When you do basic spins, are you gripping the pole (with top hand) with your thumb around the pole as if it’s a baseball bat, or do you let it wrap around with the rest of your fingers? I notice I am letting it wrap around (kind of like I am ‘cupping’ the pole with my whole hand and thumb), but that gives me very little grip and I tend to slide down quickly. But when I try to wrap my thumb around, it tends to stop my spinning.

You should wrap your thumb around the pole. I’m trying to picture doing it the other way and I can definitely see why you’re not able to get a good grip that way.

It sounds to me like you have the newbie’s death grip. Keep practicing with your thumb wrapped around the pole and as you get more strength your grip will loosen up as your arms get stronger.

It’s very common for newbies to have the problem of gripping too tightly https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif

Thanks, guys. I had a feeling this was also causing my forearm pain when doing bracket holds… I am not holding myself up enough with my top hand and this is causing a lot of strain everywhere. Strange that none of my instructors haven’t noticed or haven’t said anything…

I always seem to have a problem with using my thumb. When I rock climb I almost refuse to use my thumb even though it adds a lot of strength. I need to get out of this bad habit and strengthen things up. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif
