Hmmm... I've kinda been combining some of these with my own stretches and none of them appear too radically different... we'll see... so far I'm disappointed. This guy is wayyy out there... I would like someone more scientific to help write this.. at least put the names of the muscle groups in for christ sake...
I'm so happy that this is turning out to be useful for so many people! 😀 Here's my update: I've been doing the stretches a few times a week for the past two weeks. Noticing big gains in everyday flexibility. Yesterday my jade was as close to a split as I have ever gotten, which was super exciting. The big news though is this: Bob Cooley has his home studio in Massachusetts. He also has one out here in NorCal, called Stretchworks, run by two of his disciples. One of them does private sessions out of an office very close to my house. So next week, on December 2, I have a 90 minute private resistance stretching session scheduled! She said that at first she will do assisted stretching with me to assess my flexibility and my limitations from my old hammie injury. And then, we will work to develop a home program that will specifically target the moves I seek to be able to do well. WOOHOO!!!! 🥂 I promise to let everyone know how it goes. I love that the woman from the company took the time to read this forum and provide recommendations for all of us. Score!!

that's awesome! i just checked and there's an NYC meetup group led by one of the people bob cooley trained! http://www.meetup.com/The-NYC-Flexibility-Group/
I looked at the promo for this the other day and it looks very interesting. It's very similar to PNF stretching - proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation. If I understand correctly this is done with active range of motion and with PNF it's the same sort of technique but in a static pose instead of moving the muscle through range of motion. However, it seems impossible then to do this without a partner? Does the book/DVD show you how to do this independently if you don't have someone to stretch with all the time?
Empy, I was just discussing the difference between PNF and resistance stretching on another forum. It is similar to CRAC PNF. It is not until the upper level stretches that a partner is needed.
PNF stretching confuses me as there seems to be so many variations even when it comes to the same PNF techniques! But I was under the impression that even with CRAC it's against a static force provided by the trainer and this resistance stretching seems to be against a moving resistance provided by the trainer as the athelete contracts while the trainer pulls them though full range of motion?

Ummm.....yeah, it is as confusing to me. The example I gave elsewhere was with a straddle stretch. In PNF you would either have someone pulling you from the front or pushing down on you from above. In pushing down from above you would be resisting, however much of it would involve your back. From the front it would be a lot in your shoulders and back. In the Cooley method you would pull yourself toward the floor with your hands on your ankles while at the same time trying to push the backs of your legs into the floor.

Miss Julie- I kind of had the same... feeling when I opened the book to the straddle pose, and was like, ".. I already do this and my straddle is.. doody". But after I curbed my disappointment and started doing full 16 stretch cycles ... I discovered I was making some really nice gains in all the other stretches, and then eventually the straddle. While I seemed to resist on my own in a straddle, I didn't do it in any other stretches, and I suppose my other limits just.. extended to the straddle. ... I really enjoy how .. huge of a hippy Mr. Cooley is. I'm usually really turned off by people who turn their specialties into a green crusade, but Mr. Cooley does it in a way that doesn't seem too oppressive about it. He thinks it will come naturally from the stretching, so he really doesn't stress about you stepping over to the dark side.
I've just posted a blog with the report of my one of one stretching session yesterday. 🙂

i'm doing a stretch workshop with one of bob cooley's disciples--john kelly-- (that sounds sort of religious... idont know what other word to use) on saturday! very excited and hoping that he will help to guide me in the stretching so that i can safely and confidently do it at home on my own with teh book.
Amy, that is AWESOME!!!!! I can't wait to hear all about it. The person I stretched with is Doran Christie, if you feel like mentioning it to him. Have a great time!! 😀

ok, i just read all 7 pages of this thread lol.....i definitely need help stretching, ive made gains doing it on my own but have been stuck for awhile... 1) what would you guys recommend more- the book or dvd? 2) is it idiot-proof??? like, i have a hard time understanding muscles and pnf and cnt and tnt and abc and whatever all those fancy stretching terms mean. i need something simple- do this, do that, breathe. you know what i mean??
Hey Sascha I'd say of the two, go for the DVD. However--and I keep forgetting to tell everyone this--the resistance stretcher I did the session with **highly**recommended the DVD Dara Torres and her trainers have put out. They do resistance stretching, and she said it is very easy to understand and explains the work very clearly.

oooo thank you otter!!!!! when you say resistance stretching, does that mean i need to go get a special resistance band to use or something?? i hope that question makes sense.
Resistance stretching just refers to the stretching technique that's being used in Cooley's book/dvd and Dara Torres' dvd. Basically, it's the idea of contracting the muscle you're trying to stretch while you're stretching it. It both stretches and strengthens the muscle. No special equipment needed. 🙂 Think about "making a muscle" (flexing your bicep.) Now think of someone gently pulling your fist down away from your shoulder while you try to keep your fist at your shoulder. If you RESIST and let them ultimately straighten your arm while you're keeping tension in your bicep the whole time, you've just done a resistance stretch of your bicep.

ottersocks, thank you so much hunnie!! i just made a fist and tried to push my arm down with my other hand....my arm was shaking though, i hope that shaking is a normal part of this process!!! i just looked up the book on amazon, i love his way of writing, it seems really down to earth....i think im gonna order it 🙂
Yep, shaking means you have tightness in the muscle you're stretching (not weakness.) When you get the book and are trying this, if you shake, back off on the resistance. You don't need as much as you'd think. Good luck!

im so excited! just ordered the book for $11 on ebay! 🙂 yay!! thanks otter!

i forgot i never updated this with my stretching workshop experience with john kelly! it was pretty neat. i heard about it through meetups and it ended up being tracee from studioveena, me, and about 4 other people. one was an NYU student who apparently is really into this stretching thing and has been to boston to train with bob cooley! john is one of the really advanced trainers and he is soooo nice and friendly. he went through the stretches with us and gave us corrections. i have to say that restistance stretching is way more of a workout than i thought it was. i was sweaty and def warmed up after going through a few of the stretches! he was really knowledgable and gave us a lot of info. i think we are going to set up a workshop with john and a bunch of our poling friends for sometime in early jan/late dec. i haven't (unfortunately) had a lot of time to do the stretches since saturday, but now that i know how to properly do them i am excited to start doing the stretches on my own at home. 🥂
Awesome, Amy!!! So glad it was a good experience! 🥂
I just got the Dara Torres resistance stretching DVD and I have to say I am very impressed with it. It is professionally produced and the names of the muscles are discussed frequently during the descriptions. It is easier to follow than the Bob Cooley DVD and more instruction is given so that you can execute the stretch correctly. It even has a chapter for tight hamstrings. I got a used copy off Amazon for $16 with free shipping. It also came with a bonus DVD called 'training with Dara Torres'. Here is a link to the website: http://www.innovativebodysolutions.com/
That sounds terrific. I had forgotten to say that the trainer I stretched with really recommended it highly. May have to put it on my Hanukkah list.
