So Chem, you do this as a pose, like a wrist sit? I can't imagine having the pole, um, there. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_eek.gif
And it can be done arms only on spin, and also offset one one bum cheek as a spin on either spin or static, like this at 5:00: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=ADs04O9T0Ks
I need to work on this! Thanks for the tips.

Thanks! I searched for this move too awhile back I think…sometimes though when I look at older threads the links don't work anymore….anyway, I would like to get those Jamilla DVD's! However, I don't really want to buy the whole set of 5 ($$) , though maybe I should!

LM is good, no doubt about it. I would negotiate too. I paid 125 for a black static used LM.

Yes, you'll get it back, don't give up now!
I took a big break for pregnancy and recovery…and then I also took up hooping. It's always been hard to either hoop or pole with little ones. But yes, the muscle memory and the fact that you know you CAN do it is already in you.
GL!!!

That's awesome–congrats! As others have said, there are many benefits to studio classes and it's a great complement to your own home learning. I didn't step into a studio until last year, and even though I've never done a regular studio level/classes, even just taking classes here and there and workshops and being on SV has helped me immensely.
GL! 🙂

Sorry to hear your friend isn't on the site any longer! It's tough to lose touch with posters that you connect with. :/

Lovelife–either is fine! I always freestyle my dances, though I do also try to have some specific moves/combos that I keep in mind to work in to the dance. The rest I just let happen, however it may. LOL. I also don't have much time to pole, so for that reason I don't choreo and edit… I just throw it up online however it turns out.
GL–this month was my first challenge and it was fun. 🙂

Amy, awesome. Knowing the tip about opening the knee will help. I tried to do this today but dangit if I couldn't stick to the pole enough to bend down!
Veena–I KNEW there must be some shoulder stretching exercises! I looked and didn't see them. Thanks!
Sensual–Those are great, too!
-
Bumping this up. I have (what I think are) tight shoulders too. I have trouble reaching around the pole for the floating ballerina, for instance. What book are you all talking about? I have The Genius of Flexibility' but it doesn't appear the stretches are broken down by type (ie –shoulder stretches).

Oh, yes, IKEA has some cool wavy mirrors–no frames!
-
Maybe it depends on the person removing the frame! i got those cheap door mirrors and broke not one–but TWO–trying to remove the frames. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_eek.gif

When I got it, I was happy to see it's endorsed by Dara Torres, and I remembered that you recommended her videos!
polefairy–I have the same questions as you! Great thread. I am working on my splits. In reading the book referenced above, anyone at any age can increase flexibility, which is awesome to hear!
tarah-what confuses me too, and the same goes for the question/answer to 'how often should I pole?' is, what if you only stretch for 30 min a day (for example) as opposed to an hour every other day? If you do 30 min it seems you can stretch every day right? Or what if you stretch/workout less intensely? I guess the answer is to have body awareness and see how you feel the next day. IDK, it's definitely confusing!

Julie, I try to give people the benefit of the doubt. There comes a point when it's too much. Not respecting the forum and its owners and the namecalling is where it breaks down for me and needs to stop. Some people really enjoy that kind of thing and creating chaos. I don't understand it. Maybe they'll change, however I have witnessed this exact behavior on other boards though and haven't seen it to be so. Again, JMHO.

Amen. Here's the link to troll definitions that I posted in the other thread. http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=troll
Other forums I've been on have had an 'ignore' feature….which would be nice. Banning her would be nice, too. 🙂

MemberJanuary 4, 2012 at 8:36 am in reply to: How can I start dancing professionally @ clubs/events??LOL. Well, it can be anything, this is just what I have experience with so far (I forgot to add lyra! I hope to learn that better this year, as well as silks. 🙂
Good luck, I love how there are so many options and how the genres cross. I have done 2 hoop gigs with a local burlesque troupe. I met the burlesque performer, who invited me to perform in their shows, via a mutual friend who knew we both poled. If not for the pole connection, I never would have gotten connected with the burlesque troupe!

MemberJanuary 4, 2012 at 8:17 am in reply to: How can I start dancing professionally @ clubs/events??My advice would be to not limit yourself to ONE style of dance. To be marketable, you should learn or at least familiarize yourself with as many different dance styles as possible. There is so much out there!
For instance, I have experience with:
Pole
Hoop (including one hoop, twin hoops, mini twins, fire hoop) & poi
Bellydance
Burlesque
Ballroom
….the more genres you learn/expose yourself to (even if you don't become proficient) the more well-rounded you'll be.
A lot of getting gigs is just putting yourself out there. I have gotten my gigs this way, by performing in public and by word of mouth. Finding a group of dancers and networking with them will probably be key, too.
