Is there any hope for a 46 yr old newbie?
Posted by Cazzzz on August 14, 2014 at 6:48 pmI’ve been an exercise for most of my life. Not terribly athletic, but exercise to look good and feel good. That’s about all the background I have. I know it take time and dedication to accomplish anything, but am I being realistic here? I think I can get this pole skill set. I think I can. I think I can.

I’m 29 and have not been very into exercising. Judging just from what you can see of women on this sight- YES! Definetly! Some of the women I most admire on here are 50+.
It’s also encouraging to progress & keep at it because every time you do it you feel really good, so even when you don’t get moves right away you still want to practice them for the adrenaline. -
Absolutely! There’s a woman at my studio about your age and she loves it.
I see zero reason why you can’t pick up pole dancing just as well as any exercise regime 🙂 -
You should read this old discussion and add yourself:

Plenty of over 40, over 50 and yes there are some over 60.
If you follow Veena’s 30 Day Take-off you will be amazed even before the 30 days is up. -
Yep, I’m 46, have been poling a year, and am competing for the first time in Sept. It’s never too late to learn, grow, and have fun!
-
I’m curious as all get out to see how long it’s going to take me to “get it.”
Wow, WebJunk, there are a ton of post in that over-40 thread you suggested. Thanks for pointing it out! 🙂 -
There are also a lot of us over 50 too but you youngins are welcome as well!!!

I am 44 and only been poling 1.5 years. There’s definitely hope. Just stick with it and rejoice in the small victories along the way. Some things take longer to develop than others. Flexibility is definitely more of a challenge for me than the younger ones. I have accepted there are some moves that require a lot of flexibility that I may never be able to do well, but I can still do way more than most my age and I am stronger than I have ever been in my life. Age is just a number.

Yup! One of my instructors didn’t start till she was 45 and she’s 10 years down the road and still poling up a storm!

A WAY over 50 here, started at almost 50 yrs old. As for how long will it take, everyone is different, and every spin/trick/transition is different. The key is don’t compare yourself to others (which I have to watch myself!) and have fun. It can be hard work, but worth it. Let us know how it goes!!!

DEFINATELY!!!! I started at 40 and there was a lady in my class that was in her 70’s and poling for the first time. She was awesome, she did everything everyone else did…inverts and all! I agree with Hookedonpole…don’t compare yourself to anyone else regardless of age or experience. Have a BLAST!

I started when I was 49, am 50 now, and absolutely love it!!
-
I started at your age and loved it, but have had health issues, so really haven’t been on the pole for over a year. But YES, do it, you will love it!
-
oh yes Cazz, do it and you will never look back! Do not rush things, take your time and share your experience with all of us here in SV! Most of all, just have fun: learning to pole is all about the journey, like everything else! Looking forward to reading more from you.

At the studio I go to there is also a lady in her 70s who comes in sometimes and does spins and everything, she’s awesome!

Right now I can barely do a pole hold (as demonstrated in Veena’s lessons). I can make it up the pole for one climb and that’s about it. Now that I’ve got the subscapularis and triceps trigger points settled down from my first fervent week of classes, I can put in place the conditioning exercises Veena offers. My pole studio doesn’t even talk about conditioning. It’s like being thrown in the river to learn how to swim!

As a 46 year old that has been on the pole for 4 years you never stop learning and you get stronger with each attempt. You will find moves you love and moves you hate, you will rejoice with each achievement and soak your bruises later. I pole to find myself after a tough week at work. The music fills and recharges me and the flow that I create from freestyle dance or the learning of a new move or taking a spin and making it my own is what keeps me coming back.

My husband got me a pole for my 46th birthday last December. I only practice 30 minutes 4-5 days a week. Today not only I Am surprised for the moves and techniques I can do but my husband’s mouth stays open when he sees me dancing. You can do it. You will feel so much sexier. This is the best exercise I have done. I canceled my gym membership. Don’t need it anymore. Have fun and enjoy it.

gilt1414, that sounds like a good plan – 30min a day, 4-5 days a week. I’m gonna copy you. 🙂

Keep us informed of your progress. You will be surprised on how well you will do and how fast you will learn.

YES!!!! I started at 43, pole fitness with your exact history. Still at it and love it. It is not easy, but I love the movement and the flexability I have accomplished. I found that yoga compliments the sport and gives you more longevity. Helps with injury prevention

Hey! I am born and bred Tucsonian. Went to Catalina high. I am 51 and been poling for about 9 months. It is absolutely doable – just take your time. I would say strength and conditioning is priority for getting a good start. My problem is now I have developed poler friends – most are much younger than me. So sometimes it’s a rude awakening that I am not 29 anymore physically :). Good luck, stay on Veena for encouragement and make it your own journey!

Oh goodness yes! I’m 12 weeks in as a 40-something poler with girls young enough to be my daughters. I LOVE it. I am in Ireland and my teacher is a world champ and she is my inspiration. I love working with her, learning, growing as a poler.
I’ve moved very quickly into intermediate stuff such as half flag and polecat, Cupid and figurehead. Every little success is a joy! I remember how it felt to pull myself up into the start of half flag. Bliss.
Enjoy your journey. It’s addictive. -
If Greta ponterelli (spelled wrong) can do this at 63 yes anyone can
