Hey hun,
I’ve just got this move last week so hopefully I will be able to help!
In your vid the leg off the pole needs extending and really pushing down towards the ground, and the leg on the pole needs to have a really tight grip on it (our instructor demonstrated this on us before we learnt it and it’s meant to hurt!!) bend it like you’ve never bent it before! Lol
With the arms just bring them a bit lower down and try holding with just your inside hand on the pole first, and having some belly out will really help to get the grip near your hip – thrust it into the pole as it is this position that helps you hold the pose.
I struggled with this at the beginning but once I’d had a few goes and put all of the above together I just did it! I was so excited I had to facebook message my instructor to tell her lol.
Keep trying hun and you’ll be doing it before you know it! Now I’ve just got to master it with no belly out (hate getting my belly out at class lol).

I’ll try all of those in my stretching session tomorrow night! It’s such a slow process after an injury – even though it was only a mild one! – I feel like I’ll never be flexible https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_sad.gif I really noticed it in last weeks lesson too when we learnt a new trick – Side V I think Wiki calls it, could hardly make a V shape at all!!
I’ll let you know how it goes! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif

MemberFebruary 21, 2010 at 2:14 pm in reply to: Resistance Stretching–Check This Out!!!!Hey everyone,
I bought this book when this post first came along but haven’t used it much as I’ve had some injuries and not been very motivated through winter!
Anyways – my problem areas are my adductors and hamstrings – which stretches out of the book would you all recommend for these areas? I don’t like that it doesn’t tell you in the book – you kind of have to guess lol. I had an adductor injury in late Dec so it’s just getting back to stretching it again as I’ve lost a lot of flexibility that I used to have https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_sad.gif
Any ideas?

MemberFebruary 17, 2010 at 9:55 pm in reply to: What’s the Secret to the Cross Ankle Release?I’m glad I’ve come across this thread as it’s something we haven’t focussed on much in lesson. We "learnt" it in Level 5 but no-one could do it on their own (we only had a lesson or 2 on it!) so we kind of ignored it!!
Now we’re nearly Level 7 and doing Gemini’s and Scorpios but still no CAR or CKR’s!! So now I’ve read everyone’s tips I’m going to practise at home this week! Thanks ladies!! I think I’m just a wimp when it comes to this move as I don’t really like the feeling of sitting!! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_sad.gif

Thanks for those ideas too hun! I have heard about the one on your back against the wall before but never tried it. Hoping for some pole practise tonight so will try and add those to my stretching. I can’t believe how my flexibility has got worse in the past 2 weeks or so https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_sad.gif

Thanks so much for your reply, I actually bought some exercise bands a couple of months ago but haven’t used them yet! I had all the best intentions of using them but never got round to it!
I will deffinately give those stretches a go though! Thank you https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_surprised.gif)

That doesn’t sound very good hun! At our pole studio you have to have a minimum of 1 years experience AND atleast gym instructor qualifaction level 2 before you can even take the "test lesson" to see if you are offered a job. They also have an intense training corse for people planning on becoming an instructor.
I’m not sure what you should do really, like the others have said it might be best so just let her get on with it and hope that no-one gets hurt. Is she still taking lessons herself? And improving every week etc? Some pole studios are ok with them learning as they go along and teach what they know etc.
Hope that someone else a bit more qualified comes forward in the meantime!

Hiya,
Welcome to the site! Don’t worry about not having a pole yet – I’ve been going to 1 lesson a week since June and only just got my pole up at home this week! It means I have loads to practise though! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif And it was well worth the wait!
Hope you have as much fun here as I do!

I keep telling my mum that I’ll have her on my pole by Xmas! She is adamant that she will not be trying it out! But I think once she sees that it’s not seedy like she imagines – and after she’s had a glass of wine or two – she will be swinging around it like a trooper!
I know she doesn’t approve of it but what can she do?! It’s my house and my hobby! The most I can hope for is that she will come to accept it! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif

We have been doing a lot of focus on gaining momentum in our classes just recently and it is hard isn’t it! I long for a good take off and to get round the pole more than once! Lol. Our instructor teaches us to step away from the pole as we go in to a spin, she says the more distance away from the pole you have the more momentum it creates – it certainly does for her!!
I guess that all we can do is practise and follow the tips given above! Maybe the more confidence we get on the pole the easier it will be to create the momentum?
Good luck hun, sounds like you’re already improving!

Hi!
Welcome to the site! I agree with Veena about the X Pole – just take it down if your room mate is entertaining https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif
Hope you enjoy browsing the site, it’s full of great advice and I’m sure you’ll love it! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif

Hi Margie,
Welcome to the site! I’m sure you’ll find loads of help and advice here and loads of different ways to improve your dancing https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif
Have fun!

Try having a look in the Pics and Vids part or just the videos tab at the top. A lot of the girls on here do Veenas Monthly challenge and have some fab videos of routines that you could get some ideas from https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif
We don’t tend to learn much choreography in our lessons either so I’m hoping when I get my pole at home that I will start looking for some inspiration too! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif

Welcome to the site! you’ve come to the right place for advice and help! Everyone here is so friendly https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif
Well done on sitting on your pole – it took me about 5 lessons to finally get that as I found it sooooo painful! So thats a fab start! Have you thought about taking Veenas lessons? A private lesson would also be a good idea, I started taking classes but have had a private lesson and practise with just the instructor and my friend and it really helps to get the more one-to-one advice.
Have fun! And keep us updated on how you’re doing https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif

Thanks hun,
Just goes to show that we are all different – pole really brings that out I think! Some things you get straight away with no pain but others are going to be killers! I am just glad that I can finally sit on the pole – even if it’s not for long! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif

I agree with the ladies above! I have got a stress ball that I used to strengthen my fingers, just a few squeeze here or there seems to help a bit! (Not just when I’m stressed haha!)
In lesson we also warm up and cool down our fingers so it just shows that it is important https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif

Thanks hun,
I went shopping today and bought these:
http://www.sportsdirect.com/usa-pro-body-bands-ladies-760045
I think they look pretty much the same as yours – I got 3 different ones in 3 colours. Not really sure which one to use first so might just give them a go and see which I prefer! I’m going to have to find some other exercises and positions etc to do with them https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif I’m excited! Lol. Do you know any good webistes for this kind of thing? Don’t really know where to start!
(Won’t be trying them tonight though as already started on the wine and cooking a curry soon!)

Lol oh god don’t say that!! Don’t tell me the pain gets worse than this! Haha!!

That is really good advice on the pole sit conditioning! I am finding it a bit easier now but really couldn’t do it at first – the pain was sooooo bad I really thought I would NEVER do it!
It’s only been 3 weeks since I did it the first time and this weeks lesson I felt a bit easier than normal. So it does get better – I don’t think I’ll ever like it! Haha.
Can’t wait to get my pole so I can do these conditioning exercises https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif

In our lessons we do practise all our spins both ways and I do find that sometimes my spins are better on my wrong side but I’ve always been a bit ambidextrous! So I don’t really mind the spins on both sides but inverting on my left side – it aint happening! I just end up bruising my left side near my hip and can only get one leg hooked before I don’t know what to do with my other leg!
Our instructor says that we do need to practise this as one day we might need to invert on our wrong sides but we don’t practise it much. I’m guessing I will practise it more when I have a pole at home!
I do feel a lot more balanced from practising my spins on both sides though https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif I’m a leftie when I write but a righty in most other things – I am a strange one! Lol.
