Natasha Wang's performance was spectacular (tho the cradle was plain foolish to teach!) and it showed the strength required to pole perfectly. My mum (who knows i pole dance for fitness and perform on occasion for charity nights and competitions and tries really hard not to disapprove) thought it was amazing due to the athletic and balletic technique. She's not a fan of some dancers who she feels 'oversexualise' their performance. But this is the point; there are different aspects to pole dance that some people like more than others, just like in other forms of dance, music and entertainment there are aspects that people like and dislike. I loved Natasha Wang's 2 minute routine, but I love Felix and Alethea and so many others for different reasons. I respect everyone and anyone who has the guts to perform, whatever and wherever their performances may be. Would i love to be strong and elegant??? hell yeah! Would I love to be strong and sexy? hell yeah! Would I love to have the confidence to bare my body in front of a room of strangers? hell yeah!

There are some in the pole community who would like to deny and cut links to stripping and exotic dance but they should be realistic. It's a history and a link that cannot and should not be erased just because it's seen as 'unsavoury.' Going forward, we perform in the style best suited to our tastes and personalities and we try to educate the world around us that pole dance is a legitimate form of dance and fitness, whoever the audience and whatever the outfit.

What annoys me most is this; people who complain about strippers, lap-dancers, exotic dancers rarely criticise the male consumers, without whom these styles would not be economically viable.

society still has such a long way to go in MANY ways.

firstly, congrats on the moves! Success breeds success, and you're working on some difficult moves!

blackout question for you…..  i have doubles photos i like an hopefully taking more soon but worry that they would be too intricate to blackout? the studio background really detracts from them!

my head hurts from all the science!!! im a ghostly-white, blue-eyed blonde and after many, many attempts at finding the perfect tanning product i've come to a decision – my skin can stay the way it is!!!! One problem… I'm doing doubles work with an addicted self-tanner so i WILL have to relent 🙁

lopsi, i think you are right: time and forgiveness. things do eat away at you unless you can 'get over' them. Like JB i'm having issues, though it is entirely between me and my sis-in-law, with no one else involved. i'm trying not to hold onto my anger, humiliation blah blah because i know in the long run it will cause more problems than it's worth. That said, i want absolutely nothing to do with her and she has made it clear that she feels the same, which i can live with, even though it does upset me in some ways. perhaps in the future i'll be mature enough to get over it completely and make the first move towards a reconciliation but i know i'm not ready for that yet and i worry that any attempt will not be well received. Maybe one day.

Empy, i missed the superman – scorpio transition the other night, though i somehow managed to flip onto my feet! wished i'd caught it on camera as the girls i was with thought i had done it on purpose! lol!

there are so many lessons to be learned from falls, mainly DON'T FALL, but i do think that they are part of the learning curve for many of us though freak accidents like Deddie Plowman do happen. we just have to accept the dangers of our sport; many sports are dangerous, but if we take care (crashmats, spotters, no alcohol etc) and have patience we can reduce the severe injuries. I add the patience bit as I know i try to run before i can walk A LOT and if i took things slower i wouldn't have so many near misses (i've got good at catching myself!)

get the BF to do it  all!!! It's a case of him helping you put the pole in the spare room, out of his way, or your spins and tricks blocking his view of the TV!

I had to remove the ceiling light to install my pole as it just happened to be in the best place for the pole (centre of room and in the right place for the joists). @Mechie – if you have any DIY handy or electrician friends they should be able to take the fan down and make the power cabling safe (don't know technical term, but you don't want to leave live wires randomly in your house!) for you to then put your pole up. Actually, I'm pretty sure if you asked in a DIY store they'd be able to tell you how to do it! Then if you are moving you just have to put the fan back up when pole comes down. happy poling!

Some things i like about the studio i go to….

    – if you are progressing faster than the other people in your group, have the option of moving up a level or switching classes

    – other fitness classes / dance classes (burlesque, pump, attack, flex&tone, routine class)

    – Combo deals if you are taking the fitness classes as the cost does mount up.

    – flexibility – once you commit they ask for upfront payment. If you miss a lesson you don't lose your money – you can have it as credit for your next course or you can drop in to the fitness or open sessions instead (this also helps encourage people to try them out! Clever marketing, lol!)

    – opening hours – evening lessons. owners both worked full time in the beginning- one had hours cut so now does morning lessons too. a lot of mummies liked the late sessions – easier to get a sitter if kids in bed!

I love the studio – there is always such a buzz about it as there is so much going on – it's become as much a social club for people as a dance studio! They also do performances at charity events, host charity events and have hosted national comps (though this always seems to be more hassle than it's worth!). for me it's a 1 hour round trip to go to the studio and i'm not the furthest away. there is a studio thats a lot closer but classes are shorter for same price and as i enjoy the atmosphere and the classes at my current studio i wasn't even tempted to try it!

Good luck with your enterprise! hope it all goes well!

i found twisty harder to learn, and harder to invert with to start, but i personally find it is much more stable for varying leg shapes once i'm up. I do feel it more after twisty practice compared to ordinary grip so i tend to limit myself and make sure i warm up very well.

my BF follows the paleo diet (though not for weightloss anymore, just as his lifestyle choice) and he raves about it. He's big into weights and exercise so the higher levels of protein suit him. we both try to eat clean and i now find that if i do eat processed foods my body reacts badly!!

to get back to OP, meal planning and batch cooking are the 2 things that get me through busy / stressful periods. i'm sometimes only home for an hour before having to go out again, then by time i'm back i just want to curl up in bed. I started cooking larger pots of food then separating it out into tupperware, either freezing or refrigerating for the next night, or even for lunch. It's not an ideal situation, but it's not an ideal world. If i'm in a rush, 10-15 mins in the microwave, add some additional fresh veg and carbs and i have a decent, quick, filling meal. But if i have time i'll happily cook from fresh. I also found that i had less waste as i was cooking so much in one go. Oh, and portion control (thank you tupperware!) means i'm not being a greedy pig when i crawl home stressed!!!

i'm now waiting for someone to tell me how bad it is, but it works for me!

March 27, 2011 at 2:35 pm in reply to: How did you start poling?

I started when i was doing postgrad at uni – new country (sort of, I'm from NI and i moved to England) and didn't know anyone. Saw it as a chance to meet people and irritate my mother (love her to bits but it's so much fun winding her up https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif ). lost loads of weight doing intense core work, but didn't learn many tricks before had to have a wee op (nothing serious but they did have to cut thru my tummy https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_sad.gif) couldn't pole, then uni got so hectic i didnt have time. After that, i finished my course, moved home and wished i still had somewhere to dance!

about a year later one of my friends heard about a pole studio opening (only 2nd in the country i believe) and she asked me to start with her. Cant remember what happened, but she ended up not being able to go. I did, and except for a car accident (idiot R driver in a jeep drove into me in traffic- 3months off) and when work is busy, i've been obsessed!

it's fantastic and i try to talk EVERYONE i know into having a go – unfortunately with limited success…

In winter i find morning workouts energising, but if my work schedule is hectic they kill me! It is amazing how much wrecking yourself with exercise can wake you up!

@salubivires – badly!!! unfortunately exercise is the first thing to go when i get busy 🙁 which then gets me very grumpy (I would sacrifice sleep, but i don't get much of that anyway lol!)
