Hey, guys. I made a video today, and Saphyre reminded me that this discussion was going on!! I thought I would post it here for all of you because it is very relevant to this topic.

PS You guys are not alone, so many people suffer from these types of mental illnesses. I've had my own very dark times, luckily right now is not one of them! But I can fully relate! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_heart1.gif

You HAVE to place the dome against a joist/beam! Golgotha had some good suggestions for finding the beams.

Can you do a Tuck hip hold? Go from there and then extend the legs in to Pike. Yes, a video would help.
Here is the Tuck hip hold https://www.studioveena.com/galleries/view/4f88346a-af20-476c-a0a5-285c0ac37250

It's so great that you have a photo to look back on!!
I don't have a pic of my starting point, but at 2:20 in the vid you'll see where I use to be http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JbW-t8Fsdvc&feature=channel_video_title
I would also suggest using a slightly different pose. It's pretty much the same only your farther away from the pole, and you've place a leg straight along the pole like this pic on my profile. https://www.studioveena.com/photos/view_photo/4db05424-5cb8-4531-8ae5-099c0ac37250 I honestly don't know how you guy's use that pose…it would smash my lady bit!! ouch. lol
I feel that a lot of back mobility is learning HOW to use your spine and how to contract the muscles in the right way. Lengthing through the whole spine not just the low back. I started off with poor back mobility and I believe everyone can improve there mobility, but to what degree depends on gentics, times spent/effort, and attitude.
The lessons I have in the stretching section and in the back mobility routine, are all using stretches and exercises I have personally used myself with amazing results! I feel slow and steady is best, 1-2 times a week is good for starting your mobility work and NEVER push to the point of intense pain. It's your spine, it's not worth trying to push too far!! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif

All great thoughts and points have been made! This is something that needs to be discussed.
I agree that there should be several "types" of competitions out there. We need options! There are some dancers who like the sporty, trick, aspect of pole, and others that fell in love with the heel wearing, sensual side of pole. I think artistry can be shown in both the sporty and sensual side. We need high quality competitions of all kinds both professional level comps and amateur! We should not expect amateur level dancers to bust out the same level of pole moves as the pro!! I think there needs to be a better definition of Pro and Amateur as well.
*Stands on soap box* BUT, I want to remind everyone, that competing at a professional level for any sport or performing art, will be very taxing on the body and could result in chronic aches and pains later on in life. So PLEASE don't feel that you HAVE to compete in order to be a real pole dancer, or to reap the benefits of pole. Respect your bodies limits and as Charley said in chat "live to pole another day!" https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif

If any of you are looking for videos that have options for decreasing AND increase difficulty of a stretch, check out the Individual stretches here and the 3 routines as well. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif

I'm glad the stretches are working for you Steffie! Talliacachild, the middle splits routine would be helpful because it stretches so many muscle group. You don't have to be close to the middle splits to do this routine. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_flower.gif
Here it is for you. https://www.studioveena.com/lessons/view/4e2d837d-6f9c-46f6-93df-22110ac37250
Keep in mind too that you don't have to have super flexibility to have a nice looking aerial V! Much of it can be more of an "illusion" done with the right hip and leg placement. I cover this in the Straight Edge V lessons. https://www.studioveena.com/lessons/view/4d10f457-834c-45b0-8448-3b550ac37250

I can't speak for silks, but as for pole dance….Our website is the only site that offers lessons that progressively build on one another. The focus is also on build up the necessary strength first, this is beyond important! Sadly, many studios do not even offer this progression to their students!! Our lessons are NOT randomly placed, leaving the viewer wondering what to look at next. Even in studio it's up to the student to listen to instruction and actually follow. Studioveena online lessons rock. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif

D, Luxx, all the moves you listed are great moves to know. There are people that pole for over a year without being ready to invert. Your not alone there! Are you taking the lessons here, and for how long? It's hard when you feel like your alone but I'd be happy to help you out if you like. Send me an email and we can take a closer look at what maybe hindering your progress. Hopefully you can also find a good quality studio soon too! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_flower.gif

Don't feel discouraged, Glitterqueen! As others have mentioned, don't rush! Even if there are others in your class that can invert on their first try, doesn't mean they should be.
As mentioned in Keex's blog, you need to build a foundation. This is what we work on in my lessons here as well. One thing builds on another.
In order to see faster progress, working on your pole work, and conditioning outside of your class time would be very helpful. Taking a class once a week isn't really enough for most of us to see an improvement, unless we are strength training or conditioning 3 times a week too.
Also, not every pole move is right for every body, (yes I meant body) https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif we all have strengths and weaknesses. A pole dancer doesn't have to invert, but it is something you can strive for if you like. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_flower.gif

Pinkkupcukez, if you're having a lot of joint pain you may want to make sure you take your rest days. As Saphyre mentioned. Rest is equally important, you NEED rest for the body to repair it's self. If I doesn't have time to recover it will "break down" and force you to rest.
Don't worry about trying to catch up to anyone, there will always be someone ahead or better, out there. As long as you're seeing progress with your own journy that's all that matters. It's hard not to do though https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_mrgreen.gif
If you do conditioning exercises for your body you may not even need all of the braces once your body has become balanced and strong. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif
