I just got the Dara Torres resistance stretching DVD and I have to say I am very impressed with it. It is professionally produced and the names of the muscles are discussed frequently during the descriptions. It is easier to follow than the Bob Cooley DVD and more instruction is given so that you can execute the stretch correctly. It even has a chapter for tight hamstrings. I got a used copy off Amazon for $16 with free shipping. It also came with a bonus DVD called 'training with Dara Torres'. Here is a link to the website: http://www.innovativebodysolutions.com/ onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; My hamstrings are such a trouble area for my lately. It the focus of most of my stretching lately.
Has any one used yoga for flexibility and splits and seen major results?
Some of you are really exited by this resistance stretching method. But a lot just wrote that they bought to book or dvd. So who of you, who did not already replied that this works out for you, had more succes with this method and who of you find this equal to the normal streching or less effective? And what did you buy? The book ofBob Cooley or the DVD of Dara Torres? I could not find very much on the internet, so I would like to know if this would really help me, or if it would be a waste of money Thank you girls! Greetings from an complete unflexible, but dreaming and hoping girl! 🙂
Hey Proudyoundlady, I recommend the Dara Torres DVD. It is much more explicit in it's description of the stretches. Plus there are two DVDs. One explains and demostrates the stretches in detail, the other is of Dara Torres taking you through the 20 minute stretch workout. All in all I think resistance stretching is a fantastic technique. I went to one of their workshops today near DC. We reviewed the 16 stretches and at the end I was stretched by one of the trainers that stretched Dara and it was some of the deepest stretching I've ever felt. Im sold on the method. Try it!
Hey everyone, I bought this book when this post first came along but haven't used it much as I've had some injuries and not been very motivated through winter! Anyways - my problem areas are my adductors and hamstrings - which stretches out of the book would you all recommend for these areas? I don't like that it doesn't tell you in the book - you kind of have to guess lol. I had an adductor injury in late Dec so it's just getting back to stretching it again as I've lost a lot of flexibility that I used to have 🙁 Any ideas? -x-x-
Using only Energy Series One, I'd say that for the medial hamstring, stretch #9 Central Leg Extension on page 104-105 would be great. I'd also include the opposing muscle group b/c the extent to which you can lengthen the hamstring depends on quads ability to lengthen and contract. So use stretch # 5 Thigh Stretch at Wall pg 96 for that. I'd say that #1 Knee to Forehead pg. 88 & #6 Wide Legged Forward Bend pg. 98 would be great as well. #14 Lotus at the Wall on pg 114 would be great for adductors. Do Crossover Leg Extension #13 for the abductors.
Thanks for that hun, I'll try all of those in my stretching session tomorrow night! It's such a slow process after an injury - even though it was only a mild one! - I feel like I'll never be flexible 🙁 I really noticed it in last weeks lesson too when we learnt a new trick - Side V I think Wiki calls it, could hardly make a V shape at all!! I'll let you know how it goes! 🙂 -x-
Angel, how awesome you went to a stretching workshop, I'm so glad you liked it! I have been doing this consistently for a while now and I am amazed at the results. So much of my stiffness has gone away, I gain and keep more flexibility every day. And just the other day I actually got within 2" of a split on my BAD side, which has been bound up with scar tissue for 18 years! So, I am a serious believer!
I sooo want to try a workshop in LA...you would think there would be more here being the land of yoga and bendie people and all lol 😀 ...but I am having a hard time finding anything other than this... http://www.flexiblestrength.com/rfst-programs/resistance-stretching-classes.html and there are only classes on Wed & Sunday... anyone know of anywhere else in the LA area that might have any workshops?

