MemberJune 17, 2014 at 11:24 pm in reply to: What moves do you struggle with that you should be able to do easily?I’ve done forearm grip ayesha and split grip, true grip and twisted grip ayesha for >5 years… I cannot consistently get elbow grip. It drives me insane. I also cannot consistently get the transition from butterfly to split grip ayesha without losing balance. Also the move that we have called the felix arch (not sure of the real name) been working on it for 8 fucking years. My arms are too short. Chemmie will confirm that.

Is it wrong that I want to see him do body waves and booty pops in that position?

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK1279/?report=reader A very thorough description of EDS and diagnosis. Pg 18-19 really talks about management.

Typically when someone is hyperflexible, they will be more prone to injuries. One way to prevent injuries in a hyperextensible joint is to build up muscle strength around the joint to stabilize where collagen isn’t doing its job. This requires almost constant conscious thought about engaging the muscles around the joint until it becomes habit. If she’s willing to do that…why not. If she really does have Ehlers-Danlos, I would say get checked out for other manifestations of Ehlers-Danlos (They’re more prone to hemorrhagic strokes). If everything checks out, go for it!

Leyrose: the answer I give people- If you’ve been doing that for years(I don’t know how long you’ve been poling) and not had any problems, you’re probably fine. I have seen quite a few pros grip it without trigger finger. If you’re doing the move with an appropriate amount of strength in your upper arm, there shouldn’t be enough pressure on your bottom hand for it to cause a problem. However, I would learn that grip because I find I use it in any grip when I’m bracing myself with the bottom arm (ayesha, butterfly… i can’t think right now.)

Mirrors can be helpful, but I really prefer video. Mainly because you can replay it and really focus on what’s happening with the whole motion and positioning of your body. As you’re in a complex inverted move, turning your head/body to look at a mirror can change the shape and balance(even saftey) of a move. That being said, I do love a good mirror for the quick positioning fix.

We call it the ‘trigger finger’. 🙂 I love all the names for it!

I don’t think Chem was trying to be mean. She’s just saying a lot of people have gotten injured doing twisted grip. The safest way to do twisted grip for all of your joints is to be strong enough to dead lift, strongly engaging the shoulder and back muscles to protect vulnerable structures such as ligaments, tendeons, etc., and to do it sparingly. Additionally, variations in individual joint structure can make the move more difficult or even impossible to do safely for certain individuals.
That being said, this hip pain seems unrelated to the common injuries associated with TG. To understand the pain in your hip- can you describe it more? What type of pain–stabbing, shooting, cramping, etc. Does it spread anywhere? Does it happen with any other moves? How long does it last?

It is really scary! David Owen does a great job teaching it.

I did not like it. I sold my copy almost immediately after I did it the first time.

I do 3-5 sets of 15 and at the end of each set just see how long I can hold it closed… There is no science behind that. It just seems like a good work out. I also do finger extensor trainers in between.

From my experience and from what I understand… Brass is usually best in super hot humid because of the porosity of the metal.

Finger stiffness upon awakening is a classic symptom of rheumatoid arthritis. Pain waking you from sleep is definitely something to see a doctor about. Is there swelling? I would suggest seeing your primary care doc or rheumatologist if this persists.

Psh Chemmie— I’m sad you didn’t claim me as your partner!

It is not impossible to learn from youtube, especially if you are a visual learner. But to be honest, Veena’s lessons are cheaper for 1 whole year than a 6 class pass at the studio where I work. Hell, 1 month is about the same as 1 class at my studio. In my opinion, definitely worth it to get it started.
Learning from youtube is not impossible (it’s what I do mostly), but it’s slow, frustrating, difficult, and you’re more likely to get injured. No one is breaking down the moves for you and telling you safe ways to do them! It’s really best to get a good foundation from a teacher well versed in safety and fitness training.
There is a promocode “get3free” where you can get three days free to try the lessons out. I would give it a shot, at least to learn foundations.

That’s what I had for a long time…Then I sold it because I wanted a 45 instead of a 50 only to be disappointed!

Corby- I used to topload my PS multipiece because I hated the adjuster cover. They discontinued the toploading option so now you cannot flip it upside down for the multipiece but you can still do it it for the single piece. I think PS has the best spin mode. That’s why I prefer it, but their service is so atrocious I switched to LM.
XP is great, I just hate having to unscrew every time I want to switch to spin! -

Nobody finds this transition smooth and easy at first. It still feels a little wonky to me. Just fake it until it’s comfy. You do have to fold your torso up tighter to get the pole in your side pocket. To do this, you *have* to move faster, and I would put your support arm (down arm) a little higher so you have less distance to move your upper body. If you need, I can try to make a vid when I feel better.

I wasn’t either. I was agreeing with you! 😛

Pt- That’s a more accurate description. Armpit crease.

I just spent HOURS looking for the first pole video I’ve ever recorded- June 2007. It is TERRIBLE quality/filming and my song tastes have significantly changed, but I’m super excited to do this. I have participated in challenges but never posted one… Now I’m really tempted.

Caved and bought it. Thanks for the reviews!
