?? Plus PROTEIN and IRON!!! You may indeed have an iron deficiency!! I do/did too. Do you eat any red meat? I find meat pretty gross so my doctor told me to take Feosol supplements – you can get them at the drug store. A lack of iron = a lack of energy because you won’t have the red blood cells to carry needed oxygen around your body! It also sounds like you need to let your body rest and heal in between workouts. Rest and recovery is just as important as exercise. Give yourself a day in between intense workouts. Maybe you could change your teaching schedule? Three hours in a row Friday night followed by a Saturday shift (I had the same schedule) is just wrong for your body. You are the instructor and so you are an essential piece of that studio. Without your body in good healthy condition, class is not enjoyable for you. Why suffer?? It also may not be enjoyable for your students when they pick up on the fact that you are tired and in pain and would rather be in bed.
Also, as for lactic acid, research does not show a link between that and soreness. Read here: http://judoinfo.com/soreness.htm. The soreness you feel is most likely muscle cell damage and inflammation especially if you are doing a lot of the eccentric work that we most of us do in pole (think slowly releasing back down from a shoulder mount). For me, one of the best things I can do when I feel this soreness is light exercise or gentle yoga. I’ll take the dogs for a walk, do some sun salutations, jump on my rebounder or hula for a bit. Yelena, before your feet leave the ground you have to tilt your butt past your head. Do you see how I tilted my butt almost all the way toward the pole yet my head and elbows are further away? That tilt is key.
Before ever touching a pole I did A LOT of yoga. There is an elbow stand in yoga that is almost the exact same thing. I had worked on that ages ago, but could just barely get my feet up and then I’d topple over. I think that practice helped me nail it in the pole room. Here is a tutorial for a yoga elbowstand that you might like to use to practice. Once you can do it in the way they do it in the video (bending the knees to lift the legs) you can work on lifting your unbent legs.

It isn’t easy and it is really going to depend on your core strength. For mine, I don’t touch the poles with my hands and your legs need to open and rise sideways. You can practice against a wall for safety and have a friend spot you and assist your lift.
