Foam Roller...couple of questions

OK..so I am just starting to look into using one. I've read some of the threads but I have a couple more questions. 1. Do some places actually offer a "how to" class on this? 2. Is this done in addition to stretching or in place of it? I get the impression it's in addition to but want to be sure. 3. How often are you suppose to use a foam roller?

I have to add this as well. I was using my foam roller for my hamstrings the other day and my husband had to tell me to stop b/c is was turning him on!!! 😮 LMAO!!!

I love my foam roller...I use one after each of my training/work out sessions then bought one for home. I am trying to get better about using it when I wake up and after stretching each night.

Ok. I am so confused as of what kind of roller to get. There are longer and shorter ones. And I heard the white ones collapse eventually. How is the one that comes with the Be Spun dvds? It is white, so I guess it is the kind that will collapse?

I have the 'Golds Gym' one from WalMart, it's blue, and it works just fine ~ I use it almost every day and the kids play with it too and it's held up beautifully!

I'm cheap and crafty and just had to try it... I own a yoga mat and rubber bands, clearly you can make something like a foam roller with these materials. Worked ok with light work on the legs. Then I put more weight on and it smushed up didn't roll anymore. I do not recommend the rolled up yoga mat, but I got an idea of how it could feel and work. I'll be buying a real one.

I got this cheap foam roller a month ago and it actually has pretty high ratings: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0015V355U It's even cheaper now than when I bought it (It's $16.80 right now and was $19.95 before). It is the white kind, but it has held up well. I'm not sure what I'll be saying in 6 months, although it has not dented or collapsed yet. This is probably a good one for people on a budget or who just want to try some foam rolling before commiting to buying one of the fancier ones. I've not had any problems with it and exercising with it feels great.

I just ordered the one that Veena suggested and am going to try it with the foam roller lessons here. Maybe this will help me work out post workout soreness. I have never used a foam roller before so curious.

Love love love love love my foam roller and Veena's new tutorial series on them. I've used them before at a cross fit gym I use to go to but now between all the climbing I do on poles and silks, it's essential for my back and hip flexors. I just bought a 6" firm roller from Dicks Sporting good for $29.00. The nubby one's look fantstic, but the plain firm ones do the job great!

OR... I'm going after it to give it a test run. If it's not high density enough, I'll leave it at the store.. BUT.. I'll let you guys know how it works. (My Bolster for Massage therapy is a 'half'.. grr. lol). I found a foam roller at Marshall's for $13...by none other than Jane Fonda! It comes with a DVD, too. have only used the roller twice and have yet to watch the DVD, but I look forward to incorporating it into my routine. I watched a few of your roller vids, Veena...they are great!

It's also possible to make your own roller with PVC piping, some duct tape, and slight padding. I just read about this on the forum here somewhere, but I can't find it again now! I remember thinking... What an awesome idea. Though I suppose if you were super hardcore, you could just use the pvc piping. 😲 I used to run a LOT, ie marathon training, etc. and the foam roller was my best friend. I have so many different kinds, but if you are a beginner, I would suggest sticking with the white or blue density. Though if you think you are going to like it, the white density ones collapse pretty quickly so maybe go with the blue. Black density and the other fancy ones (triggerpoint/rumble roller/bead sticks) can get expensive fast, though they are typically durable. I have them all! Cardboard is another option, not too expensive but very very intense. There is almost no give in a cardboard roller.

Ok. So I ended up getting one from Tragetjust for now. It is purple. Gaiam brand. It was supposed to come with a dvd, but apparently someone took it out! : 0 I don't really care but am gonna call Target anyway. I guess I paid for the whole kit. Haven't tried it yet, but seems to be good quality. My cat is playing with it currently. Has anyone tried this one? I will report back.

I really like the foam roller from Target. I just did all the lessons and feel nice and loose. I will eventually get the amazon one I think because it is longer, but since I did not want to wait for shipping, this one is great for now.

I have the Golds Gym one from Wal Mart. From my understanding, the white one is less dense than the blue one. The colors are to identify the density of the foam. If you follow Alethea on FB, she has a black one with the nubbies on it. That shit is crazy hard core. IMO I suggest starting at a low density and working up. I use mine at the end of the day. I place it on my lower back and lay back. OMG I can hear my spine popping and it feels wonderful! Im still having issues with my outer part of my hips and hamstrings. The foam roller is helping so far.
