Newbie Pole review? HELP !!
Posted by brettsgal on June 28, 2011 at 1:31 pmHi I am completely green on this issue and I dont know what pole is gonna be right for me. I am 5'6 and currently weigh 195lbs. I want to get in shape and have fun, and secretly I have been wanting to know how to pole dance for about 15 years now.. Is there a better pole to buy to learn on? one that is easily removable and will support my body weight? as well as pole dancing workout dvds that anyone can reccomended. Its expensive to buy a pole that isn't suited for me…. Thanks and I would appreciate any help I can get.

hi Brettsgal,
Veena put an article on here about the best poles out there. X pole, Platinum stages and little mynx. Xpole and little mynx are portable and you can take them down any time you want. Plantinum stages comes with a base i believe. My best bet would be to do a little research on all of them on the internet and find what suits you best.
All the best xx

IMO, don't bother with video tapes. Get a 1 year subscription to Veena's videos. Her videos are awesome! You'd end up spending way more on DVD's anyways.
I like my x-pole and lil mynx. I live in an apartment and can't screw anything in the ceiling, so the x-pole is perfect for that. I am going to pass on info that many dancers have told me (recently actually.) Get a 50mm pole, you can always get a thinner one later on and it is easier to go from a thicker to a thinner pole than vice versa (totally true.) the thicker poles build hand strength really well. I also say err on the slipperier side of metals. I started out on a SS, was sliding all over and whiping my hands constantly, but once I got the hang of it, it was easy for me to transition to grippier metals. Lil mynx is easy to put up and take down, but not easy to hide and it only comes in SS or powder coated. Xpole isn't hard to put up and take down, it just takes some getting used to, but it is a very sturdy pole, and you can put a permanent ceiling mount in. They have chrome, titanium and soo brass poles.

i love my xpoles!!!! i bought 45s cuz my hands are really tiny and the 50 was way too hard for me to grip and be comfy. i had a ss initially but went tg!!! my platinum stage pole broke so i wouldnt personally recommend them but that was just my experience. but i think in the end its about personal preference. so if u can get ur hands on different poles to test em out, id def do that.
i love the lessons on here. they have taught me sooooo much. but if u decide to get dvds, try art of pole by jamilla deville or live once by elizabeth m. they are great beginner dvds. if u have any questions about dvds, dont hesitate to inbox me cuz im pretty sure i have em all. lol. im not obsessed w pole. lol

Brett. This is my experience: I am 23 + 31 years of experience (do the math), that is how i express my age!. I have own a pole for 2 years, and I used it only for physical therapy. I had some DVD's on pole dancing and instructions….Never learned anything! I bought Veenas lessons 3 months ago and in only 3 months I learn to hold the pole. climb the pole and strengthen my R. arm. This lessons are the best thing that have happen to my life and my rehab..sooo do not even doubt yourself…I am sure that if you get lessons through Veena, and you are consistent and get your own pole you will get very far…GOOD LUCK.

I also recommend the lessons. I started with the 30days to see if they would work for me and will upgrade because I've really benefited from them. My pole is a platinum stage multi piece – top loading. Others here say you can still order it that way instead of bottom loading by making a nice friendly request. It is removable too. You can do searches on poles from this site. Use key words in the search bar like: Xpole, Platinum stages and Lil Mynx there are many different opinions and advantages and drawbacks to each so read up as much as you can before making your choice. Once you get started and take the first step you will be surprised at what you will accomplish. I https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_heart1.gif pole dance.

Thanks everyone for all your suggestions. I def will check out the lessons online here and do my homework on the poles. It sounds like a lot of upper body strength is key in pole dancing. Any type of off pole workout in particular that you can reccomend? I currently use an elliptical trainer and some free weights to drop some weight. Thanks ladies!

She has a great strength routine on here. She has stretches and conditioning exercises as well as pole moves. I bellydance in addition to pole. Some girls do aerial silks and the Lyra.

i am going to recommend a relly good DVD for you. It isn't pole, but it will build the muscles you need for pole. It is called "Bellydance Arms and Posture" by Rachel Brince. It works. If you want the rest of your body worked out, try her "Serpentine" video. I find that a lot of the feminine dances use similar muscle groups, so by practicing bellydance and those exercises, it wil build your strength AND coordination. It will also help with the sexy transitions in pole.
If you want to see how Rachel Brice dances, I'll attach a link. She is like watching smoke dance. I took a week long workshop wit her in Maui and she's amazing.

i also use a foam roller. specifially, the grid and their dvd system!!! great workout for your core as its very intense!!!
