Yay I got the shouldermount at long last, have been practising loads now my shoulder is very painful, have to rest it for a bit. Am kicking up into it at the mo, but hopefully with more practise it wil look nicer. Soo happy just wanted to share, does anyone have any tips??? 🐱 🐱

Yay, Vickiezoo! SM is a big deal - congrats! The pain will lessen as you get more comfortable and smooth with it - make sure you have the pole on the meaty part between your shoulder and spine, right where the side of your neck curves into your shoulder. It's hard for me to describe the placement, but if you're in the right place it won't hurt as much. I think everyone starts kicking into it - have you tried practicing it from the ground? That will make you use your core to lift into it - and once you get that, you'll be able to lift into it standing as well. GREAT JOB! 🥂

Congrats! I still have to kick, but only to get the momentum going. Probably the 2nd half of my SM is actual lift, but I can't do an all-out dead lift yet. I still can't do it from the floor - I think it's harder that way, so if you can do it, you're doing great. 😀

just curious, to those who are kicking into the shouldermount: do you also kick into the basic invert? a really good way to build up strength for the shouldermount is to do the reverse shouldermount-- from an invert into a SM.

Congrats! 🙂 Your core will get stronger and you'll be able to do it without kicking soon, I'm sure. Just wondering which grip you're using though? I started learning with the grip Veena uses (outside hand with thumb facing upwards) and I found I needed a lot less momentum to get into the SM because you can use your outside arm to pull yourself up and not just 'inwards' like with the cupped grip.
Thanks guys, Love the support everyone gives each other on here its fab, Amyxshi I can lift into basic invert without kicking, unless am knackered lol! Solya I use a SM grip that is called respect grip on the pole junkies website. I SM using my right shoulder, so my right hand is cupped behind pole and left hand opposing so its able to pull me up, if that makes sense. Have had to give it a rest for a couple of days cos am a bit sore. 🐱 🐱

the reason why i ask whether or not people are kicking into the SM is because i don't see why it's dangerous to kick into an invert and NOT dangerous to kick into a SM! sorry but it's just really easy to hurt yourself when you kick into anything. 😈 i dont mean to be a stick in the mud but it's not as important to get tricks as it is to stay SAFE and NOT INJURED! i would suggest that you work on going from a regular invert into a controlled shoulder dismount down to the floor... it's the same principle that strength-trainers use, and it's called doing "negatives"-- see http://www.healthandfitnessadvice.com/fitness-tips/how-to-do-a-pull-up-when-you-can-not-do-a-pull-up.htmlfor some more info on negatives as they apply to pull ups. you can also go from an invert into a SM dismount and go back up into a regular invert for practice. try doing different grips, as seen here: http://www.triagedesign.co.uk/wikipole/index.php5?title=Shoulder_Mount. the cupped grip is scary if you are kicking because there is nothing to keep you from falling if you are not applying constant force-- and it is also a very bicep-oriented grip-- but i've heard pantera says that if you can't do a SM with the cupped grip you shouldn't be doing one-- primarily because a lot of people use the other grips (like the respect grip) as a "crutch" to be able to kick into them. i've tried the double forward cupped grip, and i found it is significantly easier (for me) than using the cupped-- because it uses much more back and chest muscles. so experiement a little and see if maybe there isn't another grip that is better for your body's strenghts. finally, when you do SM training-- do yourself a favor and don't begin it with your body vertical. start leaning backwards, with your shoulder perpendicular to the pole-- the closer that yuor body is to horizontal, the easier it is.

While we are on the topic of SMs, what do you girls do about sweaty neck/shoulder/hair? In winter, it's not a big deal, but with the weather warming up I've been having to wipe up sweat before I can get a grip for the SM. How do all the big names manage to do shoulder mounts and SM stalls mid routine?
It has to be all about leverage and using enough to hold yourself on the pole, because I have seen folks do it in slippery clothes like hoodies and t-shirts, too. Clothes that allow no skin contact whatsoever with the pole. Mind you, I don't do it that way, at least not yet, but I've certainly seen others!!
congrats, thats a tough one! im working on the aerial sm right now...the way it's going hopefully i will be able to do it before i'm 80, ughhh!!!

How do all the big names manage to do shoulder mounts and SM stalls mid routine? i've done the SM with sweaty shoulders... you have to have a good grip with your hands and be able to keep your elbows locked and bent-- you're using the strength of your bent arms to keep your shoulder from slipping down the pole, if that makes any sense.
Yes, it makes perfect sense. I can SM with a t-shirt on, so I think I can get use to SMing with sweating shoulders. Thanks.

One of the things that a lot of people forget to do when first learning the shoulder mount is breathe 🙂 I know it sounds silly but I used to do it as well. I was always strong enough to do the SM but would always hold my breath as I would try to go up. Didn't even realize I was doing it until a teacher pointed it out and said "um your holding your breath...I bet if you would just breathe you would actually get it" - who knew - she was right - haha...too bad it took me 4 months to have someone point that out to me lol

hey all ! i just have to chime in here.... i got a SM for the very first time last night. happy to say no kicking. for me, all i needed was to lower my hand position a bit 🙂 now..... what the heck do i DO with it !!! lol ! jayjay congrats! 👍 and from a SM you caaaaan..... go into an inverted thigh hold into anything (superman, scorpio, gemini) go into an inverted crucifix into anything go into a brass monkey into a layout, pole sit, etc do a bouncing SM down the pole do a prance or the wavy legs or the superinvert or the pole splits (hook one ankle let the other one out behind you) do a SM somersault rollover back to the floor (to standing or landing a split) or back into a sit ....i'm sure there are others that i'm not thinking of!
...you can also -do a reverse shoulder mount but flirt your legs down -do a reverse SM with peep show legs...that looks REALLY flirty/cute - go into a caterpillar or caterpillar climb ...I'm sure there is a ton more we are forgetting 🙂
Personally, I think the SM invert is "prettier" than a traditional invert, too, and it's such an impressive display of strength/coordination/control!! If ya got it, use it! Flaunt it! 🥂 🥂 🥂 🥂 🥂
