  • At my class we do log rolls lying on the floor on tummy and pulling up into cobra/back arch then down again; this looks like the same idea but harder. So maybe try the log roll first?

I always think someone should edit a short film of home polers with random pets wandering into the shot and set it to music…

    Love the pics.

Apologies for lowering the tone… One of my teachers gave me a great CAR/layback tip (I love CKR hate CAR). She said look at your thighs in the mirror as you stand, ankles crossed, legs not turned in and bum not clenched.

Now turn your thighs in and tuck in your tail and CLENCH like you have eaten sonething that disagrees with you and you’re trying not to fart or pee your pants. See how the gap between your thighs is gone. Look at how solid your glutes, quads, inner thighs, abs have gone. Pop your hand in between your thighs. See, you are crushing your fingers!

Okay now lie on floor and do it up the pole and pull up.

And if you’re still slippy, dab grip aid in between your thighs!

    Good luck 🙂

You can be hypermobile without having EDS; lots of dancers and gymnasts are.

Sat – 2 pole classes – pole fit and pole practice back to back
    Sun – pole fit class
Tues – 2 pole classes – morning and evening
    Wed – nothing
Thurs – yoga am and/ or chair dance class evening
Fri – ballet barre class am

I used to do 2 x tribe-core weekly as well which is trx strength training but I was over- training so scaled back. I go to 3 different pole studios and I don’t think any of the teachers know how much extra stuff I do! They are all great and I learn different stuff off each teacher.

Looking back it looks a bit intense but classes are only an hour except yoga and include warm up/stretch down plus watching instructor/other students so not the same as an intense home session alone.

And it’s keeping me sane having an hour to myself most days: the rest of the time I look after my 3 year old who has special needs which is hard (but rewarding).

I am still faffing about trying to work out what finish will work for my pole that I am going to order: titanium gold x pole or powder coated? I go to studios with chrome x poles and platinum stages poles and use lots of grip aid but I want to train at home without using it so much. It’s humid here and never drops below 79 degrees f in my rented apartment. It is very hard to know what to do as I like to spin and slide but also to invert safely!

Veena has 4 exercises every pole dancer should know on youtube and on here and they were brilliant for awareness of my scapula, I frequently dislocate my shoulders (and pop the joint back in myself :-/. ) but since going those exercises I am much stronger and more aware.

Also boringly doing pull ups on pole and tucks on pole and pencil spin. Really thinking about my body, pulling up pelvic floor, zipping core, imagining my scapula are huge angel wings which I need to fold in.

Working both sides, starting with just a few reps. It has made me so much safer – instead of ‘bending’ my way out of trouble or collapsing into a muscle-stressing, joint-yanking heap I can control my ascent, descent and keep my position.

Re elbow support: if it makes you more aware of the need to be careful and not lock out and hyperextend I would wear one.

Disclaimer – am not medic just hypermobile ex dancer with interest in injury avoidance!

I have hypermobility, bruise easily and am very flexible which everyone thinks is marvellous but it isn’t – pain and injury are constant concerns. What she needs to massively focus on is strength training. Slowly and devotedly building solid core strength especially and strength generally everywhere else – even the small forearm muscles, hand muscles, the lot. Think slow, slow, solid, perfect form. Pilates. Understanding what she is doing and holding it, isometric work. Slow pull ups on pole. Controlled straddle headstands. Slow spin in pencil. Diamond push ups. Etc.

Thank you! I really love the move.
It didn’t hurt much learning it which is unusual for me; I always bruise for a week with new tricks but this one is just balance and bendiness with a bit of strength.

I would love to do it spinning but the pole always grinds to a halt as soon as I’m there.

Here is someone doing it out of a side split spin which looks great.

And someone else doing it on its own.

Does that look like it? I got into it out of Apprentice once but can’t quite remember how I did it.

I can’t pick just one! My go-to combo is slow motion splits fan kick into spinning pole climb, dizzy swan at top, invert into V, helicopter spin whilst dropping down pole, finish in splits on floor. Then try not to be sick.

So the good old chopper/v/straddle I guess. If I had to pick one.

I only properly got this last week and it was when my teacher said as Chem said: hips in front of pole not to side. Also look at ceiling.

For some reason it’s easier for me to go to chopper/V first though this is meant to be harder. It is automatic to bring crotch to pole and curl lower abs and pelvis into pole and use legs to tip me back from a V.

    High-fives fellow 40+ polers!
    It is great isn’t it?
I never thought I’d be upside down in booty shorts at 43 but so glad I am!
