What to with your arms when you arent holding the pole?
Posted by glitterhips on March 10, 2009 at 1:59 pmWhenever I do any moves that require me to let go with my arms so they hang there (inverted crucifix, gemini, scorpio, etc) they always look soooo stupid! I go back and watch my videos and my arms are sticking out all uncomfortably and it just doesn’t look pretty to me. I dont see this happening when I watch anyone else’s vids so maybe no one sees it in mine and I’m being too picky but if anyone has ideas about how to make myself look a little more graceful that would be awesome https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif Thanks everyone!

I’m no expert, but I guess the fact that you are noticing your limbs is already the key to make you use them in a more deliberate way so they don’t look, as you said, ‘stupid’ – not that I have noticed anything stupid…
You could explore the fact that you are not using your arms to hold you to create a bigger effect on the move – so your arms work for you either because they are positioned in a way that makes the movement more dramatic or because of the way/speed they are stretched into a position. For example, in terms of position, when doing a hip hold or the gemini, you can keep your arms parallel to the floor (perpendicular to the pole) in a way that draws attention to the "no arms" holding situation / or you can get hold of your foot…
I’ve seen people using speed to increase the dramaticity of their moves – some move slowly and carefully as they extend their limbs, enhancing the sensuality of the move (so you could have your hands travel through your body before extending them fully, or just make the movement of ‘extending’ or curling anything slow and deliberate); others get in a position and sharply extend arms or move them (e.g. invert from a seated position and immediately do a sharp move extending their arms – as opposed to travelling slowly – and then keep them in a firm position (rather than forgetting about them) – think about how gymnasts always do a snappy extender arm move and hold this position purposefully as they land on the ground and finish a move.
I guess the secret is attention to the limbs, so you don’t ‘forget’ the arms, but do things in a way that look deliberate.
Hope this helps in some way.

first of all..I don’t think your arms look funny. But if you do want some ideas I would use the arm movements you would be using when you belly dance. I think that would be a great addition. You have the belly dance skills so really incorporate them!! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif

I rub my butt a lot w my hands… https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_lol.gif wish I could stop that, but I never feel like my hands are dry enough!!
I never noticed your hands looking any specific way when you dance. But if you want something to do with them, here are some ideas, depending on the type of dance..
For sensual dance, play with your hair or touch your body a lil bit. Or like Veena said, incorporporate belly dance and do the snake arm thing. If its a faster song, you could always throw your arms up or backinto the "tada!" position when doing a trick. I’ve seen a lot of dancers do that in performances w lot of tricks. I think it’s to help summon applause from the audience. But honestly, I think your arms look fine, really. If the movements are too deliberate, that could make the routine look too planned and then it won’t seem natural.

I have the same problem glitter, I feel so stupid not knowing what to do with my hands… I never used to do any moves where you just held it and hung around looking pretty, so I have no idea what to do. I had a gymnast try and show me how to ‘present’ I think she called it (with your fingers all separated and pointed funny) and I failed that after ages of her trying to show me… I can’t get my wrists at the right angle. And then another girl tried to show me how to hold your hands all pretty like you do in ballet, and then SHE gave up as well after like half an hour… so now I just grab my boobs. Hmph!

Hi,
I make my hands/arms follow the expression of my feet/legs . So if my legs are all straight and pointy, I make my arms all straight with my fingers pointy. I usually have their actions echo that of the opposite leg. I find this feels more even and balanced than trying to hard.

From a Male Prospective…I think you look perfect in your videos!!!!! Absolutely perfect!!!!!!!! I think you may be being overly critical of your arms. Your moves are absolutely breath-taking! I even loved the part on one of your videos when you fixed your boots on the pole. That was amazing!
The girls gave you some great advice but I think the best advice is to just be your natural self and go with the flow. You don’t have to worry about trying to do everything perfect. Being too meticulous about it can run the risk of looking self indulgant. By being yourself and having fun you already look perfect!!!
