I'm in. This will be something. I hate doing these cuz it hurts but since you are all in and will support me, I will do it.
Question: Do you practice everyday or few days a week?
-
Anamika- Of course we'll support you! That's the point!
I find that strength training and flexibility training is very similar, and it's best to take a couple of days rest each week. I love stretching, so it's sometimes hard for me to stop!
I will also say… ANY kind of stretching or flexibility training should NOT hurt! EVER!
If it hurts, ease off!
I've done more damage than good by stretching till it hurts- I actually decreased my flexibility that way.
You should feel some slight discomfort, a light pulling, and try to focus on relaxing. And then, as you feel the discomfort fading, you can push yourself a tiny bit further, until the discomfort returns. This is why we work on one single stretch for 60-90 seconds.

Thanks Runemist34….
I will following your suggestions. Ok, so it does matter how long you hold the stretch. It's sometimes hard to find that fine line between discomfort and pain. I'm thinking 4 days a week would be good. Let's see how far I get by xmas.

Question ladies….
I have been trying my center (middle) splits for past few days. Today, I had this weird feeling in my left foot. it's actually my toes. My toes of my left foot got pretty warm. I didn't feel that in my right foot so I got a little concerned. It also went away once I got out of my split. I'm about 10-12 inches away from the floor
Has this happened to anyone? Do you guys know the possible reasons for this?
All your help is greatly appreciated.
Thank you…………

Sorry, posted in the wrong spot the 1st time. Please count me in 🙂 Thanks 🙂

How is everyone going with their goals!? Just a reminder that it’s now only 5ish weeks to Christmas!!! SO MUCH progress can be made in that time!

Well, I thought I was doing pretty good and was almost to the floor and I started that 6 weeks to splits program and realized I have been doing something wrong. She said not to let the back knee face the floor because the knee will automatically bend and I will never reach a full split if I do that. So, she said to let the knee face out and focus on keeping the knee straight and when I do that, I am way further away from the floor 🙁 This really stinks!! It is also a bit confusing because in Veena’s lessons, it seems she tells you to do the opposite focusing on keeping the hips facing forward which I can understand, but I didn’t realize my back knee was bending 🙁 Did this happen to anyone else??
-
Jane, there are 2 basic types of front splits, Open and Squared split. If you turn the knee out (open) your are not getting the full benefit of the split stretch. If you keep the hips squared (both forward) then your are getting a full stretch. Neither one is right or wrong. If you take a look at the front splits routine you’ll see a demo of both open and squared. 🙂 As far as never reaching a full split with the knee down, I don’t know what she means by that!

My progress is going very slowly. I think I’ve actually lost flexibility on my left side split and gained about 1/2 inch on my right….feeling a little discouraged.
-
Thanks Veena! I saw you do both the open and squared split and that is why I was working towards doing the squared split. Why is it that my open split is so much further away from the ground? Which one do you think I should work on more?
-
If your open split is farther away it’s most likely because you have tight adductors (inner thigh muscles). You don’t stretch the adductors as much in a squared split, you’ll stretch the hip flexors and quads more. Well I think both are important to work on. If you want to start doing moves that require more back mobility then work on your squared split, this will help you in back bends.

well if it makes you guys feel better i haven’t made any amazing progress either. It’s hard because flexibility gains are so small…every mm is a mile! I’m thinking I might start asking the boy to measure how far away from the ground I am once a week, so I have a measurable number to go off. Otherwise I could actually be making progress but bc it’s so small I don’t think I am, if that makes sense?
What are everyone’s current routines like for stretching? -
I’ve been stretching for almost 2 years and I’ve not gotten to my goals.
-
Ahh, as always my time has been riddled with issues (mostly my ankle being stupid), but… I’ll be working HARD on it after I move and have things settled. I’ll be working on it all December, and I’ll finally be able to post pictures and videos because… well, because I frigging want to! So there!
I did have quite a bit of progress when I was working on it before, and hope to get back to that point when I start up again. It only seemed like an inch or two… but it felt like MILES! -
Ladies, ladies, ladies…. Thank you for posting your experiences of this split stuff. I’m having such an issue on my left side. I feel like something’s will pop when I’m doing the splits. I go for body adjustments routinely as I need to so I take care of myself well but damn these splits. My whole left side is a bit off anyway so I’ve just decided to tell myself that it may take 10 years or 10 lifetimes for me to achieve the split because of how I’m made. I practice pole on both sides as that’s something that my teacher always wants me to do and this is great and I have no issue doing a lot of the tricks on both sides to a point where it doesn’t matter which side it is, I just do whatever works out.
Splits are such and issue even though I practice at least 3 times a week.. I’m not giving up but I am going to announce it to you that I’m not getting my splits by xmas. Thanks for letting me share this. I feel better.
-
I’ve been trying to do a split my whole life and haven’t gotten there yet. I’m beginning to think my hips just aren’t made to split. But I’m still trying. My rockin legs and abs DVD is due here any day now so ill give it another go.
-
I managed to get to the floor (practising middle/box splits knees up) with my legs as wide as I can get them, but it’s just a really wide straddle not 180 degrees. It’s progress though 🙂
-
I’m the same I have a really wide straddle and not there with my front splits yet but I’ve noticed a small improvement. I’m not training as much as I’d like due to family stuff going on. I might be closer by Xmas I’m not giving up hope yet!! Lol 🙂
-
I’m in, but I don’t know about the Santa hat thing lol. I’ve been really pushing myself towards middle splits lately, and finally can do both of the side splits.
-
I’m in! Gonna try to get the other girls in my studio in on it too!
-
I want in but is it possible to get my splits by xmas. I’m almost there but veena said splits trainings twice a week and this is a slow process. is there a faster safe way?
-
You never wanna rush flexy training. You run the risk of injury. Just keep at the twice a week routine. Some people gain flexibility quickly, others (like me) are slower.
-
Agree with AerialGypsy!! Don’t rush and push your body further than it’s capable of. xmas tree splits is just going to give us all something to work towards! For those of us that don’t make it by christmas (I will definitely be one of them!) we can still work towards getting as low as possible before that time…and then maybe New Years splits! Or Valentines splits!!
I’m splits training twice (sometimes three) times a week..so that’s intense stretching, and then every other day I’m just doing gentle stretches or foam rolling 🙂 -
Adding to the not rushing point, once every month or two, ill take a full week off super intense stretching and super intense strength training, and let my muscles heal and my body rest. The following week after, Im sooo much more flexible and strong, so that may be something you want to try sometime.