Angel! Score! Thank you for posting this. Wow, I really want to get certified in this method. Level I in Mission Viejo in April, hmmmmm...... 🙂

Thanks Ange 😀 l...not really that close...but I would go there for a workshop!...right now it only seems like they have certifications going on though...and my non bendy/stretchy self needs workshops LOL
Hey Veruca, you'd be fine with the video. It shows you all the stretches we covered in class. You'd need it anyway after the workshop to remember the stretches! http://www.innovativebodysolutions.com/store/dvds/dara-torres-dvd.html You could get it on Amazon too. That's where I found mine. Otter - There was an intern in our workshop who took the level 1 workshop. One of her clients was in the stretching workshop with me and he told me that he pays her $100/hour to stretch him. He had bought a pack of five stretch sessions. Not a bad hourly rate! So go for it, get certified!
Here it is, my proof that resistance stretching works. I've been working on getting a split for 8 months using Alethea's methods. I added resistance stretching this winter, and have progressed rapidly. Tonight, I nailed it. 🥂 Really, just can't say enough about how great I think this method is.
Hey guys! I don't want to put a damper on the happy vibes, and actually I'd love to get in on this thing...but I have some concerns. When I was in Fitness Trainer's class, we learned all about muscles and what happens when you damage them or abuse them, what they can and can not do...one of the biggest examples that was explained to me was when guys do the weight lifting thing, and get all manly and don't know what they're doing, they will often lift weights that are too heavy for them. They get into the "lifted" position, and then let the weight drop as they resist the gravity of the weight, forcing their muscle to try as hard as it can. This causes large amounts of tearing within the muscle (worse than if you are stretching normally), and even severe muscle damage, and lumpiness. 😳 So, from the explanations I've heard, I have concerns that Resistance stretching is the same...or perhaps similar! I wouldn't want anyone to get injured this way, and I wouldn't want to go into this thing blind and just "Yaaaaayyy! Everyone says it's awesome!" 🙄 I'm really cautious, generally, especially when things fly in the face of what I've been taught for so long. So, I'm not saying it's not awesome, I'm not saying stop doing it...I was just wondering if anyone had a way to alleviate my concerns? I'd love to get the DVD and give it a shot! 🤸
WOO HOO!! Congrats! 🥂 ☀️
Hey Runemist, Take a look at this link. You can watch a preview of the Dara Torres DVD that explains nicely how and why this works. http://www.innovativebodysolutions.com/store/dvds/dara-torres-dvd.html This method is actually extremely safe because, by contracting the muscle while you stretch it, you are activating the fibers, making it very difficult to get hurt. These stretches are not extreme, they feel good on your body, and they leave you feeling loose and floaty the next day--not rebound tight. It's great that you voiced concerns, everyone should always investigate new things thoroughly and be sure it's right for them! 🙂
Ottorsocks.....how often/how long did you stretch? Did you do the complete series?
Hi Chemmie, Take a look at my blog post from Dec where I talk about the one on one session I did. From that, I was told to focus on: #1 knee to forehead #6 wide leg forward bend #9 central leg extension #10 hip flexor (gotta keep em loose!) #13 crossover leg extension #14 lotus I actually don't do 9 or 13 very often as I've had a bicep injury, making it hard to use my arms appropriately to pull on my leg. #6 is my fave and the one I can visibly see the most progress in. I've been doing the stretches about 3x a week, although some weeks only once. I need to be more diligent, but I do find I don't go backwards in between sessions--I seem to keep the gains from the last time. I like to do it in front of the TV so will often stretch for an hour but you don't have to do it that long at all. The trainer I worked with said the more reps you can do a day, the better. So while the book says 6 - 8, she does upwards of 15 reps and more than once a day if she can.
Thanks! I vaguely remember that now. I have been trying to incorporate many of those after my Zumba class. I really should start doing them more.

I just placed a hold on it at my local library. Should have it in 3-5 days. Oooh, I hope this works because I'm the stiffest girl in my pole class (hee hee). Thanks for the tip!
I juts placed this on hold at one of the local libraries. I can't wait to get it!
I just ordered the Dara Torres DVD!! I can't wait to get it! I've been stretching for the past few months and I really haven't seen much improvement in my flexibility at all! Hopefully this will help!! Thank you to everyone who recommended this, I hope it helps!
OMG I just ordered this book...can't wait to work on my spilts thanks otter!!! 🥂 🥂
My book arrived and I did the stretches, I could feel myself loosening up, but that split still ain't happening anytime soon! I heard of this method years ago and have been wanting to try it, my sports massage therapist does PNF stretches with me but I didn't know how to do that unassisted. There are some that I really don't get at all, so maybe I should schedule a session at Cooley hdqtrs, seeing as how they're nearby in Boston!
