I know this isn't technically pole related, but I just got a hoop for hoop dance for Christmas (yay!) and was wondering if any other polers did this too! I know I've seen Veena do it and it's amazing! Anyone have any good resources for learning, I got a DVD but I want to see more!!!

Merry Christmas! 🎅 I just recently started hooping too! I've been using SaFire's online classes on Hoop City. It's almost like taking lessons off StudioVeena! Except you pay a little more ($55 per series) for a lesson series that you then have access to forever. There are also forums and photos and videos, and your own personal space to chronicle your hoop adventures. Hoop City is basically the StudioVeena of hooping! 😀 SaFire is a great teacher and her videos have been fun and very clear. I LOVE hooping! Haven't done really since June - I need to get back into it. I totally recommend Safire's tutorials. She's kinda the Veena of hooping 😀 😁 🥂
Awesome! thanks ladies I signed up on that site, next pay check I'll start the lessons, as of now I cant even get the hoop to go around my waist more then 5 times and I look like a flapping octopus!!! haha!
If you're just starting to hoop, remember that moving left to right or forward and back is key, from there you can practice reaching in and out of it and then you'll be doing lifts in no time :) Happy Hooping, Happy Poling (:
I've been hooping a few years. I prefer poi to hoop and belly dance to poi. I guess my only hoop hint is to remember to push against the hoop wherever it touches your body. Have fun and try to work both directions.
Here's a copy of a blog I posted from just over a year ago when I recieved my first hoop. These are definitely beginner hooping tips. Enjoy! Hooping Tips and Tricks for Beginners (from a newbie) Tips: 1. I once read people in a regular hoop class cheer new and continuing hoopers when their hoop falls to the ground. This is to keep them from feeling ashamed, embaressed, discouraged. I incorporated this into my own practice. If my hoop falls, I cheer the time it stayed up rather than focusing on the fact in fell. 2. Remember YOU do not need to rotate for your hoop to rotate. :o) 3. Keep in mind your hoop only needs to hit two spots on your body to continue rotating. So you can push it forward and back with your abs or side to side with your um sides. You don't need to make circular movements with your waist/hips. In fact, if you do make circular movements the hoop will fall. 4. I found when I first started I would "wind up" my hoop really fast and really far to get it started. Then I wasn't able to keep the momentum so it would immediately fall to the ground. You'll want to experiment and find the "wind up" that's right for you. Try fast and slow and you'll likely end up adjusting to somewhere in the middle. 5. "Pumping" fast will make your hoop travel up your body. "Pumping" slow will cause the hoop to travel down. 6. If you hoop starts to fall, pump faster. If it's gotten farther down, bend your knees and then pump faster. Keep pumping faster with your knees bent until it pops back onto your waist. Then return to "normal" pumping. 7. Try to relax your neck and shoulders. Think about keeping your shoulders AWAY from your ears and squeezing your shoulder blades back. (This is a new thing I'm working on so I thought I'd add if for you as well. *smiles*) 8. Be sure to stretch before and after. - Neck: drop neck to right shoulder. Hold. Roll down through the center and come up on the left side. Hold. Roll down through the center and come up on the right side. Hold. Repeat. - Shoulders: Roll shoulders back a few times. Then roll forwards a few times. End with a few to the back. - Sides: Reach right arm out to right side of body. Bring right arm up by ear. Bend at waist over to the left side. You should feel the stretch go through your side and into your hip area. To deepen the stretch...breathe and reach your right arm out further to the left side. Slowly come back up to starting position. Repeat on left. - Quads/Thighs: Stand with feet comfortably spaced between your shoulder width. Bend both knees. Keeping left knee softly bent, bring your right leg up behind you. Hold at foot and try to have right knee pointed to the floor. You can hold your left ear with your left hand to help with balance (or grab a chair, or even use your hoop!). Hold. Release foot slowly to floor. Repeat on left. MOST IMPORTANT: Enjoy and have fun!!!!

Jivite, I am of the exact same disposition as you towards dancing style preferences. hoop > poi > bellydance but I also love liquid-pop style too so I mix things together a lot. Actually, even more strangely, the first fire spinning buddies that inspired me to really get into it were from MO too. They were from Joplin though.

YAY YOU! I actually am a hooper first and am only just getting into pole! Hooping is the best, so relaxing and meditative yet mentally and physically demanding when you are learning. Hoop city is a great place to learn. I hope you have lots of fun with your new hoop!
yes do it! I've been hooping for a year and a half and it is so addictive! you will love it! HoopCity.ca is definitely an awesome community and will help you out tremendously.

Yay these sites look great! I actually got the hoop to stay up for a few minutes the other day and was very proud of myself hehe! :) It came with a DVD too I should probably get around to watching it this week, but I thought I should probably figure out the basics before I get scared of the pros in the video!!!
I JUST got a 1 lb weighted hoop 41" diameter. So far i like it. got a hooping book and DVD that's on it's way, so I'm excited to learn some hoop tricks and such. I have pretty good stamina though and can hoop for a good 15-20 mins already just doing the basic standing in one spot and hooping. Thinking I will probably need to graduate to a 3 lb hoop in a couple of weeks to get a little more challenge going with the hoop :) Does anyone know how long it takes to see some progress in your abs from hooping? I am working on my summer belly...doing p90x, poling AND now hooping I'm figuring my abs have bo choice but to be in shape come June!

@Calipolepixie. hooping alone will not result in abs of steel. The results you see as far as abs go are more related to loss of fat. Hooping, when your new to it can be great cardio. 🥂You will see better tone to your abs and I'm not saying it wont work your abs just don't expect to have super cut abs from only hooping. As far as how soon will you see results, that will vary from person to person.
@studioveena oh no I'm not delusional lol I don't expect hooping alone to work a miracle on my abs no way! I have been doing P90x cardio, core and ab workouts, pole AND hooping to try and get my abs into shape!
